We went 16 days w/o power running a 9500 watt Briggs and Stratton after Hurricane Ike here in Houston. Ran the entire house except central AC, we used a window unit in master bedroom. Unit was tied into my service panel and back fed the house till utility power was restored. Biggest challenge was finding gasoline, I had a weeks worth ahead of the storm and had to get out and hunt for it after that. Learned my lesson and modified that unit to run on natural gas and adapted a quick disconnect gas line and still back fed into service. 3 years ago had a 22KW Honeywell unit installed with auto transfer switch that runs on natural gas, life is good now. last big hurricane in Brunswick Ga. I was the ONLY guy on my street with power, food , water , HOT! water, Internet ,direct TV, air conditioning...after 2 days of a 2 week outage ..my neighbors got mad because I wouldn't let them run cords to my electrical set up!. after a week they started getting nasty and I had one guy trying to steal one of my generators. Not happening... its in a locked Generac shell (empty case without generator we had for a display)I got from work for a buck. He left leaking pretty good because I let my dog chopper out to say hello. If you guys dont think your nice neighbors wouldnt come after you..your wrong. I have a gated locked yard with a dog named chopper and they STILL tried it! So now I went quiet.. I soundproofed my generator shed with proper venting..my exhaust goes UNDERGROUND to a large 2 ft diameter concrete driveway drain thats open at the end 12 ft away..you cant hear it at all running. all my windows now have blackout curtains installed. Those who think people are nice quiet creatures are WRONG, Humans are dangerous panicky animals that will KILL you to survive without a thought. I had to make a show of weapons at the end to keep people away until the power came on after 18 days....only 18 DAYS and they became a problem. Prepare now or your toast later. Oh and I added a 300 watt solar system charging (4) 6 volt golf cart batteries with a thousand watt inverter and a controller. This will run my refrigeration at night now without a generator for 12 hours...go silent have weapons and TRAINING to stay alive . If you're liberal pacifist, or a candy ass and unwilling to protect yourself, BUG OUT! Save the county the trouble of cleaning up your remains.
@@DS..69 I have champion model 100222 and a Generac GP 3300..just added AIPower 2300 inverter. I sell generators...the trick is to run them out of fuel and switch to the other generator. This allows them to cool off and you can refuel and also spread the load across 2 gens instead of one. I also change oil with mobile one full synthetic every 50 hours instead of 100. The inverter will be used at night to run my 10000 BTU window air conditioner.

I kept having to walk down the driveway to the generator to make sure it was still running. In fact, the most annoying noise coming from the set-up is a high-pitched chirping coming from the pressure regulator on the propane line. I suppose it's possible my other propane-powered generator's pressure regulator is making the same noise, but the generator itself is so loud I've never noticed it. Build quality so far is excellent. My only nit is the service panel is a little tricky to remove. I feel like I might break off one of the plastic tabs when bending it back. I probably just need to work out the technique, so will not hold it against Champion.Next week I intend to fully load the unit to charge a large battery pack and will update this review if there's any problem (3000W continuous load vs a rated 3100W capacity while using propane). Absent any trouble there, I'm 100% pleased with this purchase.

And that is why a battery generator is a better idea. No deadly fumes. No excess heat. And you can use it indoors so shorter extension cords. Then run a gas generator outside for a couple hours while recharging. And stay next to the generator while it is running so you can enforce safety rules. Like the ones just listed.
If you are connecting a single device to a single generator do not ground the generator. It is actually safer to only allow the electricity to be on the hot and neutral lines. If you ground the generator now you can get electrocuted between the hot and ground. If it was not grounded that would not be possible. If the device you are powering is connected to anything other than the generator then yes the generator may need to be grounded plus you need to add gfi protection.
About lending a power feed to a neighbour...They will be using it raw(no transfer switch/ inlet power)...They could very well back feed the utility and you would be legally liable for damages/personal injuries or death...Not the time to be a nice guy / hero....Great informative video..Thanks !
My two quality 2200 watt inverters have served me well during long outages, basically, whisper quiet .. and running about 10 hours on a gallon. I keep a wireless thermometer in fridge and freezer with auto-alarm when the temp inside reaches set level .. indicating need to start generator again if it is taking a break. This way I can actually keep food cold and safe using only a gallon per day of fuel. I also have a small 900 watt induction hotplate and a tiny 600 watt microwave .. I feed the house with 10 gauge cord split to three 12 gauge feeding fridge, floor lamps and fan and electronics including TV and DVD player, router-modem. As a cooling system of last resort, I have a tiny Chico floor AC unit that will cool one room using leas than 2000 watts. I keep enough ethanol free stabilized fuel on hand for a couple of weeks of off grid power rotating it in and out of inventory. (20 gallons) I have extra spark plugs and synthetic oil on hand. During recent 19 hour outage we had movie night with popcorn on inverter after a generator cooked supper. Not bad for 2200 watts.

