My old stomping grounds. Grew up in South Huntington before and after it was electrified to Huntington Station. Used to have to cross the Jamaica platform to switch to the diesel set. Even after they electrified it, for a while there was still a mix of diesels and electrics depending on if it continued to Port Jeff or terminated in Huntington. Those old cars were great - you could stand outside on the rear car deck with nothing but a set of chains protecting the back end. They also had a designated bar car where business men would drink, smoke, and play cards going home. Standing on the ground level platform in Huntington before it was electrified, it was both impressive and scary for a kid when those black and orange diesels would chug and charge around the curve heading eastbound over the 110 trestle without slowing, blowing through the Huntington stop on the way to Greenlawn.

First! And Finally! A video with some MU action as well as diesel power. Love the speed of that first M9 and nice intro, too.

I would say you were very prominent on my brain when I went out and did this today. I kind of wanted to do that anyway and today was just such a beautiful day I couldn’t resist

@@3985uprr Glad to know that I was thought of when you were railfanning. And yes, the weather looked beautiful. Nice shots of the various locations on the Port Jefferson branch. I enjoyed this video very much. It is added to my LIRR railfanning playlist here on TH-cam.

When I commuted daily in the 60's from NY to Cold Spring Harbor or Huntington I remember the Alco C420 diesels having a hard time getting enough traction to climb the hill between Cold Spring and Huntington on the long trains of P54s and P70s. It was definitely a struggle. It was all single track in those days just west of Cold Spring into Huntington and east.

What would happen when they failed to get the traction needed? Would helper locomotives arrive to give extra pushing/pulling power? Very interesting. Thanks for sharing.

@@ariesarethebest271 I’ve been told a following train would push them up that hill. Those Port Jeff trains back in the 60’s were crowded 17 car trains. Much heavier than today’s trains.

Oh wow, Robbins Lane is my local grade crossing! I go there all the time mainly to catch those Port Jefferson rush hour diesels all the time but unfortunately I may have to wait until next year soon because daylight is getting shorter unfortunately.

LIRR has many trains each way daily. I work in the big city of Atlanta GA where the commuter train is MARTA. MARTA's trains have no engineer as they are operated by computer with the operator who handles the door operations and in emergencies can drive the train. While the MARTA train system isn't as large as the MTA, it is being added onto as time comes upon with new stations going to added in the future.
