Hi MrSealyP! I live in Michigan, and in my childhood we would visit my grandparents at the lakefront about 50 miles from Frankenmuth. It's good to see this map! The look and feel of the map is very accurate for the rural area of Saginaw County. Let me tell you a little about the area in case anyone wants to role play what farming is like in Frankenmuth.
Michigan is defined by its location at the center of a lake system known as the Great Lakes. These five lakes are really freshwater inland seas; they are some of the largest bodies of freshwater in the world, visible from space, and Michigan touches four of them. Together, they form a system that eventually drains into the Atlantic Ocean, and our farmers use the St. Lawrence Seaway to ship agricultural products to markets around the world. Michigan has the longest coastline of any U.S. state, and the state is divided into two large peninsulas, each surrounded on three sides by water and joined by a 5 mile long suspension bridge. The Lower Peninsula, where Frankenmuth is located, is shaped like a mitten. This region of the Lower Peninsula is known as "The Thumb" of Michigan because Saginaw Bay separates this region from the rest of the mitten. Detroit, Michigan's largest city (where I live) is about 100 miles south of Frankenmuth, where Lake Huron and Lake Erie are joined by the Detroit River, separating the U.S. and Canada. Interstate 75, one of the largest highways in the United States, runs north through Detroit, Frankenmuth, all the way up across the bridge to Sault Ste Marie, Michigan in the U.P., and south through Cincinnati (Ohio), Chattanooga (Tennessee), Atlanta (Georgia), to Miami, Florida. For the entire 1,786 miles of this freeway, you will see billboards advertising Frankenmuth, Michigan as a tourist stop. Tourist destinations in Frankenmuth: Bronner's Christmas Wonderland (promoted as the world's largest year-round store for Christmas decorations) and two large family-style restaurants (Zehnders and Bavarian Inn), a "Cheese Haus," a fudge shop and so forth. Zehnders and Bavarian Inn are across the street from each other, each with an indoor waterpark, a hotel and famous chicken dinners. It is an exaggeration to call any of the buildings "Bavarian architecture." They're American buildings and shopping centers with signage and facia that have a vaguely "Alpine-style" appearance. On Google Street View, you can go down Main Street to see the town.
Geographically, Michigan and the Great Lakes were formed by the retreat of enormous, mile-high glaciers, leaving the Thumb area incredibly flat with the bedrock far below the surface. In Frankenmuth, there's about 18" of silty loam on top of 17" of very fine sand, with stratified layers of sand and clay below that. There are some lowlands around Cass River running through Frankenmuth, but this is more of a creek than a river and barely breaks up the flat landscape at all. Like on this map, rural roads in the area are straight, flat and narrow, and the fields are large and boxy. When I was learning to drive, I was terrified to drive on these roads because the speed limit is high and the drainage ditches on either side of them are deep, just like the ones you noticed on the map. Even the woodlots, which locals keep for hunting whitetail deer and farm subsidies, are usually square, accounting for about 5% of the farmland. Outside of town or around peoples' houses, these woodlots are the only places you'll see many trees. Somewhat ironically, most of Michigan was once part of the Great North Woods that covered a large part of the United States with massive trees, but lumberjacks clear-cut the entire state a long time ago. North of Saginaw Bay, Michigan is again mostly forested with birch and white pine, as the growing season is too short for farmland when you go more than about 50 miles past Frankenmuth. In Saginaw County, 78% of the land is farmland and the growing season is from the second week of May until the last week of September.
The land was originally inhabited by the Sauk people, who were pushed on to reservations in Iowa and Kansas, where they now share a tribal government with the few descendants of what remains of the Fox/Meskwaki people. The Fox also lived in southeast Michigan before the king of France issued an edict ordering their extermination when Detroit was a French colonial trading post. Chippewa/Ojibwe people, including the Saginaw tribe, were force-migrated to reservations in southeast and central Michigan when they lost their land in the Upper Peninsula. By 1837, when Michigan became a State, indigenous Americans had lost all of their land in Michigan. Today, almost every farm owner (98.6%) is white.
Because of the short growing season, comparatively poor soil and bad drainage, farming in Michigan is a little riskier than some other areas of the United States. Saginaw County has 1,250 farms, averaging 262 acres, producing more than $170 million worth of agricultural products annually (88% crops, 12% livestock). Farmers here often face bankruptcy; this is not a wealthy area at all. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the average Saginaw Country farm only nets about $11,000 in farm-related income annually, and another $8,000 in government subsidies, although this varies a lot by size of farm. There are still a lot of family farms (96%) that haven't been snapped up by big corporations, but there are 6 farms larger than 1,000 acres. 79% have internet access, 24% hires farm labor, 1% farms organically. Soybeans (47% by acreage) and corn (36%) are most commonly grown in the area, with wheat (8%) and sugar beets (5%) in third and fourth place. Saginaw County is 4th out of 82 Michigan counties producing grass and hay. There are about 8,000 cows and almost 10,000 hogs (dairy and other cattle products make up about 75% of the livestock revenue in the county). Land use practices can be broken down as follows: 20% no till, 21% reduced till, 44% intensive till, 11% cover crop. USDA characterizes Frankenmuth's soil as "nearly level and gently undulating [undulating!!!], poorly drained and somewhat poorly drained, silty soils on lake plains."
The giant grain elevators that you see on this map are typical of the area, and they can be seen for miles on the flat landscape. Michigan Sugar Company, the third-largest sugar beet processing company in the U.S., is the largest employer in Huron County, Michigan, and about 20 miles from Frankenmuth. This company is a grower-owned cooperative of about 900 farms across Michigan and Ontario, Canada, producing about 1.3 billion pounds annually of refined sugar, sold under the Pioneer and Big Chief brands in supermarkets, and also to industrial and commercial customers. I’m from Frankenmuth, zero resemblance. Just a base map with a name on it. The town grew from settlers using the Cass River as a thorofare. Cousins started a hotel and restaurant (known as Zehnders and Bavarian Inn now), which are now friendly rivals as they call themselves. I used to work for Judy Keller Zehnder at the Lodge.

