After 12 years of Tory misrule the UK still has some of the coldest/poorly insulated homes in Europe.
I rent and got free extra loft insulation but the landlord didn't agree with the free cavity wall insulation as it meant doing a bit of remedial decoration and contacting the tenant in the other flat. As he got no benefit it wasn't done and I'm left with higher heating bills.

I have an autobiography of Sybil Bannister, 'I Lived Under Hitler', about a British-born woman who ended up stranded in Germany for the duration of WWII. In it she remarked how much better insulated houses were in Germany than they were in Britain, in general, resulting in being cooler in summer and warmer in winter. So, it's evidently a long-standing failing of British housing design, not just to do with '12 years of Tory misrule', even though I largely concur that it has been indeed misrule, as you say. I know this to my cost myself, living in what is classified as a 'dormer/chalet bungalow', where the upper storey can get very cold in winter and very hot in summer.

@@christopherbentley7289 Not sure if this is true but under Thatcher she wanted all new houses built with double-glazing. The house builders fought tooth & nail to block it as they claimed it would make houses unaffordable. Utter nonsense of course.
For 12 years the Tories have known what the problem is but have underfunded all the schemes and tried to make Gas & Electric companies provide the insulation. They were less than enthusiastic because it meant less profit for them A) to provide it & B) lower energy usage = less profit.

@@zetectic7968 Hmmm! It all goes to show that Margaret Thatcher was rather more sensible than virtually all the current underwhelming crop of Tories. One almost feels nostalgic!
BTW, after my talk of well-designed housing in Germany, back in the Mid-1990s, as a mature undergraduate studying Geography with German, I worked on an archaeological dig in Osnabrück and was put up in a students' accommodation block which had been initially built as temporary but became permanent. It was essentially a glorified tin box that was bone-chillingly cold in winter and stiflingly hot in summer...and the summer I happened to be there was 1995 - only beaten in the Twentieth Century by the summer of 1976!

The trouble is we've already left the EU, water isn't running uphill and shit is pouring out to sea. Perhaps its a con to stop the French fishermen catching fish inside UK waters (which I believe was part of the Brexit deal) that the Tory Gov't didn't read...

Insulating renovations in EU (France, Germany etc) are massively subsidised by the tax departments using various schemes. Nobody needed to reduce the Vat rate on materials, as they cost close to nothing, it is the installations that represents most of the price. People on the continent have all got tax reductions for all insulation work (in france, dating back to the 80s! ). Bad faith from moggy again, counting on the fact that the UK people do no know how it works on the continent...

In The Netherlands the government has decided - not before time I might add - to change the VAT payable on energy from the standard 21 percent to the reduced rate of 9 percent. As of 1 July. Until the end of 2022. So by the time the temperatures are down again, the VAT goes up. Looks like they took a leaf from the tory handbook.
Anyway, last time I checked The Netherlands was still an EU member. So lowering the VAT on energy whilst being an EU member is possible and JRM is lying, again, in that bored and annoyed manner of speaking which by design gives the impression he really can't be bothered with all these nonsensical questions but he will explain one more time. I can't imagine anyone beyond his circle of friends at the Somerset country club voting for him. But apparently people do.