We bought a $120 12 volt inverter from Harbor Freight, 2000 watt 4000 peak. We use it on a Prius parked in the back yard . The Prius automatically starts when the battery gets low . One tank will last a week. Move the extension cord around, minimize opening refrigerator . 2000 watts is enough to be comfortable. You just cant do everything at the same time.
When I did that on my 2005 prius I looked up the 12v inverter that then Prius had. It was 100 amps. So at 12v that is 1200 watts. I decided I did not want to burn that out so I kept my load below 800 watts. Now I have a Nissan Leaf. Same idea with 12v to 120v inverter mainly just for my fridge and Cellphone which use 2kwh a day. So the 24kwh battery can give me a week and still have 20 miles of range to drive to the closest working charger to charge back up. If the power outage is longer than 7 days and larger than 20 miles I go dark. Which wouldn’t happen with the prius.

I'm glad I got a duel fuel generator. It's slightly bigger than I need, but that should do good since I'm planning on running primarily on LP. Man there's alot to learn about generators!

Generator sizing: you missed that a generator is most efficient between 50-80% load. A smaller generator running flat out will actually use more fuel than a larger generator running at half capacity. So no getting the smallest generator you can is not necessarily the most efficient use of your limited fuel. You would be better off using a larger generator intermittently to charge up some batteries (LiFePO4 recommend for power density,charge rate, cycle count and more) and then use those on an pure sine inverter to run your fridge/fan/etc. smaller loads where the generator would be mostly idle. A fridge pulls iirc around 200w but for a long time. That is a long time to keep your generator idling using more fuel to keep the rpms in the correct range than actually doing any real work.
to a degree they will dont go over what you need in power ..use the smallest one you can use and just run things in a smart way. Friges only need to run every 8 hours to keep cold if you keep the door shut..things like that. what good is a 12000 watt gen out of gas? they use 5 gals every 8 hours when a 3500 watt will run 12 hours on 2 or 3 gals
I did agree. Gas engines are most energy efficient running full throttle. I wouldn't size a generator to run full throttle that being said. Invertor generators are the most fuel efficient
Actually they run at the same speed at around 3500 rpm. Now that said, you use more gas with more load like a car going uphill. The bigger the motor the more gas you use. That gas costs a lot, ,to buy, to store, and to keep enough on hand. 3500 watt generator uses 50% less gas than a 5500 watt generator
Zanthum , Yep. True as you stated. Most people don't know, they guess... almost always ending up with undersized and fragile systems. Also, they forget the FIRST thing about generator safety, the simple detector which would have saved the whole family and pets.
I have two backup generators. One is an old Onan 4kw 1800rpm RV genset from the 1980s. I converted it to natural gas and is in a sound enclosure. It's very quiet and there's no electronics to fail. 100% mechanical right down to the breaker point ignition. It's big and heavy. The other is the HFT Predator 3500 inverter. It's very quiet too and I left it set up for gasoline. I keep a running log and start it at least once a month + use fuel stabilizer. No problems with bad fuel like this. Got it super cheap as an open box returned that ran terrible. Fixed the exhaust restriction and good as new. I like quiet generators and recommend spending the extra for an enclosed unit unless your neighbors are far away.

