Mr. Sommers is a man of few words, but I’d be willing to bet, he’s forgotten more then most will learn!! He’s a real asset to a young/new person that’s really interested in learning!!
Yes, he is! He does not talk a whole lot, especially on camera. It has taken me many years to get him to really talk to me. As you say, he is just a man a few words. But you are also correct and knowing that he has forgotten more than most will ever know. Thank you for the kind words and thank you for taking time to comment. Take care of yourself and do come again, please
Good to see MR. Sommers! Y’all train like my grandad and great uncle. They was to old when I came along. They always said you got to be smarter than the mule. This is the way y’all operate smarter and with patients.
Yessir, I’ve heard that saying a time or two myself. Thank you for the kind words and also taking time to watch and comment. Take care and do come again, please
Thank you for the harness video. I don't have a mule, but I really enjoy watching you training an working them. As for Mr Summer, you just got to Love a man of few words, he's great. Please thank him also, an Jerry from Ohio said hello. Thank you Jerry
Thank you, Mr. Jerry! That truly means a lot to me. I’m glad you are here and enjoy the videos even though you don’t own a mule. I’m just glad you like hanging out with us. That means a lot. Thank you sir for taking time to watch and comment. I appreciate your dedication to my channel. Take care and do come again, please!
Now that went really well, your patient step by step method of training surely pays off. I also liked to see the string of four mules moving together. That would one day make a nice four-up.
Thank you sir. Patience is a virtue no doubt. I plan to work them four up a lot especially in the woods. As soon as I get them settled in working, they’ll be worked four up. They’ll learn an awful lot just following Kate and Alice around for a while. Plus I’m working them all instead of letting a pair stand up. Good for everybody 😌 thank you for the kind words and taking time to watch and comment. Take care and do come again, please
Zach , I love the way June is responding to the extra training you have been giving her . I am 68 years old and breaking a 2 year old walking horse to trailride in mountains . You are exactly right on they tell you how firm you must be . June could hurt you bad if you didn't have controll of her. Most people would have given up on her. May is guffing around June looks professional. June is a beautiful Mule. Jerry . I met you July 4th at picnik I love your videos !

A client of mine told me never to getca donkey or mule, because you can never trust them. They will turn on you, bite, kick will resist any training. Animals reflect the owner/trainer. They are a mirror of you. You having mules is why I started watching your channel. They are highly intelligent and have a strong mind. June is my favorite 💙🩵
Hello! Ya know, I’ve heard those type things all my life on mules and donkeys and tbh…it couldn’t be further from the truth. They’re so often misunderstood! They’re def mirrors no doubt. And magnifiers! When they’re handled properly, imho of course, they’re superior work animals by far. And def cheaper to keep! Thank you for the kind words and taking time to watch and comment. I appreciate your dedication to my channel. Take care and do come again, please!

