It was time to make something better for sleeping up at the cabin and I am so excited to get this futon up to my cabin and test it out. This was a super fun project and I am happy with how it turned out. I really like the steel plate bracket details. Thanks for following along!

I really enjoy your videos and watching the progress on your off-grid cabin. I think it might have been better to flip the hinge over so the pin side would face down when the futon is opened for sleeping. You could have routed an opening for it to be recessed into so the sleeping surface would be completely flat.

It had an auto drain so no one ever checked it problem was the drain was plugged.

Synthetic steel wool works really well. Doesn’t come apart like a rag and doesn’t leave tiny metal particles like real steel wool. Also if you use it with oil or wax it really polishes your work piece.

Ipe was the original wood used for the Atlantic City Boardwalk. It lasted 100 years. Sand. Water. Wind. Stinky feet. It used to be one of the most expensive woods. It has a high silica content. Mask up when sanding ipe. Silicosis happens “down the road” of life. The fork we take happens early in life. “Mask” is a good 4 letter word when woodworking. Think of tropical hardwoods as if you were working with FIBERGLASS. Silica is glass. Trees incorporated it because it resulted reduced insect predation. Even insects don’t survive ingesting silica woods.

  • @DrIngo1980

I was confused why you'd call the frame (the thing you built) a "futon". So I checked wikipedia and lo and behold, you are referring to the American-style "futon", which actually includes the frame in its meaning. That was new to me, never heard that before.
If you'd ask a Japanese person they'd never even think about a frame, because in Japan "futon" means the actual mattress as well as the bedding/covers, plus a futon would usually be placed on tatami mats, not on a frame.
    Anyway, interesting build and video.

Try getting various fruit tree trunks from orchards that cut down old trees to plant young ones. You don't get very large pieces from them, but some of the wood looks great. And chances are you'll get them for the price of firewood. Usually the trunks are small enough that you can use your bandsaw to cut boards.