Just a couple good tips you might want to add. 1The Killawatt from Harbor Freight $30 will read voltage,amps,frequency and watts used by an appliance. 2 an inverter generator uses much less fuel than a standard generator because it idles with no load instead of wide open all the time. 3 Add a Micro Air soft start to your AC unit. Starting current is reduced on mine from 110 amps to 35 amps initial surge. Cost about $350. But allows a smaller 220v gen to run the AC.
Running a portable generator on gasoline during a hurricane power outage is almost senseless. That is unless you plan on storing at least 50 to 75 gallons of gasoline or more. Most people don't realize or remember when you're without power in your home chances are the local gas stations are also out of power. Electricity is needed to pump the gasoline from their holding tanks. No electricity means no gasoline.... That's why I say propane is the only way to go. I have a 7K inverter generator that'll be fed by a 100 gallon propane tank. This is easily good for five days of running my generator 24/7.
Lots of gr8 info. I put up a tarp on liv. rm. side of the hallway so I don't cool the whole house and set a.c. just enough to get rid of humidity. Since I have gas for cooking water htg and furnace, I don't need all that much for the house, the fridge being the largest.
When I bought my generator it was just a little 2800 watt Yamaha inverter.I converted to propane from the company that was call us carburation,now it's called motor snorkel I think. At least with their kit they said there is no loss in wattage when running on propane. The generator only runs on propane even took the fuel tank off I have not had any problem running it at it's rated 2500 watts

If you want to run propane get a Champion Dual fuel generator. I have a 10k generator and a 3500-watt inverter both are dual fuel and they are outstanding. So as a fairly new prepper I was going to get a small freezer and fill but thought Oh if power goes out I would have problems so started looking into a generator. Finally ditched the freezer idea and decided to stock up on foods that don't need refrigeration/freezing. Will buy a gas grill instead with several propane tanks and a solar generator. I have been through power outages here in Alabama and prior in Maryland. I have a small backup heater and fireplace plus battery operated fan and radio. Water heater holds heat for a while so not too concerned about it. As long as I can cook beans and rice, make coffee and keep warm or some air moving I think I'm fine. Working on water now.

Got an 1.2 kw generator, just for lights, computers and electric doors. It feeds the fridge during the night (the fridge can survive 24 hours without power). Wood stove for the heating. Yes it doesn’t provide the full comfort as usual, but it’s only for a couple of days a year, sometimes less. The generator works 10 hours on full load with a gallon… less expensive generator, less gasoline to store, less maintenance, less noise…

Great information. Generators are great but very dangerous. Tons of house fires(and co2 poisonings) happen every year. Propane is good but i find it harder to find in a emergency than gas. It also doesnt allow for as much power
I think. Could be wrong... He's thinking more along the lines of using a "big" tank mostly. 250 gal or larger. I know he mentioned the grill sized tanks and that they were safer and easier to obtain in a disaster. But if you could hook to a large tank and ration it'd be peaceful thoughts.

Generally great information with a few errors - much of the Caribbean is 110v but North America is always 120/240v, a standard 12 gauge extension cord is fine - that's bigger than most house wiring and will run any appliance up to 20 amps. A Honda 5000 watt generator needs oil changes every 300 hours, not 24. Some well pumps are three phase and won't run on most home generators. No mention was made of running an oil or gas forced air furnace in winter - check the amperage of your fan motor. The risky part about illegally connecting to a dryer outlet without a transfer switch included "turn off every single breaker", well as soon as you turn off the dryer breaker nothing in the house will get power. The main panel master switch or breaker MUST stay off and the dryer breaker needs to be on, then turn on only the breakers you need to power.
I posted that as well and also that buy shutting off the gas while running, us the choke to keep it running until it runs on full choke shutting off with no gas in the carb. No ethanol gas in the carb to do any damage.

They rented Generac Generators 4,500 watt on up to 12,000 watt gas generators! The 12,000 watt has an oil filter but the smaller ones only a oil pumps of sorts. These we changed the oil (synthetic oil) every 200 hours for heavy duty dirty conditions and 300 hours for light duty. In our experience with different name brand generators and until 1990, Honda Generators were durable but , after that they were, lets say not! They cost a third more, yet they needed to be overhauled more often! This was years ago, so I called my old place of work and found out that they are using Champion Generators now! Just some insight that just like Briggs and Stratton that in 1970 Brunswick bought it! those very reliable one and two cylinder engines were not made anymore. Instead they are now throw away engines are what they are known for. Honda is not what it once was, It is durable, but for the added price not.

