What did you go to and why did you not like it? Also, can ai ask - the only time I’ve had the opportunity to try a 55-02, I remember it sounding very “dark”. Was that because didn’t mess with tones enough or is that pretty true of their character?
@@peadookie I found the preamp to be pretty hot, and not allow a ton of ‘air’ between the notes. Very strong preamp. That said, I play direct exclusively and can assume that if you play into a live signal chain you’ll have a better experience. Still a great system. Being able to pick a variety of EQ points (on the pot) that the mid knob boosts or cuts is great. I play an MTD now with a passive setup and MM-J Bartolini pickups. Only preamp I’d go-to from here would be the John East Uni-Pre.
Great review with great recording allowing us to really appreciate the instrument. And finally and review without the guy talking 70% of the time!! Just bass!

I recently installed a MM pickup on a P J Bass. I put it kind of where the J pickup was. I did not like the way it sounded there. I moved it forward, touching the edge of the P Bass pickup. That is almost where the pickup is on a stingray bass . It created a hole that I had to fill,(not pretty} but the bass sounds really good now. If I had a Lakland I would do that same thing. Right now the Musicman pickup just does not sound that good.