That is pretty cool Mr. Ronnie! I’ve known a few horses and mules alike that knew their way back home. Sometimes they even went home without me ha ha. Anyway, thank you for taking time to watch and comment my friend. I appreciate your dedication to my channel. Take care and do come again, please
This is a great video, very educational having patience with them. They’re a good looking pair of mules.and I sure do like Mr. Summers input you seem like he knows what he’s talking about. I think they did a great job for the first time being harnessed. Can’t wait to see your next video!God bless you 👍🙏🙏
Thank you Mr Rex. And yes, Mr Summers is a great guy and mule skinner no doubt. Thank you for the kind words and also taking time to watch and comment. Take care my friend and do come again, please
Loved this Zach,,,I watched the entire video,,,start to finish... I'm going to come down there to take 'patience learning' from you! You have the patience of Job! Don't know why it is,,most any animal,,is soothing to watch. Most animals are more resourecful,,,than humans when you get right down to it. Mr Summers is one cool gentleman also. Thanks, Barry
Hello Barry! Yes, animals are def more resilient than most people. Smarter at times also lol. Time and mistakes have taught me to be patient. And I’m still learning to be honest. Sometimes I am not as soft and patient as I wanna be. But I’m still working on it. Thank you for the kind words and also taking time to watch and comment. I appreciate it! Take care and do come again, please
Thank you ma’am! I truly appreciate the kind words and also thank you for taking time to watch and comment on my video. I appreciate your dedication to my channel. Take care and do come again, please
You’re most welcome! I’m glad ya enjoyed it and found it helpful. More to come. Thanks for taking time to watch and comment. Take care and do come again, please
Yes ma’am, you are welcome! One of the first things I have found that you have to do when working with a pair of animals be at horses or mules alike… You have to figure out what kind of animals you are working with mentally. You have to ask yourself, are they mean? Are they smart? Are they dumb? Are they gentle? And so on… The state of mind has a lot to do with how they will break out.
Thanks Zach. Serb here in N Calif. You kidin? It all makes sense. I love this stuff. I don't think I'll be getting a mule at this stage of my life but it's all good and I appreciate you taking time on these training videos. As I am apt to say, You are courageous Zach
Hey Serb! Thanks my friend and I’m glad you are here even though you probably won’t ever own a mule or whatnot. I am just glad ya like hanging out. That means a lot! And an atmosphere I’ve tried to create here since I started this thing. I want a clean laid back atmosphere here. Where people can hangout. And learn if they’re a mind too. Anyway, thanks my friend and thanks for taking time to watch and comment. Take care and do come again, please
Good morning Mr. Herschel! Thank you for such kind words, my friend. And thank you for taking time to watch and comment. I truly appreciate it. Take care of yourself and do come again, please
Thank you kindly! And it kind of surprised me as well. They both did pretty well. Thank you for taking time to watch and comment. I surely appreciate it. Take care and do come again, please
Well, to be honest..not enough steady work is just as bad as too much work. They’re living breathing creatures as we are. They need to stay in shape in order to work efficiently without causing probs. That said, 3-4 days a week is a good work week for them. Most times we will work 5-6 hrs a day when they work. So they’re not over worked by any means. Having two teams will help no doubt and rotating them will be beneficial. Times I need all four on a log to move a big load without straining any particular animal. So getting the new team broke will help. Thanks for the kind words and taking time to watch and comment. Take care and do come again, please
Good video you are Lucky To Have A Friend like Mr, Summers around all my old friends have time on young folks aren't interested in Mules or horses or plowing or Warning we still have the Watson and Plows we lost a bit mullet about a month ago for one left For Bless take kear
Thank you ma’am, and I am glad you enjoyed it. Thank you for taking time to watch and comment as you always do. I surely appreciate it. Take care of yourself and do come again, please
Show is what I always really really liked I didn't let mine trot with the wagon till they 4 or 5 ,They thought that Ole slow walk was as fast as wagon would roll I see your still sick hope you get to feeling better before to long
Yessir Mr Thomas I am of the same thoughts as you. I don’t want them to know that they can even trot or run. Slow and easy is our game. Yessir, still been a little stopped up and whatnot. But getting better thankfully! Back working in the woods this week thankfully. Thanks for the talk and watching! I appreciate you. Take care my friend and do come again, please
Zach, if you ever have one of those lead chains break on you, you'll never tie with one again. I still have a scar on my hand from where I had one of them break when my horse was setting back on it and I had my hand on it, just like you just did. It is like getting hit in the hand with a sledge hammer. A chain is only as strong as its weakest link, and that weakest link is often the snap. That's where mine broke, and I got piled in the hand with half a snap. Tie with a cotton shank. Lead with a chain. I don't even like tying with a nylon shank: too much stretch and spring in it. I made a suggestion to Jim Gordon tonight that a roundtable discussion with you and maybe Ben Burgess and a few others on zoom would be a great teaching tool for beginners. Discuss the regional differences in harness, bridles, eveners, log carts, log wagons, shoeing, etc, and the whys behind it. Like I said to him, almost everything is different between your operation and his, and much of that is just the difference in location. You have different weather, different soil, different terrain, different trees, and a different market. Then there is the obvious differences between mules and horses. He was saying something about the southern spreaders being like his neck yoke. Since I found you from his recommendation, I'm guessing he saw that in your intro with Mr. Sommers mules. A discussion of that spreader and a doubletree, and the reasons for using one or the other might be really useful for a young person thinking about horse logging or mule logging. Mr. Sommers could be a real asset in a discussion like that too. The team I used to work were mother and daughter, and as alike as two peas in a pod. The only difference was mama was terrified of bicycles, due to a mean kid running a bike into her back end. The daughter was afraid of dump trucks, due to an overloaded dump truck sliding a bunch of gravel off in her face. They had a good reason for their fears. But mama would always get daughter past the dump trucks, and daughter would always get mama past the bikes. I used to groom a thoroughbred mare who could cowkick that far forward, and she could bite that far backwards. My only ace was that she was racing fit and really skinny, so if I pressed my belly up against hers when I was grooming her, her feet would stir the air behind me, and her teeth would just miss the middle of my back. Watch out of hot wire fence around your hitch rail as well. Buddy of mine had a bad wreck with a colt and a cart when he tied him to the hitch rail at someone else's house and didn't know there was a live hot wire running under it. The colt touched that fence, ran through the hitch rail, and took off up through the woods with the cart. We picked up the harness in six inch pieces. I don't think there was one piece that was over six inches long. Sorry, I'm old and I've gotten hurt enough times that I'm really aware of hazards. I agree with Mr. Sommers, that slow easy approach wins the day. I'm going to have to watch the rest of this later.
Hello there! Thank you for taking time to watch and invest in commenting. Always good to hear you. So, on the lead chains…mine are 1/4” grade 70 with bull snaps. I’ve never had an animal break em. With that said, when I am worried about an animal setting back hard enough to break my chains or lead ropes, I put a neck rope on them along with a lead chain or rope. To keep them from breaking my halters. I mainly use chain, because mules will eat right thru a rope lol. They love em! 🤣 As far as the hot wire, fence was off so ain’t no prob. And they can’t get over that hitch rail anyway. It’s in the ground 4’ with a butt load of concrete around the posts lol. Animals personalities are so awesome. Every one of them is just a tad different and when ya realize they’re different, it surely helps in training them and catering to their abilities. Safety is always a concern tho, with everything! I agree with ya on that no doubt. Jim and I have done a zoom meeting along with a few others on the DAPNET zooms. But they’re focused more so on the New England area. So things don’t get out like it does here on TH-cam. Might be something to consider doing one day and be helpful for others. Anyway, thank you for the kind words and always and thank you for taking time to comment and chat. I appreciate it. Take care my friend and do come again, please
@@zachodommulelogging I'm not criticizing you, my friend. I often mention things like the hot wire because I know there are beginners watching, and I want them to be aware of the hazards.
@@zachodommulelogging I came back to watch the rest of it. Your young stock is also learning to hold back this way, when the only load is their teammate and not a loaded wagon. For some reason, I now have The Baby Elephant Walk going through my head. (Henry Mancini, from an old John Wayne movie)
Mr Zach i love mule as much as you we had one on the farm about 50 years ago my grand dad had but now im got older love to have one to ride they are the best four wheel drive vehicle you can have but thanks i would one day meet you an mr summer best of luck 🫏😀