I've not read how it works but obviously if it has a little contraption connected to the Ground pin and the Hot pin then a current trickle through to Ground could hold some circuit closed but if the Ground pin becomes Open (ungrounded) the contraption maybe releases some spring with a little pawl, and that pops open the live circuit (and you have to push to reset). I'm just guessing how it would work. I've wondered whether Ontario Hydro One solidly ground any normally-live wire they're working on to blow a fuse or pop a breaker somewhere if it gets energized during work (I would always have the disconnect switch off of course if I wired a feed to the fusebox but I prefer multiple safety backups).

Excellent video! I have a question. I have a 1440 running watt's on propane, I can run a 12000 BTU window A C and a portable fridge/freezer cooler and TV. When the A C unit starts the compressor the generator bogs for a few seconds and clears right up. Should I get a parallel kit and another 1440 watt generator? Even with out the TV and fridge it still bogs for a few seconds, the AC uses 10.5 amps.

Yeah, I know that the post below is a bit long winded and even cut off the ending. The bottom line is change the oil at the recommended interval, use brand name oils and, for me, I ALWAYS change the oil regardless of when it was changed last or whether or not it's been used since, EVERY spring AND fall to prevent acid buildup in the oil from moisture mixing with sulfur in the oil. One thing that I would like to agree with and stress is your suggestion of proper sizing for the need. After I got the bigger Troy Bilt referenced below, I expected and noticed the increased fuel cost. As mentioned below, my wife has health issues that require A/C during hot times. At night when we only run the window A/C in the summer, it didn't seem prudent to run that hulking 7000 watt behemoth for a 5 amp window unit so I went out and bought a 10 amp, (1100 watt), Champion unit just for the A/C. My neighbors are few and far between but I'm sure they would appreciate the whisper quiet hum of a little toy rather than the ongoing riot in the garage. Well, Champion gets the loser participation trophy in my book. The bigger units may be fine. I've seen good things about them here but that little 80 cc pocket sized engine really chickens out at half load. I gave it to my son 3 counties over and told him to only use it for one light, one fan, the cable box and one LED TV set. I'll admit that under that load, the one gallon gas tank will last 24 hours but anything more will stall it.

The small Honda Inverter Generators are garbage. Plastic camshaft with a rubber timing belt. Yamaha Inverter generators have a steel camshaft with push rods and are one of the best built small generators on the market. Honda cheapened the engines and put the homeowner version in their small generators instead of the old style commercial quality version. I usually buy Honda or Robin Subaru Engines but Yamaha got my buisness for the 2000 watt inverter generator. Been running good for almost 10 years. Always starts with PRI-G fuel stabilizer.
@Karl Schubert it just depends on how each model is made. Honda still makes good generators in the larger sized. Even the Harbor Freight generators are OK for the money. When you buy a Honda you expect more for your money. I would get a parts break down of any generator and look up the part numbers for the camshaft and make sure it is steel and not plastic. Even Briggs and Stratton uses plastic camshafts in some of their engines that not necessarily bad but a rubber timing belt is a joke especially since it runs in oil.

Personally I have a 4.5kw diesel generator that consumes less than half the fuel of an equivalent petrol/gasoline generator and delivers a more stable voltage thanks to diesel engines higher torque value so less inclined to bog down with inductive loads
Nothing beats diesel, and there are small units that can be installed on an RV, or whatever, and they really kick ass. Just my (well informed) opinion tho.

