Wow! This is what I had in mind to close my large wide windows. Curtains don't keep the cold out, but I have a large window ledge. I had an idea to use foam boards to insert to the window and the ledges to keep it in place, but I had no idea how to do it and do it right. But found this video and it gives a good idea on what to do and how to do it! Great job!

Use 2-1/2 Owen's Corning foam board R-13. Buy spray can glue. Cut what ever fabric you want. Black cloth will absorb all frequencies of light and heat the room during the day through the conduction process. Under the fabric on the inside glue aluminum foil to work as a radiant barrier +2 R - value. 25% of heat loss comes from the wall and windows, 10% from floor, and 35% from your roof.
Does the wood on the front and back address flammable issues with board insulation? I want to just put cut pieces of board insulation in basement windows this winter and want to do it safely
We were concerned with making it look like blinds from outside and durability to shop accidents inside, so we used wood on both sides. A slab of insulation would also work. That's what people who insulate their garage doors use and it works fine.
If I want to cut insulation board and put in basement windows in the winter will I need to cover both side with wood or Sheetrock to deal with flammable issues?
I would, because a single piece of insulation is definitely not fire-safe. We used wood because we had it, and it's an outside window so fire safety isn't really necessary there.

I learned something new today. On all the ships I ever visited I noticed the "Z" on many of the hatches and port holes only to learn today what it means. Thanks again for another great video.
That's right! All of those hatch letters mean things. We thought it would look good on our panels and the the red Z matches how we them. We like the look so much we're about to add the black/yellow tape to the door on the opposite wall and add a red Z there too.
Cool socks! Something I have seen in other videos about gluing wood was to use salt in the glue. It is supposed to help keep the wood from moving while drying.

They are .75 inches thick and 2 inches wide. Make your thickness the same depth as whatever foam insert you use. Three quarters inch was what worked for us.

I'm starting to pre plan how to design the inside with some industrial looking gadgets to help sell the theme. you guys have all the answers to the questions i didn't know i had.

Have you had any issues with condensation building up on the glass behind the panels now it's insulated from the room's warmth? I could imagine it pooling at the base of the glass and interacting with whatever timber you have down there. Nice video btw!
Not at all, the seal is not airtight and there is enough space for air to flow around the panel. Not much space, but enough that we haven't had any issues.
You guys are funny! Question: would this work in the desert SW as far as the intense heat in summer? I’ve heard it can cause the window glass seal to get too hot and crack, losing its effectiveness. Thanks!
It should because it's essentially a wooden shutter that doesn't have hinges. We are dealing with South Georgia heat, which isn't quite as intense as yours, but we still get a lot of heat.
They've been pretty understanding because they sometimes make noise too. But we'll see how understanding they are when our Christmas display goes up this year. We're a bit nervous about this one...
Good job! I need to steal you idea for our back porch windows. They are screen windows but it will be nice to close them for times when we want to run an ac unit for our puppies or close then in winter just to cut down on the cold wind coming in. Then on beautiful days we can enjoy the screen windows, my husband can build most anything and I watch the money real close so this is do able. Your look great. Your HOA will absolutely think it’s woods blinds. And so cool on the shop side. Thank you for this video. My hubby will like this idea. God bless! Leslye
Many thanks! These panels are light, they cut the heat from the afternoon sun, and they can be taken down in seconds if we want to use the windows. And they really do look like blinds from the outside! Sounds like they would work great for your back porch, and they are super easy to build too!

It definitely cuts down on outside sound, as well as power tool noise I generate to outsiders. The foam inside does wonders!

I eventually rigged a piece of removable wood that holds it in place. Not as elegant, but it works.

Doing something like this to cut down the noise from across the street.
You won't be disappointed. Ours worked great and the front of the house looks completely normal. I'd definitely do this again.
