Her controversial “clackatura” technique was a CHOICE. She doesn’t do that here. She uses it in the commercial recording. This aria is brutally difficult. It sits high with many, many high Cs and high Ds. At 55, she certainly shows us how a voice can be preserved when properly coordinated/balanced. No wobble in THIS voice. Ever.
WONDERFUL!!! Finally a video of this wonderful singer... I don't care if they say she souds like a turkey. To me, she's just amazing, just listen to her Der Holle Rache.
I read that in Italy they called her "L'usignolo holandese" meaning the Dutch nightingale..... A person's opinion depends on what that person has in mind, sometimes more than on the object of that opinion.... However, objectively, I think the nightingale would fit, in this case.... As also this rendition proves... :-)
I have just checked the date I bought my first Deutekom opera and it was in 1973! What an exciting voice she had then and still has in this clip! Thank you for the happy memories eelco67!!!
This was always a thrilling timbre. She was dignified and cool on stage but that big, bright sound of hers with those bang-on top notes and a warm lower register made her a singer to admire. That she held her own on the world stages with the likes of Sutherland and Sills as her chief rivals, says a great deal about her abilities and worth. She sang Verdi really well, especially VESPRI and her recording "Tu che la vanita," from DON CARLO shows an artist of deep conviction.
At times i either love or hate this singer. Just listen to her voice in this aria and remember she sang Norma, Abibaille in Nabucco and by this time she had been singing for some twenty odd years. An amazingly preserved voice.
I wonder why so many modern singers these days forego their trills. In fact, I haven't met a modern singer with a trill. Anyone? Deutekom's trill is so effortless... she doesn't need to start it or take a breath before it or anything--just flips it on like a switch.
To me she incarnates the essence of a Mozartian voice, even when she aspirates the coloratura passages and scales - it doesn't bother me and personally her O zittre Nicht is the most beautiful to me. Anyways, her voice is like a laser beam.. cuts right through, pure, even and precise.
A real singer, as those 200 years ago. Kind of Malibran or Lilli Lehmann, and not because of their voices (different classifications) but because of simple... greatness, grandeur, grandeza.
Wonderful singing but very poor recording technic. A big part of the sound of her voice is filtered out in this recording unfortunately. Anyway Deutekom shines again with her amazing voice and performance.
WOW!!! NO MORE "CLUCKORATURA" AT ALL!!! This is AWESOME! With that gone, she really DID become as great as everyone said! Too bad I missed that! I had no idea she ended up becoming this phenomenal!
She sure had aboud the best technique in the world in her days, but her voice hurts my ears in a Castafiore sort of way on the high f's and such like some other soprano's don't.

may she rest in peace - Cristina was one of the greatest !!!
She is only going back where she came from, and continue singing in joy in heaven

Just stunning. I feel humbled just watching this vid. She was amazing.
A real dramatic coloratura soprano - her Konstanze is outstanding - thats the way it should sound !!!!
Superbe.

Brilliant! On of the great coloraturas of our time!
Great singing! Such breath management, accuracy & stead fastness.
DAZZLING AND MESMERIZING! What a technique! Sadly missed. RIP.
Lovely, she always had a brilliant bright tone. Amazing technique, and never a look of strain. She looks stunning here as well.
A REAL TREAT to see this great artist up close!
Thanks so much for sharing.
She's in her 50s here? This is fantastic. She has one of the cleanest emissions of sound I've ever heard, her Turkey coloratura technique aside.

It’s called perfect technique...

People miss her voice. Such an amazing instrument which resisited with aging.
Incredible t think that at this time she had already sung Amelia (Ballo) and Turandot. Then walks in and sings this like it is easy. Amazing
Bellissimo, stupendo!
It´s interesting she´s not using her usual technique for coloratura as for example in Queen of the Night aria.
I think she did it on studio version
Same observation.
It's interesting to listen to her perform this aria using a different technique
Wonderful singing but very poor recording technic. A big part of the sound of her voice is filtered out in this recording unfortunately. Anyway Deutekom shines again with her amazing voice and performance.
Extraordinaria!
Amazing... still great for her age. Brava!
Fabulosa!!! Muy musical!!!
Écoutez la version studio de cet air. Elle est spectaculaire. Quelle supercantatrice.

Her coloratura technique was not the best, but her voice itself was first-class and her singing was just effortless.
elegantissima :)
She died August 7th this year (2014). She had fallen at home and slipped into coma, then died.
Very sad :(
Anche Gruberova
Altro che Callas, siamo molto sopra!
Dove aveva questa voce la Callas?
In my opinion she is the best Konstanza🌹
La Callas olandese.
She sure had aboud the best technique in the world in her days, but her voice hurts my ears in a Castafiore sort of way on the high f's and such like some other soprano's don't.