We went 16 days w/o power running a 9500 watt Briggs and Stratton after Hurricane Ike here in Houston. Ran the entire house except central AC, we used a window unit in master bedroom. Unit was tied into my service panel and back fed the house till utility power was restored. Biggest challenge was finding gasoline, I had a weeks worth ahead of the storm and had to get out and hunt for it after that. Learned my lesson and modified that unit to run on natural gas and adapted a quick disconnect gas line and still back fed into service. 3 years ago had a 22KW Honeywell unit installed with auto transfer switch that runs on natural gas, life is good now. I was the ONLY guy on my street with power, food , water , HOT! water, Internet ,direct TV, air conditioning...after 2 days of a 2 week outage ..my neighbors got mad because I wouldn't let them run cords to my electrical set up!. after a week they started getting nasty and I had one guy trying to steal one of my generators. Not happening... its in a locked Generac shell (empty case without generator we had for a display)I got from work for a buck. He left leaking pretty good because I let my dog chopper out to say hello. If you guys dont think your nice neighbors wouldnt come after you..your wrong. I have a gated locked yard with a dog named chopper and they STILL tried it! So now I went quiet.. I soundproofed my generator shed with proper venting..my exhaust goes UNDERGROUND to a large 2 ft diameter concrete driveway drain thats open at the end 12 ft away..you cant hear it at all running. all my windows now have blackout curtains installed. Those who think people are nice quiet creatures are WRONG, Humans are dangerous panicky animals that will KILL you to survive without a thought. I had to make a show of weapons at the end to keep people away until the power came on after 18 days....only 18 DAYS and they became a problem. Prepare now or your toast later. Oh and I added a 300 watt solar system charging (4) 6 volt golf cart batteries with a thousand watt inverter and a controller. This will run my refrigeration at night now without a generator for 12 hours...go silent have weapons and TRAINING to stay alive . If you're liberal pacifist, or a candy ass and unwilling to protect yourself, BUG OUT! Save the county the trouble of cleaning up your remains.

@@DS..69 I have champion model 100222 and a Generac GP 3300..just added AIPower 2300 inverter. I sell generators...the trick is to run them out of fuel and switch to the other generator. This allows them to cool off and you can refuel and also spread the load across 2 gens instead of one. I also change oil with mobile one full synthetic every 50 hours instead of 100. The inverter will be used at night to run my 10000 BTU window air conditioner.

I kept having to walk down the driveway to the generator to make sure it was still running. In fact, the most annoying noise coming from the set-up is a high-pitched chirping coming from the pressure regulator on the propane line. I suppose it's possible my other propane-powered generator's pressure regulator is making the same noise, but the generator itself is so loud I've never noticed it. Build quality so far is excellent. My only nit is the service panel is a little tricky to remove. I feel like I might break off one of the plastic tabs when bending it back. I probably just need to work out the technique, so will not hold it against Champion.Next week I intend to fully load the unit to charge a large battery pack and will update this review if there's any problem (3000W continuous load vs a rated 3100W capacity while using propane). Absent any trouble there, I'm 100% pleased with this purchase.

If you are connecting a single device to a single generator do not ground the generator. It is actually safer to only allow the electricity to be on the hot and neutral lines. If you ground the generator now you can get electrocuted between the hot and ground. If it was not grounded that would not be possible.
If the device you are powering is connected to anything other than the generator then yes the generator may need to be grounded plus you need to add gfi protection.
About lending a power feed to a neighbour...They will be using it raw(no transfer switch/ inlet power)...They could very well back feed the utility and you would be legally liable for damages/personal injuries or death...Not the time to be a nice guy / hero....Great informative video..Thanks !
My two quality 2200 watt inverters have served me well during long outages, basically, whisper quiet .. and running about 10 hours on a gallon. I keep a wireless thermometer in fridge and freezer with auto-alarm when the temp inside reaches set level .. indicating need to start generator again if it is taking a break. This way I can actually keep food cold and safe using only a gallon per day of fuel. I also have a small 900 watt induction hotplate and a tiny 600 watt microwave .. I feed the house with 10 gauge cord split to three 12 gauge feeding fridge, floor lamps and fan and electronics including TV and DVD player, router-modem. As a cooling system of last resort, I have a tiny Chico floor AC unit that will cool one room using leas than 2000 watts. I keep enough ethanol free stabilized fuel on hand for a couple of weeks of off grid power rotating it in and out of inventory. (20 gallons) I have extra spark plugs and synthetic oil on hand. During recent 19 hour outage we had movie night with popcorn on inverter after a generator cooked supper. Not bad for 2200 watts.
I keep a bunch of Gatorade bottles with clean water in the freezer. Works as an ice pack and is drinking water if it melts when camping.

