St. Mary's Orthodox Church, Thiruvithamcode popular as Arappalli or Thomayar Kovil is called Arappalli because this church which Mar Thoma Sleeha himself built in the land gifted to him by Arachan of Thiruvithamcode was incomplete when compared to the seven churches of Mar Thoma Nazranees that were built after the initial step of erecting Stone Sleeva / Sleeba (Persian Style Stone Cross) in seven different localities of Kerala by Mar Thoma Sleeha, the church is called Thomayar Kovil as it was built by Mar Thoma Sleeha himself. Before completing the construction of this church Mar Thoma Sleeha had to undergo martyrdom by the hands of a religious terrorist on 3rd July in A.D. 72. As a result of the martyrdom the church was built incomplete with just half the height of a usual church & that's the reason why it came to be known as Arappalli (Ara + Palli = Arappalli. Ara means half & palli means church) & not because the property for church was gifted by Arachan.
