  • All-I vs IPB File Compression | Canon EOS R
    A comparison with both compression file types that the Canon EOS R uses. ALL-I vs IPB. Which one is better for your project and what are they actually doing inside of the camera. Can you see the difference?
    Keep in mind when using IPB, your software will have to unpack all the information before it can use which might take longer with editing and when you make new edits to the existing footage. I myself use ALL-I all the time at the moment even though it takes up more space.
    I failed to mention, but there is also another compression that is available...
    IPB - (Light)
    Only selectable when the movie recording format is set to [MP4]. The movie is recorded at bit rate lower than with IPB (standard) resulting in a smaller file size and compatibility with a larger range of playback systems. Of the three methods available, this method allows the longest total possible movie shooting time on a card of a given capacity.
    Via Canon.com, "In conclusion, if you need the smaller file sizes for the continuous recordings like interviews, concerts, events function or wedding etc, IPB compression is more suitable.
    In case you are shooting the jobs like TV commercials, music videos, short films or subjects with erratic movement (such as smoky scene or waves) etc which the quality is the top concern and the file size is not a big issue. Choose ALL-I compression for the highest quality. And also, the advantages of ALL-I also include the fewer computers processing power which results in smoother playback and faster editing."

    Just researching this subject now with the upcoming Canon R7. Seems like very few of the reviewers touched upon the fact that it is a compressed 4k60 we are talking about. The manufacturers are so eager to sell 4k60 that they leave out information about compression. In my opinion such things should clearly be differentiated in the specs and the potential customers informed properly. Some of the footage i've seen makes IPB seem soft and dull and when All-I gets activated it pops back into life. Those who say they don't see any difference in the footage must either have bad eyes or a bad monitor.

    Good front discussion between the two but I think you graded the two clips differently so the comparison is not very meaningful....the all-I clips looks brighter than ipb, which would only take a few adjustments in the grading process to make them identical.

      Most cameras have factory settings that lock rates into camera, so just check out the specs before you purchase. Different camera companies will have different types of compressions. Higher end cameras will give you that option.

    Interesting. I’m shooting some educational type videos and the 4K ALLi is crashing my computer. But I noticed that, at least on my OES R, the 4K IPB spits roughly the same file sizes as 1080 ALLi. And my computer handles the 1080 with ease. Hmmm. Given the final product doesn’t need to be jaw dropping cinema quality... might have a go at recording some 4K IPB and play around with it.
    Heck, might even do the unthinkable and shoot it in (dun dun duunnnn) a canned picture style instead of log haha 🤷🏼‍♂️

  • @Dstonephoto
    @Dstonephoto 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    On the face of it all IPB seems as if its sole purpose is to purposely cripple video footage or appease the peasants too cheap to deal with an additional 200-300 mbps of data. It’s more computationally intensive in capture and more taxing on the editing front. A major WTF theory . Would be interesting to see what kind of a difference we would see when throwing an Atomos into the mix. The differences were pretty clear between the two. And these were relatively static shots. Once we introduce motion into the mix, I would assume the differences become even more pronounced. However… there’s arguments to be made that IPB could actually render better and smoother motion , as the nature of the algorithm could fix anomalies of stuttering motion whereas all-I is just rendering the frame. Time to google this, this could make for an compelling (the only?) benefit IPB offers over all-i or MJPEG.

  • @yizhakshachar

    I didn't see any different, I think that in the compare you did, you should of use moving human faces. It is essential for event photographer to see that different with human filming. You should do this compare indoor with close objects to the camera, like your furniture and yourself. And yes, I did give you a LIKE.

    There is no quality difference between IPB and All-I. It's a myth, a misnomer, an assumption people make because we're so used to bigger files equaling higher quality. Think of IPB like those old school .ZIP files. If you take some text documents, or photos, or videos and compress them in a ZIP folder, then unzip them, do you lose any data from the files? No, no you don't, and it's the same with IPB. However, IPB is more processor intensive on both ends, in the camera and on your computer.
