  • tomhess.net/Speed Today, I teach you how to fix your fretting-hand technique problems so that you can play guitar much faster and building speed becomes easier. Here’s exactly what we’ll cover in this lead guitar lesson [...]
First, I’ll show you how to get your left hand in the right position so that you can build guitar speed.
Second, you’ll learn how to increase the efficiency of your fretting hand instantly. More efficiency = faster (and easier) guitar speed.
Third, I show you how to lighten your touch when fretting notes on the guitar. This lighter touch will enable you to play more efficiently and play guitar faster.
Fourth, I’ll show you the exact practice routine to use to fix your fretting-hand positioning and efficiency and build incredible left-hand guitar speed.

This has got to be the most useful lesson on putting everything into synchronization. There is no better guitar lesson then this. 10 out of 10!

VERY useful lesson, thank you. I'm going to really retain and work on this principle of progressing from light left hand only touch/fretting to doing the same while picking

    I can't fret 3 - 5 - 7 without my pointer finger coming off if 3 when I extend to fret 7..
And my thumb comes up high while my hand turns completely. It doesn't swivel.. I'm a decent player but I know I could improve

Do you recommend planting index finger as often as possible or lifting after each note?

I almost never have problems with my fretting hand but with my picking.

Hey Tom, does this apply to bass guitar?

I keep trying this but the notes dud out *WAY* too quickly. I have to press harder than I want.
Maybe I need to adjust the action on my guitar, then I'll try again; might be too high.

The other tip that feeds into both tension and efficiency--use only the precise amount of force to fret the note. Pushing down harder not only lends to tension but is distance-time. Lightness of touch.
