The bass and the altos overlap, and then the bass stops and it's just the altos, the "sa" of the last "sein" overlaps the "sa" in "sanft und still", and then Tod ist mein Schlaf worden, death has become my sleep. I can't avoid crying when I tell other people about this moment

      Funny how we atheists are so often attracted to sacred music. Even the militant Christopher Hitchens had a passion for it.
      While we may not believe that the messages of religion are true, we nevertheless moved by the strong emotions they convey.

    • @openmusic3904
      @openmusic3904 7 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      As an atheist myself I think one of the biggest questions I ask myself is what is it like to be religious and experience a connection with the perceived divine? Whether true or not the idea of experiencing a connection with God(s) becomes an unattainable goal due to the way my brain works as a non-believer. But there is always a part of me that is envious when I hear religious people talk about how they commune with God and how much peace it brings them; for me it seems like a much more beautiful world to live in, even if it is a false world. However when I listen to Bach's Mass, or Mozart's Requiem, or indeed Allegri's Miserere Mei Deus I get a very profound "Aha!" moment where for a brief time I get it, I understand what it feels like to feel connected to something divine, to feel the exhilaration of being in the presence of an transcendent force and the sensation is electrifying(Listened to the Bach B Minor Mass before this). It may be the case that some atheists are drawn to sacred music because it offers them a taste of something that in everyday life is out-of-reach for to them due to nature of not being a believing in a God. It certainly seems to be the case that humans always desire what they can't have, and if this is the case what better choice could be made than listening to the sacred music written by some of the greatest artistic geniuses in western culture! Sorry for going on but I just thought I would share my thoughts.

    • @dionbaillargeon4899
      @dionbaillargeon4899 7 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Strong agnosticist here. I can totally relate to you. While listening to this music I feel almost as if my instincts pushed me to believe. They say "yes". But my reason keeps saying "no". I think this conflict might be what makes listening to sacred music such an intense experience for non believers. Also, death is far easier to acccept for religious people: they just assume they will still exist forever in the afterlife, whereas we must come to terms with the idea of dissolving in something greater and different from ourselves, which is still comforting and spiritual in a sense, but scarier and not nearly as easy to accept. For us, sacred music is not just moving or reassuring, but something that puts us in contact with a difficult and disturbing reality. This gives it an extra intensity, sense of sorrow and, quite paradoxically, an even deeper meaning that trascends the sacred scriptures.

    • @carlosnogues5668
      @carlosnogues5668 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's the difference between "sacred music" and just "religious music" as sung in most churches nowadays, with battery, lots of noise and "edifying" lyrics. Bach, Palestrina, Allegri and so were composers of Sacred music. On the ohter hand, believing in God doesn't depend on you (I cannot decide that from now on I wil believe whateve.) According the Bible, taken by many as God's word, it is God himself who gives, or not, faith in Him...

    Only Bach can give the most honorable, justified, and dignity to the human voice(music only in name only but expresses the longing of the soul to be with its creator or connection with the All-mighty) at least that is my instinctive deep down profound reaction to Bach which no other composer has such an effects but not downgrading Beethoven, Mozart, Wagner in any ways but Bach's music hits to the crux of the human condition as others have vainly tried as aforementioned.

  • @fredhoupt4078
    @fredhoupt4078 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    According to James Gaines, in his book "Evening in the palace of reason", this is one of the earliest pieces to have survived (see his comments on page 92, hard cover). What amazes is that Bach was only 22 years old when it was created. He was imbued with such creative depth and posterity, history, all of us are the beneficiaries.

      At age 22 Newton and Einstein had done their best stuff. Then there is Mozart

    • @fredhoupt4078
      @fredhoupt4078 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mozart was a true child prodigy whereas Beethoven, Bach, Handel, Scarlatti showed normal growth at the expected age. I don't know about Einstein's age but his contributions to advancing our understanding of physics and the laws of nature came when he was young.

