    Davin, seeing that Buick straight eight engine restored and in it's appropriate new home was great. That '51 Buick Super convertible is a treasure. I'm a convertible guy myself. I own a '12 Chrysler 200 Touring convertible. I'm learning about my car and have so far done front and rear disk brake reline and changed out the power steering fluid on my car.

    As a retired machinist and later engineer I would suggest checking your bearings for size in at least three places in case of out of roundness. Even if the block just been line bored or honed you can have hard spots in cast material that causes it to not machine properly.

    • @Hoaxer51
      @Hoaxer51 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I have a question for you, Davin used a bore micrometer and by the looks of it, it had three points of contact (at 3:32) for measuring. Wouldn’t that be checking in three locations all at once? He wasn’t using snap gauges and I understand using more locations when you’re using those.

    • @jzab
      @jzab 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@Hoaxer51 looking at when David is measuring the main bearings (6:18) there’s a pin in between the wheels and one opposite. I thinks these pins do the measuring and the wheels help with centring.

      @joshuagibson2520 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@Hoaxer51 indeed there are 3 measuring faces on the bore gage. That just gets you centered. What the fine gentleman means by check 3 places is rotate the gage to measure 3 different locations of the circle to get 3 different readings and verify there aren't any spots over or undersize. As he said, just because you machine or bore a circle doesn't mean it will for sure be "round" or a perfect circle. I hope that explains it.

    • @Hoaxer51
      @Hoaxer51 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@joshuagibson2520, What I saw at 3:32 looked like it just had the three contact points but as jzab pointed out at 6:18 I can see the single contact point so I understand why Vettekid said to check at three points. Thanks All for straightening this out for me, I saw one thing and I should have kept looking. I really enjoy these videos and there’s a lot to be learned here even from a short video.

    You don’t need to check your bearings before the crank is reground if it’s cut .010 U.S. you just buy .010 under bearings you do need to check each Clarence but the crank will be cut exactly .010 under no more no less checking bearing clearances is just to verify your bearing bores don’t have something funky going on

    Firstly love your channel, and it's great to watch you work. But with the rod vice I thought you'd have to have the rod and the cap clamped in there to prevent any twisting, what's your reasoning for just having the rod end clamped in there? Also, would you ever balance the rotating mass of a stock engine like this?

    How to check SBC oil clearance- fill with 5w30. Check hot oil pressure at idle. If less than 15psi, change oil out with 20w50. Recheck oil pressure at hot idle. If above 15psi, ship it. Lol

    Let me put something out there, I see you rocking the micrometer up and down. Assuming you are using the largest measurement, aren’t you taking a tipped measurement of the diameter? This would be larger a than a measurement taken with the instrument square to the diameter.

  • @thespicemelange.1

    I know you’re busy, but I noticed you torqued the main bearings out of torque sequence. Is that okay? I’m getting ready to measure my mains in a M117 (560SL) and I’m curious to know because it would be much easier to measure with the bore gauge out of torque sequence.

    GM specs closer oil clearance on those engines. Around 1.5 thou. Which for a standard engine is fine though use the high pressure,,,not high volume 350 pump which pumps 55psi V around 35psi for the original. Then use a synthetic oil.
    I use 1.8-2 thou on 7500 rpm 12-1 350 race engines with 15/50 synthetic with no issues. None of this 2.5-3 thou rubbish using mineral oil. Oil pump uses a lot of power and for a wet sump loads up the dissy gears big time.
