I like what you've done and will make the same modification with each canteen cup I have. One thing I will do differently will be to put a small bend in the bail at the center of the bail so that when the cup is hanging by the bail it will not slip to one side or the other spilling whatever is in the cup.
Another spectacular segment from you James!! That was awesome and seemed very simple yet effective for the GI canteen set! Thanks again buddy for sharing what goes on inside that mind of yours and God bless you and yours!!!
The Vietnam War surplus canteen, canteen cup and mess kit are the best!! The butterfly handles sometimes need some tweaking to keep them from coming loose, but a little elbow grease and persistence pays off!! I've got two mess kits; a '65 Carrollton and a '66 Regal.
@@WayPointSurvival Good afternoon. I thought of one more detail. Bend eyelets in the wire around the Chicago screws and use both pieces of the Chicago screw. Maybe couple washers and locktite.
Very ingenious design! The foldaway bail, still can use GI handles, cup, stove and cover still functional like it was designed together. The only concern I have is that coat-hanger wire varies in thickness and strength. I would opt if possible for heavy gauge coat hanger for the Bail. However stronger wire coat hangers are hard to come by... I don't know how much the wire will deflect under water weight. I am also a tinkerer and build things. Thank you again. You saved me from watching cats playing pianos once again😊
@@WayPointSurvival A well thought out design. I'll be using stainless welding rod for strength and put a slight upside down 'V' at the peak of the bail. Small Gerber tool pliers will help with the bending. Thanks for the ideas.
MUCHAS GRACIAS JAMES , DESDE MEXICO FELICIDADES POR TUS IDEAS PARA CAMPING , LO HACEMOS EN EL PATIO DE LA CASA Y SOMOS FELICES , THANKS A LOT JAMES I SEE YOU SOON BE FINE
Superb hack, superb video always enjoy these videos, I hope my watching them repeatedly helps your viewing minutes because I love watching these and then revisiting them later. Your hobo series is another great series of hacks
Excellent video. I had been considering building a sling-type pot hanger from small-diameter stainless steel cable per the instructions on the Far North Bushcraft. Lonie posted an excellent tutorial on the subject. The idea works great provided there is a lip at the top of your pot for the cable sling to grab. The canteen cup "bellies in" at the front so the sling becomes problematic. I believe James has created a simple solution with easy-to-obtain parts
Nicely engineered! I have a utensil holder I was thinking of using as a bushpot but I don't really want to drill into it. This is the perfect solution.
very cool Mod. !!!!!!..........going to try this on my stanley cup cookset !!!!...... Im sure it will work well on the main cookset or on my lower metal cup/pot !!!! definitely better than putting them in and out of the fire or having to modify my pot lids ,,,,,, Thanks for all you do my friend you always come up with great tips that make things easier !!!
Great idea if you already have this canteen, but if you don’t have one yet, take my advice and get a German/Austrian/Swedish mess kit. You get the kidney shaped pot and top, but no canteen. The pot's bail locks so you can pour or hold it, and the top can be a fry pan, or small pot, amd is made to attach to a stick to hold over the fire. Wayyy better designed piece of kit, and no mods needed. The aluminum one is really cheap. Like $25-20.
@@WayPointSurvival Isn’t the us cup aluminum? There is a Swedish (?) kit that’s stainless, but it’s a little heavy since it’s a pot, pan and bowl, and it’s a bit hard to find.
Great video! 😁 thanks for the tip can’t wait to do it to all my G.I Canteen Cups 👍🏼 would love to see ya do a few canteen cup cooking videos on a wood fire and some of your homemade stoves alcohol, hobo, and back pack gas stoves 😁 thanks for sharing your knowledge of everything outdoors god bless 🙂
Nice job on that, I too bought a basic set that I still have & years later bought a stainless steel version after years of my original set more than proving its worth. Thanks for sharing this great method.
Hey I made it to number one spot. That's pretty clever James, maybe a little more complicated than some of your other builds but nonetheless clever but I'm sure I can get it done. I have the military canteen and I used to have the cup but I have no idea where that thing is, it is not in my camping and backpacking equipment. It's possible I let someone use it or it's possible that, no it's not possible that I lost it, so if I still have it it's in this house somewhere. I'm going to check my military belt rig and see if it's in there otherwise if it's not they don't cost that much so I may just purchase another. Anyway James this was a great little build and an very clever way to hang the cup. Stay vigilant my friend and may God bless.
I never get tired of seeing what your mind comes up with! You and I are very much alike when it comes to figuring out how to diy something for a certain use! Keep up the great work James!!! By the way, when I make your folding spoon from last video, I am going to take my Dremel and see about making the spoon into a spork. It hit me that since you are using a tablespoon, making it into a spork would still leave a good sized bowl left to be more useful than a standard spork. Will let you know how it goes! 😁
Another fantastic idea from Waypoint Survival and James Bender!
Thanks so much!

Yes, that would be a good addition as long as it doesn't stick out too much and hinder it's nesting abilities.
nice one
Awe hell. Just drill two holes below the flange and attach a wire handle. Easy peasy and done.
Sure, but I don't want to put any holes in my canteen cup.
Great idea ! Love GI canteens, this takes it to the next level. Thanks James .
Glad you enjoyed it!

Once again you hit it out of the park James. Love this mod.

You clearly spent a fair bit of time to get this just right. Thanks!
I did and thank you so much for watching!

Brilliant James Bender. I love when things are re-engineered. One idea gives birth to so many possibilities.
Thanks!

Yes, you could most certainly do that.

Thanks James, i carry two of these on my pack and that's going to make them more efficient for what I'm wanting.

Indeed.
W2G. That was brilliant

Fantastic.... Are you going to create a set of mods and hacks with the GI set like you did the Stanley 2 cupm
I'm not sure. I'll have to put some thought into it.

Yes, other kits have definitely solved this problem. However, I prefer not to cook in aluminum very much as it has long-term health risks.
