Very few things make me cry and the "Life goes on" solo is one of those things. C.C. is so good at literally "playing" the guitar and having fun with it instead of being cerebral about it, especially in a decade where everyone tried to outplay each other.
CC is great and the reason I started playing guitar in 5th grade back in like 1988/89. Back in the 80s and 90s there was a guitar shop in L.A called Guitars R Us. Check out the solo to "life goes on" by poison one of the best CC solos ever . And the solos to every rose has its thorn and something to believe in are so full of emotion like no other guitarist ever
C.C. Is the best guitar player ever, life goes on is the song to prove it but I won’t forget you and cry tough are great guitar solos as well, he’s sober now and playing awesome
A cassette copy of Poison's Open Up And Say Ahh was the first album I ever bought. This was back in the winter of 1989. I love C.C.'s frenetic, over-the-top style of playing and the way he peppers his flashy runs with all sorts of whammy bar antics. There's no mistaking his signature style!
He was only sloppy when he was high as F*. But I have to say he is also ....even that being said... He is probably the #1 guitarist for also pulling off amazing sh*t sometimes when he was drunk and high to the point it's unimaginable how he could do that ...
C.C. DeVille is a kick ass guitarist , great song writer and superb entertainer.most rock critics are failed musicians who are trying to fill a void and compensate for their own shattered dreams by spewing venom against anyone whose music doesnt appeal to them , in the end their vitriol is more a reflection of themselves than those they criticize
One of the greatest of all time!!! King of the arpeggio and make up/ hair was part of the deal in those days. Cecil is a guitarist, a guitar hero. Nothing more nothing less!
People who hate on C.C. for being sloppy yet worship Slash crack me up. Both have improved immensely since sobering up but Slash was much worse than CC back in the day (in a live setting). CC does not deserve the hate and I'm glad to see he can still impress the kids. :)

Great video, Ash! I think C.C is an underrated guitarist. I'm glad you talked about him because hardly anyone talks about him. I love his solo on Something To Believe In. I still have a few Guitar World Magazines that I still have back in the day. They're collecting dust. 😄
CC is one of the most underrated guitar players. He always knew exactly what a song needs. His leads work so perfect for all the Poison stuff. You should also check out his side project Samantha 7 which was so amazing

Excellent visual & sound quality & superb Schenker playing, as all his fans know him for. Give it a viewing & a listen & tell me you’re not seriously impressed 😊 Not bad for a 60yr old rocker 😂.

I made a joke about poison coming out during that stadium tour with Def Leppard and Motley Crue and just killing it, and you know what they freakin' did. So for anybody else who doesn't like Poison or CC or whoever could just deal with it.
Wow Ash! I loved your video. The analysis and all the sections are great. Personally, I think CC was the perfect fit for the Poison formula. Let's not forget the period where Blues Saraceno was (I saw Poison live with this lineup too) and the great Richie Kotzen and, without underestimating the work of both musicians, CC was definitely the right one. Sometimes we confuse virtuosity and technique with what is memorable and most appropriate. I don't know if you know the current guitarist of The Defiants and Danger Danger, Rob Marcello. I highly recommend his work. I love it! Keep up this work, it is very good. A big hug for you with all my love.
Thank you for supporting my content and for the encouragement! I think C.C. was perfect for Poison too. I think also, which I meant to say in my video, that sometimes people think it’s uncool to like something that’s commercially successful. I agree with you, CC was (is) a great guitarist. There were 3 highly successful guitarists from the 70s-80s that always are dissed, whether due to image, style of music, etc. Ace Frehley, CC, and Mick Mars. All 3 of those guys have MANY hit songs to their credit, songs that are still popular 40-50 years later. And not just 1 song. Many songs. And regarding KISS, a boatload of hit songs (majority, although certainly not all... in the ACE era). The hits by themselves would likely exceed the entire catalog of music by most of these artists. Gene Simmons once said something to effect that its not about how fast you can play but do people remember and enjoy your melody. All 3 of the guys I mentioned were riff masters. Fans love their riffs. People who diss commercial success are SDE (small D__k energy). If its all about skill, then is "Tina S" the best guitarist of all time? I mean seriously, you dont have to LIKE any of these artists, but people who diss them are simply losers. A guy like Ace has more hits and "recognizable" songs than most of the so-called guitar-gods have combined. The ultimate test of skill is whether someone is willing to PAY you for your skill. There's a reason why Kiss, Poison, the Beatles, Motley Crue, etc are legends and how fast or technical they play their instruments is not relevant to their skill because the marketplace rewards those who are "best", regardless of whether you like the artist or not.