We bought a $120 12 volt inverter from Harbor Freight, 2000 watt 4000 peak. We use it on a Prius parked in the back yard . The Prius automatically starts when the battery gets low . One tank will last a week. Move the extension cord around, minimize opening refrigerator . 2000 watts is enough to be comfortable. You just cant do everything at the same time.
When I did that on my 2005 prius I looked up the 12v inverter that then Prius had. It was 100 amps. So at 12v that is 1200 watts. I decided I did not want to burn that out so I kept my load below 800 watts.
Now I have a Nissan Leaf. Same idea with 12v to 120v inverter mainly just for my fridge and Cellphone which use 2kwh a day. So the 24kwh battery can give me a week and still have 20 miles of range to drive to the closest working charger to charge back up.
If the power outage is longer than 7 days and larger than 20 miles I go dark. Which wouldn’t happen with the prius.

Generator sizing: you missed that a generator is most efficient between 50-80% load. A smaller generator running flat out will actually use more fuel than a larger generator running at half capacity. So no getting the smallest generator you can is not necessarily the most efficient use of your limited fuel.
You would be better off using a larger generator intermittently to charge up some batteries (LiFePO4 recommend for power density,charge rate, cycle count and more) and then use those on an pure sine inverter to run your fridge/fan/etc. smaller loads where the generator would be mostly idle. A fridge pulls iirc around 200w but for a long time. That is a long time to keep your generator idling using more fuel to keep the rpms in the correct range than actually doing any real work.

Friges only need to run every 8 hours to keep cold if you keep the door shut..things like that. what good is a 12000 watt gen out of gas? they use 5 gals every 8 hours when a 3500 watt will run 12 hours on 2 or 3 gals
I did agree. Gas engines are most energy efficient running full throttle. I wouldn't size a generator to run full throttle that being said. Invertor generators are the most fuel efficient
Actually they run at the same speed at around 3500 rpm. Now that said, you use more gas with more load like a car going uphill. The bigger the motor the more gas you use. That gas costs a lot, ,to buy, to store, and to keep enough on hand. 3500 watt generator uses 50% less gas than a 5500 watt generator

I have two backup generators. One is an old Onan 4kw 1800rpm RV genset from the 1980s. I converted it to natural gas and is in a sound enclosure. It's very quiet and there's no electronics to fail. 100% mechanical right down to the breaker point ignition. It's big and heavy. The other is the HFT Predator 3500 inverter. It's very quiet too and I left it set up for gasoline. I keep a running log and start it at least once a month + use fuel stabilizer. No problems with bad fuel like this. Got it super cheap as an open box returned that ran terrible. Fixed the exhaust restriction and good as new. I like quiet generators and recommend spending the extra for an enclosed unit unless your neighbors are far away.

Just a couple good tips you might want to add. 1The Killawatt from Harbor Freight $30 will read voltage,amps,frequency and watts used by an appliance. 2 an inverter generator uses much less fuel than a standard generator because it idles with no load instead of wide open all the time. 3 Add a Micro Air soft start to your AC unit. Starting current is reduced on mine from 110 amps to 35 amps initial surge. Cost about $350. But allows a smaller 220v gen to run the AC.

Running a portable generator on gasoline during a hurricane power outage is almost senseless. That is unless you plan on storing at least 50 to 75 gallons of gasoline or more. Most people don't realize or remember when you're without power in your home chances are the local gas stations are also out of power. Electricity is needed to pump the gasoline from their holding tanks. No electricity means no gasoline.... That's why I say propane is the only way to go. I have a 7K inverter generator that'll be fed by a 100 gallon propane tank. This is easily good for five days of running my generator 24/7.

set a.c. just enough to get rid of humidity. Since I have gas for cooking water htg and furnace, I
don't need all that much for the house, the fridge being the largest.
When I bought my generator it was just a little 2800 watt Yamaha inverter.I converted to propane from the company that was call us carburation,now it's called motor snorkel I think. At least with their kit they said there is no loss in wattage when running on propane. The generator only runs on propane even took the fuel tank off I have not had any problem running it at it's rated 2500 watts

