- In the aftermath of the Arab Spring, countries in the Middle East have seen a surge in the looting of antiquities. In Egypt alone, an estimated $3 billion dollars worth of artifacts have been plundered. Looters have broken into museums and left thousands of empty pits, all to feed the global demand for antiquities -- especially in the United States. Gianna Toboni goes to Egypt to meet some of the people behind the black market trade as well as those trying to preserve what's left of Egypt's archeological heritage.
Then: despite the fact that China is on track to dominate the world economy, the country still looks at the Western white male as the epitome of cultural cachet. Among China's growing upper class-there are now more than 2 million millionaires there-nothing spells cool like importing a European butler or having a white businessman appear at your event. In fact, you can even rent a white guy by the hour or by the day. Thomas Morton heads to China to check out these unusual jobs, whose only requirement is that the applicant be white and male.

I'm absolutely appalled at the number of people who are more concerned about antiquities than the fact that an actor is speaking to a room full of doctors.
I've been a Chinese all my life and now thinking about all the foreign "professionals" I saw on ceremonies and presentations...holy fuck. I know from foods to counterfeits the Chinese people can be very "imaginative" but this shit...

Every time I see the story on the white face epidemic in China, I'm always amazed. In one story the claimed that most of these people attending these conferences and get-togethers know these guys are fake but they don't care?

Someday Egyptians will be grateful that these artifacts are going to USA to wealthy collectors and museums where they will be held safely and preserved and studied. Keeping them where they are in a land of religious fanatics means they could easily be destroyed. Egypt has to get the fanatics under control before they destroy all their antiquities.

You'd have to wonder if Egypt is turning a blind eye to the looting, just to temporarily keep the looters busy to prevent unrest. Their method of tracking the smuggled antiquities allows at least partial recovery and appeasement.

i don't have problems with these locals "stealing" these artifacts, jewelries, etc. at least they're doing it because they need to feed their families and it's not like they're destroying it but rather sells it. on the other hand, the pest isis destroys most of it. so if they need to do something about this issue, should focus on isis instead of these people just trying to make a living even though it's highly unorthodox of making a living.
