while building and testing 3D-Printed Intake runners on a car i got no luck with the standard flat compression gaskets because the plastic has to low e-modulus compared to aluminium. To seal iam using o-rings in a grove now, so i dont need as high clamping load to get a perfect seal. Also making the flange parts thicker or with strengthening ribs helps a lot. For negating "creep" of the plastic i started using 2-4 belleville-washers to keep the bolt preload more constant when heatcycling to not have them come loose. Keep experimenting, its worth the trials imho.

Something I have seen in the bottom end of a cheap clamshell chainsaw cylinder was a machined groove and then RTV, the goove made the RTV work a bit like an o ring rather than sealing precision surfaces, that way you can seal much more complicated shapes than having to stick to standard o-rings.
Could be implemented in a print fairly simply.

Tip from someone who has learned. Make sure you're fire extinguisher is as close to being ready to go as possible. When things go up in flames you really don't want to be spending time removing supermarket tags, then the safety lock and THEN squeezing the trigger. You will probably have other things on your mind at the time. Been there, done that, got the picture.

Have you ever thought about internal super charging? Ie, cutting swirls into the outer halves of the crankshaft, like a vaccum cleaner blade, and feeding it through the crank berring, I think this would provide superior lubrication and cool the fuel, thus I'mproving preformance and extending high rpm life,of course you would have to use reed valves, tell me what you think😎keep wrenching brother!

  • @gearhed78

Maybe CNC thick flanges that go over the top of the 3D printed parts . That way, you have a small CNC process and fast prototyping for 3D printed parts. Maybe even build a flange collar into the top surface 3d printed parts to accept some beefy flanges. If the flanges are thick enough, your surfaces stay trued up.

Did a lot of work with 2-strokes back in the 90s. Found that super-charging only provides over-scavenging and not much else. Turbochargers, on the other hand, add that essential back pressure to increase cylinder pressure, and power. We were running and testing a V-6 twin turbo 2-stroke from Jaguar. It was a blast until Ford bought Jag and canned the project. But heck, the power!!!!!

on getting the printed parts working - well those that have room for a redesign anyway :
Can you make the area that the nuts make contact with have land all the way around the part? If you did then you could cut a thick metal washer (one big one that fitted over all bolts ) that clamped all the way around sandwiching the printed part between two metal parts. It wouldn't have space to bulge between the fixings eliminating the problem.

Seen a few guys fit steel flanges over the top of the printed flange maybe 2-3mm thick in hope to spread some of the fastener pressure across the whole face . Sometimes even pauseing the print and sitting the steel flange over before resuming. Stainless steel probably would be my choice if i were attempting something similar obviously wont work in every situation but would for a few here. Project is going well mate loving seeing the updates 👌

I've seen parts like that bow in the middle between the bolts before. And what I used to do to prevent that from happening was cut a piece of metal usually steel that's that's cut to where it can slide over the outside of the piece it's got the bolt holes in it and it reinforces the center between the bolts. Works great for leaking valve covers and carburetor parts. You can even put a little bend in your manufactured steel pieces and it will give like a spring action against the flat surfaces you're trying to push down more.

awesome dude it's a winner !!! have you thought of a electronic drive motor in the wheels/wheel [like the bmx ones for sale ] but with a wheel as the alternator as the driving charge and wired so that the burnt energy from drive motor/ exchanged /changed energy is fed back to the alternator to create a seemingly sealed circuit [ it has to be able to stop or be controlled not whizz off into a ball of light or loud bang and come back in 3 or 6 months time on a natural earth polarity change] keep being cool and love the music [ the briskey whiskey band ] lol

why dont you try to attach - for example - a metall-plate to the intake with screws or maybe glue it with 2k-glue, and then you can attach the intake with the metall-plate to the engine or whatever, so you deleted the leaking imo. in that moment the stiff solid metall-plate is the sealing part, it will not bend or anything. you also can try to deal with some thicker sealing-rings. you can grind a groove inside the carbon-poly thing and with the sealing ring you dont have to use huge forces to get air tight. what u think?

Hi, you can try to avoid plane surfaces with 3d prints, make something like a tube with an outside o ring, thus no load on the sealing due to clamping.

God that sounded just like a small nitro rc engine but at 50cc its a screamer WOW what revs was it at when the idle was to high ? slap a fly wheel on it and build that dyno quick

With the porting of the inlet transfers so high near the exhaust ports ..that is just purely rev format engine ..the dyno pull should be worth it ..
