Omar Khayyam was amazing. See quote about him in E.L. Konigsburg's Caroline/Father's Arcane Daughter about the Rubiyiat - it is about "how to be happy." Makes sense. Omar Khayyam, born 1048, has been described as "cynical and skeptic, while also emphasizing the importance of living life to the fullest." I think he is our type of person for our type of season 🙂
His رباعيات Ruba'iat (collection) of poems that he wrote spoke about faith and atheism, they spoke about preaching amusement (following desires) and they preached for asking God's forgiveness and repentance. Therefore, scholars disagreed in the classification of Omar Khayyam and most likely he did not apostate, what his poetry was only a cry in the face of injustice and Rogue matters on the Islamic religion in his era.
The only version of the Rubay I recollect is the version presented to us by Paramahansa Yogananda under the title:The wine of the mystics, published by the Self Realisation Fellowship. 🌹
Omar Khayyam was a great poet, mathematician, astronom and philosopher ! But I think, he wasn't partisan of atheism, I think He was agnostic or soufi !
"And do you think that unto such as you, a maggot-minded, starved, fanatic crew, God gave the Secret, and denied it me? Well, well, what matters it! believe that too." Omar Khayyam
2:10 "May God bring us a thousand Omar Khayyams" They should be careful what they wish for; if there's anything that could take down the violent, autocratic, fundamentalist regime that is the Iranian government, it would be an army of Khayyams!
@Malik one may be a piously religious person and still be anti-fundamentalist. Khayyam’s poetry expresses a deep humanism, a love of life and freedom and the pleasures of the senses. And he was also a Muslim.
@Malik It's actually been suggested that his pilgrimage to Mecca was done in order to allay accusations of skepticism that his opponents leveld against him based on the content of his poetry and other writings. I'm not saying that he wasn't a pious or learned Muslim, but it seems quite likely that his personal interpretation of Islam was far more humanistic and tolerant of other faiths than what you may be suggesting. You say that much of his poetry can't actually be traced back to him, and that's true; but it is for that poetry attributed to him that people love him most. That's why this documentary got made, his poetry. If you're going to throw out the poetry altogether and just talk about Khayyam based on what we do know for sure about him, it's a completely different discussion.
That's inaccurate, he was accused of atheism and Heresy because he taught mathematics and philosophy but many of his acquaintances said that he died a Muslim.
He was no Muslim let’s make that clear, he opposed the Mullahs of his day with their religious fanaticism and instead encouraged free thought and scientific enquiry. And he loved alcohol.
He was a Sufi...an ideology which was in fact the most influential one to spread Islam in South, Southeast Asia and Africa. Read some books first before commenting!
I just told that he most likely died a Muslim because No reason or evidence to contradict otherwise, plus I also said that his poems included indulgence in amusement and repentance and prayer for forgiveness from God, they were cries in the face of Injustice posed by rouge matters on Islamic religion in his time.
@Thelosttraveller1 Thank you for your comment. before the Afghans i.e. pashtuns changed their country's name to Afghanistan it was called Khurasan and been for thousand of years, never Persia. The British historians had a theory that the afghans i.e. pashtuns were the same ethnic group as the Persians and therefore referred to our lands in a historical sense as east Persia or even east Iranians but both terms are incorrect as we are a different ethnic group as well as never been ruled by them.

He is born in Persia, but he is from Arabic descendant. His name is Arabic and so is some of his writings. In those days of the Islamic golden age, there was no real demarcation between Arabic, Persian (and Persia was much larger than Iran and included many places that are now considered as different countries from Iran), or Amazigh (a different race with different language). It was an Islamic empire and the formal language was Arabic because it is the language of Quran and of the prophet.