Love CC and I also didn't know he played the solo on Cherry Pie. Whaaaat Slash in Poison... that would've been interesting lol I agree they both ended up where they were supposed to be!
C.C. was/is a good guitar player. Not a virtuoso, but good. He's also a strange guy from what little I've seen of him outside of just guitar playing, but I've never met him so he might be really cool. IDK
I love Poison! I think people need to relax and allow themselves to enjoy what the band did. Your playing is once again, very good. I really like your white Strat with the humbuckers also.
I think the library of songs that he nailed with Poison speaks for itself. Yeah, he was pretty showoff-ish at concerts back in the day (probably high out of his mind too) but he's a great guitarist with some iconic riffs and licks
C.C. is great! Poison gets a lot of stick because they were the most emblematic of the glam bands of the era--the album cover for "Look What the Cat Dragged In" is iconic--and a lot of people hate music that's fun. And because he's the guitarist, C.C. gets that hate by association. And whenever people want to show live video of "C.C. sucks!" they inevitably pick something from the cocaine years, like The Unskinny Bop solo from 1991 (which is hilarious!).
I like cc deville playing when he's not trying to prove to everyone that he's the fastest. Every rose and songs like that showcase his melodic, tasteful playing.
In the studio, for those first few huge records, C.C. was the professional in the band while the others were average to novice musicians at best. I wasn’t a fan in the 80’s but as a musician I can most certainly see his skills in song writing and solo writing. He is an 80s guitarist, inside and out, and in the genre he is a pro.
It's easy to be critical as a music journalist or music critic. It's a lot harder to do the considerable work to get good enough to play even in bands far less accomplished or successful than Poison. I find it humorous that these guys take advantage of the distance of time and the music being out of fashion to make a name for themselves and seem cool trashing musicians who have done more with their lives than write an article in a guitar magazine. That said. I always liked Poison. They were the band to hate even back in the day, but they had good songs, great musicianship and high-energy performances. Their fans loved them (and vice versa) and, if people were honest, even a lot of people who claimed to hate them probably did too. I didn't know about the Cherry Pie solo. But the Warrant guys allegedly didn't play on their first album either. Jani Lane had the lion's share of talent in that group. Solid video tribute to the wild man of rock guitar. God bless.
@@guitarbyash I don’t know if they’re on your radar, but I’d like to encourage you to check out my favorite band, Tora Tora. They’re actually still around and producing great music. But their first two albums are excellent and flew way under the radar because they didn’t get great promotion from the record company. Some great guitar work and songwriting and an incredible vocalist.
I always liked CC’s playing. He’s not the greatest but nor are any of us. He’s laid some stinkers live for sure likely due to substance abuse. I have seen greats not great live before. He has his own style, high energy and lots of people enjoy it.
Some people are ignorant to what makes a guitarist good . He was technically good like others but was unique in his sound and creating riffs . Like a pop rock version of slash . Unfortunately after he became clean or cleaner the mental inspiration sort of left him . But his word on their first three albums has to recognized as at least good
respect.... no he isn't EVH or steve vai but he's more than competent. he caught a lot of flack for being the hair band of the 80's and i think that was unnecessarily mean. every rose, talk dirty, ride the wind, have all stood the test of time.
Only thing about CC back in the day was his substance abuse. I was so disappointed with his live performances. I was at a concert and he started playing the wrong riff to a song midway through, the band was like 🤷♂️ what are you doing. They actually fired him at one point. Truth be told though he has a ton iconic guitar riffs that everyone knows.Good job Ash !!😁👍🎸🤘
I live under a rock...until now l never even heard of this guy...guitarist like Stevie Ray Vaughan, John Mayer, Mark Knopfler seem to create wavelengths that penetrate said rock under which l reside...all that being said - l most definitely agree that we need to Agree to Disagree..human beings are the same & different at the same time - that's what makes us unique...and if l may, l would like to give honorable mention to Mr Stanley Jordan - that cat there,,,well,,,he's like in a whole nother' dimension
Oh wow, I’m surprised you’ve never heard of him! You definitely like some of the greats! 🤘 I will have to look Stanley Jordan up! I’m not familiar with him. Thanks for watching!
