  • Lord of the Flies: how to build a Black Soldier Fly Larvae bin simply and cheaply.
    LTG.FYI/LOTF
    In my prior video (Harvesting Black Soldier Pupa from the bin - • 2021-09-27: Harvesting... ), I showed how the larvae are moving to a collection bottle. In this video, I move them to a separate container of topsoil where they will pupate for two to three weeks before emerging as imago (the Black Soldier Flies) from the pupa shell.

    Interesting. So I have that EXACT black bin with yellow cover. Right now, I have BSFL munching away on the food I have for them and my plan was to give 85% of them to my chickens and let the other 15% go so they can mate and keep the cycle going. I LOVE the idea of capturing them to make sure they get it on! Previously, everything I've read said just let them go and they'll find themselves, mate and find their way back to the bin (the fermenting food will attract them) and the cycle will repeat. Now I've got to think of a system that does everything I want.

    This is Great !!!
    Thanks for making these videos.
    I just clicked Play All on your
    Black Soldier Fly
    Playlist.
    Thanks for making a Playlist.
    I'm Leveling Ground for a Grand Chicken Coop, doing all the hard work up front. In the end, it will take almost no work to maintain.
    It'll start with a 6x12 Hen House with a 20x30 Run.
    The BSF🪰 system is on the list.
    Creating a self sustained system with in itself as feed.
    Thanks Again👊🏼🐓🥚

    👋 hello, thanks so much for the video... I'll be you 31st subcriber, 🤣. I just started learning about the soldier fly because I found them by accident in my compose pile and at first ..was wigged out...until I did some research and found out how amazing they are...sooo. I slapped together a bin with a hole in it, a peice of wood( thats the ramp) a ricotta cheese container to catch them in, and a peice of wood in a garbage bag to cover the top.. the next day I looked and saw a fly laying eggs in the carboard... I was so stinkin happy... so... Im along the journey with you to figure out a breeding system. I am in Pennsylvania and it gets cold here. My next thing is chickens too... so again thanks for the great videos😁😁😁

      Hi Stephanie,
      Thank you for your kind words, and for subscribing! Did you see the reciprocal bin building guide that I wrote, at LTG.FYI/LOTF ?
      Some of my recent videos have been relating to chickens, which may be of interest to you. I've been happy with the breed that I've been using, which are Transylvanian Naked Necks: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Naked_Neck

      Hi, Im in NJ- I started a BSF bin for the first time this year. I had success with them- the hens loved them. i noticed a difference in the intensity of the egg yolk color in my chicken eggs. I found I didn’t need the breeding bin- the BSF found their way into the bin on their own. i had a continuous cycle of larvae from May through the first week of October, there is a small amount of larvae left now that I am planning to overwinter in my compost tumbler. I will be repeating this next year. I started the bin with live BSF larvae from Popworms- they shipped an 8oz container which was perfect to start my bin- you avoid the “house fly phase” of starting the bin by adding small soldier fly larvae. Looking forward to hearing how the breeding cage works out for you. Thanks for the videos.

    This is my second year trying to farm BSF down in Australia. This year and I think its the extra rain I have within my traps BSFL within a day or so and at moment eating a 1kg fish in about 3 hours! Its strange now I see them as my freinds and every day look forward to see how they are advancing. Cheers for sharing info and look forward to see how your setup goes.

    Good job..Why don't you just put the bin with the dirt right next to the bin where they are feeding and have the tube drop them into that dirt directly. Put a hole into the lid of the bin with the dirt for the tube to run right into it..Get rid of the bottle. Unless you have chickens or fish that you want to feed.

    I live in NW Florida and never considered the whole process that you’re doing because my flies just reproduce on their own in nature and always return back to the Bin to lay eggs for about nine months out of the year and then they go dormant for a few months. I’m actually going to experiment with dehydrating them during that nine month. when I have an over abundance to supplement my chicken feed during the colder months.

      I'm spitballing different ideas to see if I can increase my yield, and ended up switching over to them burrowing on their own in nature due to ants and what I cover in the "Mistakes were made" section of the article: LTG.FYI/LOTF-Mistakes

      @@LTG-IV when I built my bin I put the legs in gallon cans that have used oil in them and I don’t have any ant problems. Before I did that I had continual ant problems! If you go fishing, occasionally, throw a couple of fish in your bin after you split the bellies open and you will have a very much abundance of black soldier flies. They seem to like meat better than anything else.

    My biggest problem where I'm at is humidity...they crall up the sides

    • @LTG-IV
      @LTG-IV  ปีที่แล้ว

      I'll need to think about (or probably Google) this, but my initial reaction would be to glue some silica gel packets into the roof of the bin and let it help absorb some of the humidity - moss would be better because it stores and releases humidity and why you're seeing its rise in bathrooms.
      But, BSFL are impervious and can handle a wide range of humidity, so, is it humidity or the water saturation at the bottom?

    • @doublydying2686
      @doublydying2686 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@LTG-IV they crawl out the sides and out of the bucket instead of using my ramps. I think I found a temporary solution though. I had some old rope laying around super glued it just below the rim so when I put the lid on they don't escape.

    do you have any advice for people who has winters in their area? should i put them in my basement? but i guess they would become flies and there would be too many flies in my basement?

    • @LTG-IV
      @LTG-IV  ปีที่แล้ว

      You'd be fine in a basement if you could control temperature, humidity, and lighting. The flies will need space to fly around, and surfaces such as plant leaves to mate. One of the more impressive, permanent setups that I've seen is in the @NWRedworms video at th-cam.com/video/U6H_O139taI/w-d-xo.html

    • @miningking70

      You need to maintain the temperature and high humidity. Fly screening cage is a must, needed to keep them contained at the fly stage.

    How to prevent the ant from going inside the bin?

    • @LTG-IV
      @LTG-IV  ปีที่แล้ว

      I ended up making a "moat" with a second bin and will be updating the article under the "Mistakes were made" section (LTG.FYI/LOTF-Mistakes) with photos to show how I stopped these ants once and for all. That said, I still have problems with ants if I don't catch the larvae when they exit and take ~2 weeks to hatch into flies to start the cycle all over again.

    • @mjk591
      @mjk591 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You apply grease at the bottom of the container or apply some insect killer powder with mustard oil to the legs of the container.this way when the ants come they cannot go all the way in 👍

    Nice video! The Black Soldier doesn't eat carbons or bones or seeds,rines so I would advise you do feed them those. The goal of the game is to regenerate in the fastest time! Go to my videos to get some information on breeding the species and harvest the frass! Iam the Black Soldier Fly Man! My Larvae eat over 1 ton of food scapes every 3 weeks! I really like your holistic approach to this. I live in the Texas Hill Country and coons and possums would have this torn up in no time. How do you protect your set up from these critters?

    • @LTG-IV
      @LTG-IV  ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't spend much time worrying about them since I keep bricks on top of the lid that keep them from getting in. So far, so good. You may be interested in reading the "Mistakes were made" section of my Black Soldier Fly article → LTG.FYI/LOTF-Mistakes