    • @rickmarti77
      @rickmarti77 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Beethoven,Handel and Bach were fully cooked by the age of 22.Wolfgang would have not been Mozart without constant nurturing from Leopold and Nannerl

    • @fredhoupt4078
      @fredhoupt4078 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      With respect, I don't think that Beethoven was ever fully cooked. He continued to expand his musical thought horizons until his dying days. As for Woolfy, I think he probably did his best work after his mother passed and he tossed his dad out the door. His precocious musical genius, especially in his last works for solo piano, show that he was beginning to pick up on the direction that Haydn was exploring and into which Beethoven would eventually lead. Alas, he died before he could produce even more of his enormous output. What I am learning about Bach from this book is that he was much more of an innovator within the strict parameters of Baroque styles, than I had previously thought. It is said that even his sons, who pioneered the Rococo styles....effected the older Bach's music writing.

    The music of Bach is refined, it is music ment to reach the soul, for that was to whom it was written. Bach wrote more than I-IV-I-V sequences; he wrote more than just four chords in a row repeated with new text, instead he text with power, utalizing litterary techniques (annaphora, juxtaposition)(look at the German) and then creates a work for the soul, which which he taps. "The aim and final end of all music should be none other than the glory of G-d and the refreshment of the soul." - Bach

    These are alto recorders. The original flute parts are f3 to f5, but the copy of the organ part is one tone lower than the other parts. Probably for an organ tuned one tone higher than the recorders.
    I suspect that the score was transcribed by an organist who could not imagine that the organ part was the one to transpose.
    Of course there might have been eb recorders, but Bach did not use such instruments elsewhere as far as I know.

(Was it produced for Television?) It's so wonderfully done; clearly a lot of time and technical effort when into making this; I just don't understand where there's no listing in the credits whatsoever; nothing embedded in the clip, and nothing in the TH-cam text. I feel the same way, except I'm not religious. Beethoven and Mozart are without a doubt masters of the craft (no-one in his right mind would dispute that) but to me Beethoven is a tad too romantic and Mozart a tad too superficial. At least when compared to J.S Bach. The only work I think comes close to Bach's best pieces is Beethoven's Missa Solemnis. Wagner 's operas are way over the top to me (sometimes it feels like he's trying to pummel you to death with the orchestra) but to each his own.

    Yeah, I, and many others, understand the words. A person who was truly rational and aware would realize immediately the wisdom of putting one's house in order given that our time on this planet is so short. We must die and it is important and sensible that we prepare for that inevitability and not leave a mess behind us for others to clean up. How anyone could find this music miserable defies the imagination.

    Intonation not good in the intro. And why does everyone play the intro so slow? The choir is magnificent though.

    I first watched it in 2001, in 5th grade, at age 11. (Can you believe it?) I first saw it on Ovation TV (when it was REALLY worth watching for me, with wonderful documentaries, Howard Goodall’s notwithstanding). I believe that it was the same time my recorder unit in my elementary school music class was learning “Hot Cross Buns.” (As someone who survived playing it in previous ones before moving to FL from my native NJ at the time, it was nice to revisit that for me.)

      Besides seeing Michala Petri on Classic Arts Showcase on my public access channel around the same time, it was Koopman’s and the ABO’s performance of that cantata on Ovation TV that not only made me see the vastness of the recorder’s repertoire. It also REALLY got me at a YOUNG AGE into early music and period practice appreciation.

    To be fair, the words are not Bach's, he wrote the music. In some cases, he chose the text from the Bible or worked with a librettist. Much of his living was derived from the church.

    As one great poet once stated, " We can all learn something from every man" As I said, there is something to learn from J S Bach even as we can all learn from Mozart and Beethoven. Suffice it to say that I can appreciate either one without diminishing the other. It is good that you have stated that you are not religious as sometime being holier than thou is a hindrance to communication. Nonetheless, there are certain truths communicated through music that some people have mistaken for religion.

    Elevating Elvis Presley above J.S. Bach is like unto one preferring to eat a trough of offal
    instead of a perfectly aged and prepared steak.
    I think when it comes to musical rubbish, it is the other way around.

    Un des meilleurs enregistrements de cette cantate. Car ici précision et clarté "servent" une musicalité très pure, et de fait la parfaite exécution permet au texte de déployer toute son édifiante signification.

      I understand what you feel but to me they're ALL God's voice, the early ones no less, even if somewhat less advanced, though the most primitive Bach is vastly advanced beyond others. Soli Deo gloria!