Ash, I agree with you. I think CC's solos and riffs were just right for the songs they created. I've seen Poison perform live three times since the year 2000 and he did a great job each time. Regarding the video from 1991 that you posted, that was not a good year for CC. The drugs, drinking, and in-fighting were taking a toll which culminated with CC's sabotage (for lack of a better term) at the MTV music award in Sept. 91 which led to his firing from the band. Here is a quote from Nuno Bettencourt from his interview with Rick Beato last year. "I've had people tell me that CC Deville, they think he is the worst guitar player of all time. I said, I call B.S. because CC Deville is the best guitar player that Poison ever had. Because CC Deville has his lane and I've watched that show and they throw a party and a half. I'd rather watch them more than some of the most talented bands in the world that everybody thinks is the greatest musicians ever. I had a ball. I watched it I loved it. He's all in, he plays what he plays, and that's that. I get more out of that than somebody, I don't know, playing circles around him and saying he is a joke. He is not a joke. It doesn't matter how limited, because if that's the case then AC/DC sucks. If this is about playing and how good you are technically, then Angus Young should have retired a long time ago. He plays a lot of open chords, BUT it is so good. It's brilliant. It's genius and AC/DC is the best arena rock band of all time......."
Are you sure this isn't about Lars? 🥁😮😁 Poison wasn't my favorite but they're pretty good and I thought his guitar playing was pretty cool. And your playing was "top hat" SlAsh Blair! 🎸🎩🤘
CC got hate because he lived many of the "haters" dream and, CC was freakin loud, Poison was loud in concert when I saw them in 91, so f*ck them, Id take CC over ANY guitarist ever!!! I always liked the solo in Life loves a tragedy better than life goes on, although its great.
He's an underrated player. He took so much heat because he wasn't playing a million miles per hour and the goofy thing they had him do in some of the videos, in my opinion.
CC DeVille is my absolute favorite. The hate for him isn’t justified at all. In 1986 when “Look what the cat dragged in” was released, you could argue that there were better players but here in 2024 CC is better than ever and most of the other 80s players are embarrassing.
The fact that CC came right back into the rhythm right on Que means he’s probably played close to the original solo so many times, maybe he was board of Unskinny Bop it was a pretty big hit and he was probably sick of it but had played it so many times he could just wank around the entire solo section, plus he was higher than a Giraffe’s Vay Jay and it’s rock n roll right, I got no problem with his unskinny solo you showed. Everything was scripted and tv delayed at the time about the only way you could protest is to do something like that people are taking Poison way too seriously if they think CC isn’t in on the joke
@@guitarbyashSchenker’s solo to his composition Rock Bottom which he recorded with UFO in 1974 & always plays live, is 7-8 minutes long consistently. The fans love it as it includes many nuances & styles of rock guitar solo playing. Give it a listen on UFO’s superlative double live recording from 1979, recognised in the rock guitar community as one of the top 5 live rock albums ever. Strangers In The Night. 😃👍
C.C. DeVille is a fantastic guitarist. I've never been a fan of Poison so I didn't really pay any attention to C.C. Years later I heard a Poison song on the radio I had never heard before and the guitar parts were amazing. So I started listening to some of his less popular stuff and was impressed. Had he been in a more "serious" band, he would be far more well respected and recognized amongst other guitarists. Like you said at one point, his playing is improvised yet melodic and expressive. He's also extremely versatile, he can play a wide range of styles and he plays them like a natural. I agree with your thoughts on him. Excellent video and excellent paying, Ash
He writes some catchy stuff but its pretty basic and a little cheesy at times. There are a lot of other players I would rather listen to but I do respect his ability to write a hook.

Good job Ash. I'm a CC fan. Hit it CC.
Thanks a bunch! C.C., pick up that guitar and talk to me! 🎶
Awesome riffs played them great Ash ❤️🎸❤️
Thank you! 😁
Like him or not he is a great guitarist also talked to him at a place in LA and he is nice 👍
I’ve heard that he’s really nice before!! And yes, a great guitarist for sure 🤘
Trolls want to hate CC just to hate him. Myself I think he's great.
I think he’s great, too! 🎉
I personally think Life Goes On is one of the best guitar solos ever
In the studio, for those first few huge records, C.C. was the professional in the band while the others were average to novice musicians at best. I wasn’t a fan in the 80’s but as a musician I can most certainly see his skills in song writing and solo writing. He is an 80s guitarist, inside and out, and in the genre he is a pro.
I love the 80s guitarists, and C.C. Is definitely one of my favs! Thanks for contributing to the discussion!! :)
Cc is the heart of Poison
Love C.C.! ⚡️
🤘
😄🤘
CC is great - the perfect fit within Poison and they weren't the same without him (even if the only member not a former Central PA guy)
I agree that he was/ is a great fit!! 🤘⚡️
God bless.