Yes. I wouldn’t have put her there if I didn’t have confidence in her. She’s a good one. Slow and steady is her game. I knew she was the right pick to break these colts. Thank you for the kind words and taking time to watch and comment. Take care and do come again, please!
Did you have to beg Mr Summers to come help? I know the answer "no." I believe he enjoys working with new mules as much as a broke team. I think I said this the other day too but for some reason I'm drawn to June's look. She is beautiful to me. Stay safe and enjoy the fellowship you have with your friend, Mr. Summers. God bless both your families
Hello Mr James! Ha, nah Mr Summers insisted he stay and watch lol. He said if nothing else, he’d call 911 for me 🤣🤣👏🏻. Anyway, yessir I like June’s look myself. She’s really bloomed into a nice looking young mule for sure. She has come a long long way. And slowly, I am winning this race most definitely. Time and work will get her where she needs to be. Thank you for the kind words my friend and thank you for taking time to watch and comment as always. Take care and do come again, please
Dear Zach Thank you for making this excellent video Thats some magnificent work you are doing and showing there. I am sure they appreciate how gentle you are with them to help them. I hope you can feel fully recovered from your cold very soon, maybe you can have some piping hot soup and other liquids because you have alot alot of muscle to super hydrate so you can feel your full strength. All the work you do is profound and unforgettable for all to see and hear. I will remember to go slow, always dear friend. God bless you all there and the animals too Take care my friend

Without looking directly at their eyes, but always watchimg their ears and face expressions from the corner of the human's eyes... That is a big part of knowing what they are thinking. You can catch a naughty thought before they act on it and get a bad habit...this vigilance has saved me from getting hurt many a time.
Yes ma’am! That is very true. Thank you for the kind words and thank you for taking time to watch and comment. I surely appreciate it. Take care and do come again, please
She's doing good for it being the first time they knows something strange going on. That they're not used to as the saying goes stop it before it starts.
Yes ma’am, you are right! You said that really well. You just don’t know what is going to show up that day. As she becomes more broke to work… She will become more predictable. And therefore more reliable and more valuable. I am looking forward to it! Thank you again for the kind words and taking time to watch and comment!
It’s hard for me to see their body language facing forward. I’d soon not get kicked either way. Paying attention can prevent it most of the time. If you know what to look for. Although crap happens sometimes. Thanks for taking time to watch and comment my friend. Take care and do come again, please

