Watched this as a 17 year old teenager in 1971 . Remember it well . I believe Whickers World was shown on Monday evenings at nine . T.V was so much better in those days .
Why on earth would anyone wear polyester 🤦 you can see by the way the fabric moves that it's not man made! Do you really envisage Alan Whicker buying a cheap polyester suit to present his programme in? It's called tropical weight wool. It breathes. And the long, fine fibres wick moisture away from the skin, which is why he's not sweating. Shame about all the hair oil, but at least it isn't sweat and human grease like so many men of the time 🤢
It's quite something to see a documentary about the infamous penal colony with people who still remembered when the prison was active. Amazing that Alan even found a former inmate who spoke English.
It's Allan Whicker... he was BORN in a suit... it was his uniform as he stormed around the world, fearlessly confronting some of the globe's psychos, with his plummy tones as his sword, and his nylon shirts as his shield...😂... a legend...🏴👍
I don't believe that Alan Whicker wore nylon! Look at him! Suits of linen,or lightweight wool for the heat. And always cotton shirts. You can see by the way that the fabric moves that it's natural fibres, and you can see by the way he moves he's not wearing polyester or nylon! That's hair grease, not sweat and human grease holding his hair still 🤢 I remember only too vividly men in cheap shirts, with ingrained grime on the collars and sweating like cheese. Yuck!
Whicker really was quite first class. Hugely erudite and urbane…..always correctly turned out too; an Englishman abroad. Such a change from the vulgar Phillip Schofield sorts today….
Ah, Blackpool... a sad decline... I've had better nights on the roof of Barlinnie jail in freezing February...🤣👍🏴... But its not the worst, but then, I've stayed in some Brittannia hotels...🤣🤣👍🏴
Whicker really invented abd defined the travel show genre... Hell, when Michael Palin began his 'Around The World in 80 Days...' adventure, lunch with Whicker was an essential pre-amble before departure... a British legend...🏴👍
I visited Devil's Island in 1977 on a family vacation... not the greatest place on earth to go for a swim...yet me being only 7 at the time did so...I remember mum ringing a bell to show me how dangerous swimming in the water actually was...so my advice would be...listen to your mother ...I remember it like it was yesterday...
What one can wonder what it was like before civilization, there had to be the same impulse to go against the accepted norm. What happen to the unruly? Straight up murder ? Great doc: I thought of the McQueen film
Certainly not. This guy can mix with the rich and the poor. Bald sticks exclusively to the poor, where he can play the big man. He'd be out of his depth with the wealthy.

I was 16 😂. Recall it very well. Fabulous television compared with today.
Better telly back then you only had two channels
Damn right ot was... TV had 'events' then... 3 channels, and when Whicker was on, all stopped to watch... legend... 👍🏴
Man strolled into a jungle prison with oppressive humidity, rocking polyester...savage.

I love how he explores the jungle in a suit and tie.

Privilege
This is why I loved watching Bourdain. He dressed for the occasion.

Or Ross Kemp😂
Now that where the good days of journalism
YOU GOT THAT RIGHT.
This place sounds like the luxury version of Blackpool
I've been to Blackpool and I agree with you.

You're being a bit unfair to devil's island.

A full suit and tie in that tropic heat
And didn’t even break a sweat. I’d be drenched!
The suits believe it or not are cool, and don't forget about the cool breeze off the ocean in the morning..it wasn't this hot 20.years ago..
The suit looks very thin, anyway I didn't realize this was produced over 50 years ago.
WaddanEnglishMan. 🏴
@@robertafierro5592definitely still hot 20 years ago. In 2000

Thanks for sharing the story. According to the account ringing a bell actually attracted sharks. I think your mom meant well though.
I would love to visit. Morbid curiosity I guess
The Froggy Alf Garnett was a barrel of laughs 😂😅😂😅🐸🐸🐸🐸
Brilliant Alan Whicker
Just finished watching Papillon on Netflix. Even if it was embellished what an achievement to survive that
Same here! Amazing
@@wasa213 Must have been brutal
I can't help thinking that institutions of this nature will return in our lifetimes.

Dry gullitine is a brilliant autobiography. Renee belbenoit.
The good old days when convicts were treated firm but fair!
Reminds of the Whicker Island sketch by Monty Python
This is the episode they based it on.
Sheesh! That penal colony makes super-max seem like a country club by comparison.
Papillon
The Frenchman was not playing around with crime.
Bet Alan was a devil on the dance floor ..look how he handles that pontoon with nifty footwork!
the sadistic satanic French government even stop within the Foreign Legion
Whicker covering this like a failing hotel rather than a maximum security jail.
Got to admit, the French government didn't f... around !
Couldn't they fish or swim there ?
He's no Bald and Bankrupt
Good, that guy’s a tosser
Certainly not. This guy can mix with the rich and the poor. Bald sticks exclusively to the poor, where he can play the big man. He'd be out of his depth with the wealthy.
Thank goodness!
Different demographic.

No , it isn’t very pretty , what a town without pity can do.

Notice the arrogance of the presenter, again. No wonder he became an figure of satire .

How have you come to that conclusion? You dont know that he thinks that.
This is the scene that makes you think of Monty Python.
Opening shot that is..