Thanks for watching!! Poison is such a fun and energetic band, and I’ve always liked C.C.! 😄✨
Love his style! He rocks 🤘🤘
Some people are ignorant to what makes a guitarist good . He was technically good like others but was unique in his sound and creating riffs . Like a pop rock version of slash . Unfortunately after he became clean or cleaner the mental inspiration sort of left him . But his word on their first three albums has to recognized as at least good
Thanks for taking the time to weigh in on the debate! The first three albums are definitely my favs. And of course the greatest hits album. :)
@@guitarbyash Sure it's a topic not talked about enough from such a unique time in music
Imo C.C. is an amazing guitar player.
Yesss! 🙌
"Life goes on" Solo 👉🏼 *mic drop*
I LOVE that solo! 🙌
respect.... no he isn't EVH or steve vai but he's more than competent. he caught a lot of flack for being the hair band of the 80's and i think that was unnecessarily mean. every rose, talk dirty, ride the wind, have all stood the test of time.
Indeed they have! So glad you appreciate C.C.! 🤘
❤
🤘🎸
Only thing about CC back in the day was his substance abuse. I was so disappointed with his live performances. I was at a concert and he started playing the wrong riff to a song midway through, the band was like 🤷♂️ what are you doing. They actually fired him at one point. Truth be told though he has a ton iconic guitar riffs that everyone knows.Good job Ash !!😁👍🎸🤘
I totally get how that would be disappointing! He does have a ton of iconic riffs and beautiful solos. Love C.C.! 🤩 Thanks for watching.
He's great when sober!!
C.C. Rocks! 🤘🤘
Thanks for telling me about that quote. I had not heard that. The great Nuno has spoken! 🔥🔥
Didn’t Richie Kotzen also play for Poison?
Yes, he played for them for 2 years 🤘
Besides his demons he fought with Good guitarist and showman Some cheese rock skinny bop and such but a rocker for sure!
I agree that he rocks! 🤘
@@guitarbyash can't wait to hear you over achieve his lead 😎 take care! 🎶
Are you sure this isn't about Lars? 🥁😮😁
Poison wasn't my favorite but they're pretty good and I thought his guitar playing was pretty cool. And your playing was "top hat" SlAsh Blair! 🎸🎩🤘
Thank you, Brent! Glad you can still appreciate them even if they aren’t your favorite! :)
If there is a good CC solo. It's the song "life goes on"
That’s my favorite solo by him! ⚡️
CC got hate because he lived many of the "haters" dream and, CC was freakin loud, Poison was loud in concert when I saw them in 91, so f*ck them, Id take CC
over ANY guitarist ever!!! I always liked the solo in Life loves a tragedy better than life goes on, although its great.
CC is great! Love his solos and riffs 🤘
I haven't listened to Poison in decades. I was never a fan, but I think I'll give them another chance. Thank you for your excellent content. 😊
Thank you for watching!! 😄
He's an underrated player. He took so much heat because he wasn't playing a million miles per hour and the goofy thing they had him do in some of the videos, in my opinion.
I agree that he is underrated! 🤘
I love your videos and I love you.
Thanks for the support! 🤘🤘
CC Deville is Awesome!!!
I agree! 💥🎉
C.C. is not a huge favorite but he's not a bad guitarist. He just has own way of doing things. Which isn't always according to everyone's taste.
I think he’s a good guitarist! I guess everyone has their own way of doing things, and you’re right, not everyone will like it!
CC DeVille is my absolute favorite. The hate for him isn’t justified at all. In 1986 when “Look what the cat dragged in” was released, you could argue that there were better players but here in 2024 CC is better than ever and most of the other 80s players are embarrassing.
CC rocks! Love his riffs and solos! 🤘😄
The only thing I don't like about CC, is that he shows off too much and goes off track on the songs when he performs live
Haha 😆 I would say that 7 minute solo he did is definitely an example of that 🤘 I appreciate his enthusiasm though!
He's ok. Not great. Not terrible. He was sloppy when I saw him live back in the day.
I would’ve loved to see him back in the day!
I saw him live in the past few years. 🤘
Hey Bruce! Thanks for watching. I agree that C.C. is really talented! He’s a great guitarist 🤘
He writes some catchy stuff but its pretty basic and a little cheesy at times. There are a lot of other players I would rather listen to but I do respect his ability to write a hook.
He does write a good hook! 🤘🎸
