    Hi, Thanks! The drill that I used was a vintage Millers Falls drill. I've made several of these winding machines with similar hand drills made by Craftsman and Yankee. There are many old drills like this available on ebay for less than $10. The main modification I did was to unscrew the original chuck, replacing it with the bow clamp (made from fuel tubing and small hose clamps). I also removed the wooden handles from the drill, using those mounts to attach it to the wooden base that I made.

    Thanks Oleksandr. For the silver wire, the most common diameter is .30mm. I also use .20mm, .25mm and .35mm diameters to add more or less weight. As for the length of the lapping, the length will vary somewhat, but the total length is usually about 75mm long, but could be anywhere from 65mm to 85mm, depending upon the desired effect to the weight and balance of the bow..

    This is a wonderful method, and I've now used it for two bows. Thank you so much!

    Thanks for the question HSTrueMan. The white part that holds the upper part of the bow was made from ~.5" thick felt that was made for piano hammers. I got it from the guy that tunes my piano. I know of someone that made this part from several thicknesses of an old mouse pad, cut and glued together. All you really need is something that is a bit stiff, but has some softness to it to hold the bow in the right place and to prevent it from getting scratched as it turns in the fixture.

    Josh I really enjoyed your videos. I am hoping that you will post more and demystify the entire bow making process. Of course you can keep some secrets.

    I have a lot of questions:
    1 How to most excellent weigh instrument bow?-Where should be center of gravity in bow?
    2. AD 1: I bought big stock of silver wire (0,3 mm) and i don`t won`t to use other wires. Where is point of starting a silver grip and point of finish the grip?
    Thanks

    A violin bow is approximately .345”diameter=1.083” per turn of winding.
    Using sterling silver wire
    28 ga has a diameter of .0128”, weighing .280 gm/ft ; requires 78 turns/inch x 1.083= 7.04 ft of wire/inch and weighs1.97 gm/inch of winding,
    30 ga has a diameter of .0100” weighing .155 gm/ft; requires100 turns/inch x 1.083”= 9.03 ft of wire/inch and weighs1.40 gm/inch of winding
    3” of 28ga winding weighs approximately 5.91 grams
    3” of 30ga winding weighs approximately 4.20 grams

    Hello Sir, love your work! Would you mind telling what kind of soldering you've used to sold silver? I still haven't found any answers from other makers. Hope you can help me! Thanks 👍

      Thanks for watching the video and for the question. The solder that I use is a silver-bearing, lead-free solder that is made for electronics work. The diameter of the solder is around .5mm and the silver content is 3%. There are many different brands of solder sold, but this type of solder can be purchased online through an electronics repair supply or through Amazon.

    Hi Josh, Cool video! I'm a Musician here in NYC and I've been doing fretted instrument repairs for 10 years here in town. I'm now getting into Violin and Bass repairs. Lots of Upright players here! I love your jig for wrapping the wire. I have one of those Millers Falls hand drills. I'm thinking of building the same jig. Did you put a bolt through the back where the small handle unscrewed? I think it's no problem to match the threads at the hardware store.

    Hi, this is a great video. I was wondering what power your soldering iron is, and what type of silver solder you use? My experience with soldering the lapping is that it requires a high enough temperature to melt the solder quickly while minimising the risk of scorching the stick. Thanks!

    • @wf2312
      @wf2312 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Try using rosin solder since silver solder usually won't melt until the wire is red hot.

    Do you ever do silk wrapping? If so, does it get shellac or does it stay unprotected?

    • @FineViolinBows
      @FineViolinBows  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, I do silk wrappings, but not with the wrapping fixture
      seen here. When I do silk, I always do it by wrapping the threads by hand because I'm usually inter-wrapping two colors or wrapping silk with tinsel. I've never covered silk
      lappings with shellac, and don't really see a reason to do so.