If you want to run propane get a Champion Dual fuel generator. I have a 10k generator and a 3500-watt inverter both are dual fuel and they are outstanding. So as a fairly new prepper I was going to get a small freezer and fill but thought Oh if power goes out I would have problems so started looking into a generator. Finally ditched the freezer idea and decided to stock up on foods that don't need refrigeration/freezing. Will buy a gas grill instead with several propane tanks and a solar generator. I have been through power outages here in Alabama and prior in Maryland. I have a small backup heater and fireplace plus battery operated fan and radio. Water heater holds heat for a while so not too concerned about it. As long as I can cook beans and rice, make coffee and keep warm or some air moving I think I'm fine. Working on water now.

Ethanol free fuel is a must for all small engines.
Or any gasoline engine older than 1997. My 1993 Ford Escort leaked fuel from rubber hoses wrecked by ethanol. Power reduction and mpg reduction, compared to 100% gas.

A large number of gas stations in my area have gone back to offering ethanol free so I can even go back to running it regularly in my vehicles which increases my fuel mileage too.

Read your instructions the first time you run a brand new generator bought brand new. They say change oil at 1 hour of used to get rid of any burrs so it won’t seize you engine. Burrs are tiny metal particles that when oil is added the burrs get into the oil. That why you find bunch of brand new generator return to Lowe’s and Home Depot after a storm because the engines were seized. And customer says it was no good all because the customer was 2 stupid to read the owner manual. And it a good idea to get a magnet oil stick for the generator. To help to catch metal burrs.

I think. Could be wrong... He's thinking more along the lines of using a "big" tank mostly. 250 gal or larger. I know he mentioned the grill sized tanks and that they were safer and easier to obtain in a disaster. But if you could hook to a large tank and ration it'd be peaceful thoughts.

Generally great information with a few errors - much of the Caribbean is 110v but North America is always 120/240v, a standard 12 gauge extension cord is fine - that's bigger than most house wiring and will run any appliance up to 20 amps. A Honda 5000 watt generator needs oil changes every 300 hours, not 24. Some well pumps are three phase and won't run on most home generators. No mention was made of running an oil or gas forced air furnace in winter - check the amperage of your fan motor. The risky part about illegally connecting to a dryer outlet without a transfer switch included "turn off every single breaker", well as soon as you turn off the dryer breaker nothing in the house will get power. The main panel master switch or breaker MUST stay off and the dryer breaker needs to be on, then turn on only the breakers you need to power.
I posted that as well and also that buy shutting off the gas while running, us the choke to keep it running until it runs on full choke shutting off with no gas in the carb. No ethanol gas in the carb to do any damage.

They rented Generac Generators 4,500 watt on up to 12,000 watt gas generators! The 12,000 watt has an oil filter but the smaller ones only a oil pumps of sorts. These we changed the oil (synthetic oil) every 200 hours for heavy duty dirty conditions and 300 hours for light duty. In our experience with different name brand generators and until 1990, Honda Generators were durable but , after that they were, lets say not! They cost a third more, yet they needed to be overhauled more often! This was years ago, so I called my old place of work and found out that they are using Champion Generators now! Just some insight that just like Briggs and Stratton that in 1970 Brunswick bought it! those very reliable one and two cylinder engines were not made anymore. Instead they are now throw away engines are what they are known for. Honda is not what it once was, It is durable, but for the added price not.

I have Canadian Tire Champion generator on Special but I also have Canadian Tire camouflage carpet slippers on Special for the bloke who's much into survival and heavy weaponry but yet enjoys comfort in a really nice carpet slipper. I think the GFCI ensures that the Ground pin is grounded rather than a short-circuit check. I've not read how it works but obviously if it has a little contraption connected to the Ground pin and the Hot pin then a current trickle through to Ground could hold some circuit closed but if the Ground pin becomes Open (ungrounded) the contraption maybe releases some spring with a little pawl, and that pops open the live circuit (and you have to push to reset). I'm just guessing how it would work. I've wondered whether Ontario Hydro One solidly ground any normally-live wire they're working on to blow a fuse or pop a breaker somewhere if it gets energized during work (I would always have the disconnect switch off of course if I wired a feed to the fusebox but I prefer multiple safety backups).