They also have a big Festival every Summer with a big car show. I live roughly 29 miles from the town in the small town of Chesaning, MI. which is also in Saginaw County.

Drainage ditches like that are pretty common in big agricultural areas, at least in the mid-west. The fields are huge and have drain tile that runs to those ditches. Culverts are the only reasonable way to get across them. In the city you have storm drains, out in the country we have ditches.

First thing you should do is the collectibles before somebody removes them from the map because they're worth over 3 million. After you do 10 or so they will show up on your map as little yellow dots. You will have trouble finding at least three so get into your hot spots and start removing them and one will show up on that top left part of the map and the bottom right part of the map and the one that is near the pond Midway on the left hand side is invisible she'll keep looking down and slowly walking around and all of a sudden the collectible will show up even though you can't see it

I like this maps layout, but the ditches got to go. They could at least be more shallow so the AI drivers can get out when they drive into them.
They're even removed from the buyable farmland so you can't even adjust them with sculpting in most places.
Also, the log cabin is super cool. I just wish it were on buyable land too so it could be your sleep trigger.

Only problem is the crop calendar. I hate that there are no overlapping crops and you basically can’t do one in the spring and one in the fall like a lot of maps. Not sure if it’s a geographical location issue or what but it’s kinda frustrating. I want to be able to plant in the spring, harvest in the fall, then replant in the fall to harvest again in spring then the cycle repeats. If someone knows how to get in touch with the modder maybe you could pass along that message. Aside from that love the map, especially the included barns!

It's a beautiful map with a serious problem, at least for me. The fields are barely separated at all and the Hired Hand AI does NOT handle this well. You will have to supervise the hired hands VERY closely or they'll wander off, fertilize fields that don't belong to you, PLOW your already planted fields and generally be a pain. I'm not saying don't try it, as it can be very rewarding but heed my warning. I even used terraforming to paint barriers between fields. This worked OK for planting and plowing, but not at all for fertilizing. Still, be aware and watchful.

This is an off the topic response to the way you where feeling and comments that were made to you, Calmsden Farm Eps 17.
First of all I do hope yourself and the rest of the family are well.
If you never show the passion and fortitude in the videos that you produce in Farming Simulator where would Giants be now because we need observers like you and many others that pump out these wonderful videos.
Farming Simulator 2008 was when it all started since then Giants have made approximately 25 million copies.
Without you MrSealyp and many like you, I doubt Giants would have lasted this long so keep up the fantastic passion and critic with the work you put into your videos.
It was your 2017 videos that made me look into the game FS17 and WHAM! I ain't stopped yet...
Keep Tractoring, I know it ain't a word but it works for me.
Back to Calmsden I've got some chickens to sort out!