@@zachodommulelogging ur welcome my friend 🙏👌
That my friend, is proof of your good handling,!
Very impressive! 👍😁
Thank you ma’am! I truly appreciate the kind words and also thank you for taking time to watch and comment on my video. I appreciate your dedication to my channel. Take care and do come again, please
Thanks Zach for doing this. It is very helpful.
You’re most welcome! I’m glad ya enjoyed it and found it helpful. More to come. Thanks for taking time to watch and comment. Take care and do come again, please
I like you explaining the difference of Mae and June of being a toddler brain and how there brains work. Thank you
Yes ma’am, you are welcome!
Glad to see the colts doing well!
Good job Zack !
Be safe and GOD Bless!
Thank you Mr Bobby!! I appreciate it my friend. Thanks for taking time to watch and comment. Take care and do come again, please
Always great to see Mr. Summers !!
Yes sir, it is. Anytime I get to spend time with him as a good time! And thank you, sir.
If I ever get to Tennessee, I would love to come by and see your mules.
Welcome to come anytime my friend! Be glad to see you.
Hello from Missouri. You did a great job! You are a good mules skinner. Your brother in Christ Hershel.
Good morning Mr. Herschel! Thank you for such kind words, my friend. And thank you for taking time to watch and comment. I truly appreciate it. Take care of yourself and do come again, please
I really enjoyed watching. It went much better than I thought. Thank you for sharing it with us.
Thank you kindly! And it kind of surprised me as well. They both did pretty well. Thank you for taking time to watch and comment. I surely appreciate it. Take care and do come again, please
I do like the video with your mules on how you are getting them ready to start working so you can give your other pair a break

Show is what I always really really liked
I didn't let mine trot with the wagon till they 4 or 5 ,They thought that Ole slow walk was as fast as wagon would roll
I see your still sick hope you get to feeling better before to long
Yessir Mr Thomas I am of the same thoughts as you. I don’t want them to know that they can even trot or run. Slow and easy is our game. Yessir, still been a little stopped up and whatnot. But getting better thankfully! Back working in the woods this week thankfully. Thanks for the talk and watching! I appreciate you. Take care my friend and do come again, please
another great training video, thanks a bunch
Thank you sir, and thank you for taking time to watch and comment. Take care and do come again, please.
@@thirzapeevey2395no prob. Thank you 😊
@@zachodommulelogging I came back to watch the rest of it. Your young stock is also learning to hold back this way, when the only load is their teammate and not a loaded wagon. For some reason, I now have The Baby Elephant Walk going through my head. (Henry Mancini, from an old John Wayne movie)

Alice is a rock star. If she had reacted when June did, you would have had a real wreck on your hands
Dear Zach
Thank you for making this excellent video
Thats some magnificent work you are doing and showing there.
God bless you all there and the animals too
Take care my friend
Hello Steve! Thank you my friend for such kind words. You’re an encourager for sure. I am feeling a little better thank God! Thanks for taking time to watch and comment my friend. I surely appreciate it. Take care my friend and do come again, please

Yessir you’ve got the right idea and thank you. Thanks for taking time to watch and comment also. Take care and do come again, please
June is like having a strong willed child They have the best and the worst in them. You just don’t know what is going to show up that day
Yes ma’am, you are right! You said that really well. You just don’t know what is going to show up that day. As she becomes more broke to work… She will become more predictable. And therefore more reliable and more valuable. I am looking forward to it! Thank you again for the kind words and taking time to watch and comment!
Your right you have to stay with them to prove they won’t win
Yes ma’am, for sure.

Hi Mr Summers
I will tell him for you :)

They are both 2 years old..will be 3 yo next May. Thanks for taking time to watch and comment. Take care and do come again, please
I always face forward when working under the belly . I'd rather one kick me in the tail than in the face !😢
It’s hard for me to see their body language facing forward. I’d soon not get kicked either way. Paying attention can prevent it most of the time. If you know what to look for. Although crap happens sometimes. Thanks for taking time to watch and comment my friend. Take care and do come again, please
Look at those pretty babies