My 20kw whole house generator is diesel, which he skipped completely. I studied generators for almost a year before I invested and It is the most ideal solution. It burns at about half a gallon an hour, is liquid cooled and can run 24/7 as long as I have fuel. I ran it non-stop for 5 days after a hurricane. I can also store diesel safer (When I need to) than gas and I don't have to call out and wait for a truck come by to refill propane tanks.

I also use uninterruptible power supplies to supplement power needs. While the generator is running they charge up, and then when you shut it off you still have battery supply for many small appliances. I mainly use 1,500 VA UPS on many appliances, they can run lights and charge cell phones for hours, and can even run a microwave or a coffee pot once or twice a charge. they're also very good at smoothing and conditioning dirty power from a generator.
Uninterruptible power supplies are fairly expensive for what they are, but I usually pick them up when I see them on a sale.

Excellent video! I have a question. I have a 1440 running watt's on propane, I can run a 12000 BTU window A C and a portable fridge/freezer cooler and TV. When the A C unit starts the compressor the generator bogs for a few seconds and clears right up. Should I get a parallel kit and another 1440 watt generator? Even with out the TV and fridge it still bogs for a few seconds, the AC uses 10.5 amps.

You missed one important point. Make sure the generator is GROUNDED. Most electronics will not run if the power source is not grounded properly.

Yeah, I know that the post below is a bit long winded and even cut off the ending. The bottom line is change the oil at the recommended interval, use brand name oils and, for me, I ALWAYS change the oil regardless of when it was changed last or whether or not it's been used since, EVERY spring AND fall to prevent acid buildup in the oil from moisture mixing with sulfur in the oil.
One thing that I would like to agree with and stress is your suggestion of proper sizing for the need. After I got the bigger Troy Bilt referenced below, I expected and noticed the increased fuel cost. As mentioned below, my wife has health issues that require A/C during hot times. At night when we only run the window A/C in the summer, it didn't seem prudent to run that hulking 7000 watt behemoth for a 5 amp window unit so I went out and bought a 10 amp, (1100 watt), Champion unit just for the A/C. My neighbors are few and far between but I'm sure they would appreciate the whisper quiet hum of a little toy rather than the ongoing riot in the garage. Well, Champion gets the loser participation trophy in my book. The bigger units may be fine. I've seen good things about them here but that little 80 cc pocket sized engine really chickens out at half load. I gave it to my son 3 counties over and told him to only use it for one light, one fan, the cable box and one LED TV set. I'll admit that under that load, the one gallon gas tank will last 24 hours but anything more will stall it.

The small Honda Inverter Generators are garbage. Plastic camshaft with a rubber timing belt. Yamaha Inverter generators have a steel camshaft with push rods and are one of the best built small generators on the market. Honda cheapened the engines and put the homeowner version in their small generators instead of the old style commercial quality version. I usually buy Honda or Robin Subaru Engines but Yamaha got my buisness for the 2000 watt inverter generator. Been running good for almost 10 years. Always starts with PRI-G fuel stabilizer.
@Karl Schubert it just depends on how each model is made. Honda still makes good generators in the larger sized. Even the Harbor Freight generators are OK for the money. When you buy a Honda you expect more for your money. I would get a parts break down of any generator and look up the part numbers for the camshaft and make sure it is steel and not plastic. Even Briggs and Stratton uses plastic camshafts in some of their engines that not necessarily bad but a rubber timing belt is a joke especially since it runs in oil.

I run my gen out of gas and then run it on propane for 10 minutes to clear out the remaining gas in the carb.

I prefer propane for large generators over diesel. The diesel fuel requires maintenance. For small generators, either ethanol free gas or propane.

Personally I have a 4.5kw diesel generator that consumes less than half the fuel of an equivalent petrol/gasoline generator and delivers a more stable voltage thanks to diesel engines higher torque value so less inclined to bog down with inductive loads
