Sitting at work in Canada, been away for 3 years, and decided to start youtubing early surfing in Australia. Immediately clicked on this when it was suggested as I'm a Mona boy myself. Really amazing to see. You know the history is there but sometimes it feels like its disappeared and doesn't exist when you've been away for so long.

My dad was Peter Trimnell-Ritchard. He used to tell me about all of these surfie stories from the 60's. Fighting the rockers (just fists and a bit of fun), going to Arms at Newport, driving up to Qld for surf trips in his Dad's Jaguar. All of his mates hanging around their house and eating all of his Mum's food (someone ate a whole roast one time and was banned for a few weeks). RIP Dad.

Idyllic footage, very lucky that russell had the inspiration and equipment.
A shot of the rubbish tip behind the beach and the coppers that woulds kick your arse after dark at the beach would be cool.

The diff between now and then is the lite weight boards. The modern surfer can "muscle" his way into positions, the old heavy boards had to be caressed into positions with soul.... Not much of that now

    • @walkcyclesydney1725

Hi Broderick, you are right about modern day surfing, but it is just an evolution that continues. The 60s though was really a great era to surf. Phil

Hands down, the best surf film I have watched in ages! Thanks for the intimate look into your wonderful life of surf! I grew up in that era, in California, and I can really relate to your vibe, and I love seeing what you guys were up to in the 60's. God bless.... and show us more! great little video!

Hi Rodney, it was a pleasure to take an old film in 8mm and upgrade it to a 16 -9 film. In those days Miki Dora, Lance Carson, Dewey Webber and many others were our heros. The films of Bruce Brown and McGillivary - Freeman and many more was our inspiration to start making surf films. Phil
