Clarissa High I found out in Google images by typing small man with pencil then it showed in the searches cartoon and then it poped up and thats what brought me here to watch its videos. AHHHH MEMORIES!!!!!
you might not believe this, but i have the same story about this skit throughout my life memories of watching late night cartoon network i just found this today, what a moment of clarity
Oh my god I don't know how but I remember all of these sounds. From the crinkling of the tap, to the sound of the soil being molded in the egg carton. One by one my memories are slapping me in the face.
Funny how the human brain works, isn't it? We can completely forget something existed but we hear or see something familiar and it all comes racing back like we never forgot it.
All of your comments, reflections and discoveries fill our hearts (and egos ! ) after all these years. The films prove that they inspire and Nick Jr. were idiots for not understanding the impact they would have. Thank you all for all your comments. ONWARD! Sandra Fierlinger
I fondly remember the gardening clip. I thought Amby's process was silly and I was always frustrated to see the mess at the end, but I loved how she pushed the seeds in with her feet. Gardening has become a small hobby of mine, so rediscovering this was really great. I also now have more appreciation for the unbridled messiness of gardening.
Sandra S Fierlinger thank you so much for the memories you and everyone that made this animation. I was five years old watching this alone in my mom room on her comfy bed waiting for my brothers to come home from elementary school and I really enjoyed these short videos. Very heartwarming. I'm so glad I watched all of them now at the age 22 years old. Thank you!
Thank you SO much for sharing! As soon as I found this is, I asked my mom if she remembered me watching this when I was little! Thank you for these great memories I could share with my mom. I especially loved the gardening scene when I was little. I am now 20 years old. (:
Thank you so much for creating this. I never write comments but with the tears in my eyes from discovering this long lost and fantastic moment of my childhood I had to!! Bless you
I'm now 20 years old. I never would've thought of these short little cartoons when I think of my childhood. But, I remember all of these, and my past just came flooding in. These were so aesthetically pleasing. I remember every single noise. Teared up, not gonna lie.
I know, re-watching this so many old vague memories started reappearing. As if a part of my childhood suddenly reawakened... Wao it's so much nostalgia it hurts!
It is amazing how little things like this can make you have the feelings you had as a kid, I am 18 now so I was young when I saw it but man. The second I started the video I hardly moved or blinked. those were good times.
These characters not only represent being able to use two hands together (ambidextrous) but they're also a reflection on the brain. Dexter is the right hand, which corresponds to the left brain (logic, reason, is more serious) while Amby being the left hand represents the right brain (creativity, art, is much more easy-going)
God I remember having the insane desire to plant something whenever I saw this.. luck would have it around the time I first saw the gardening one my school sent us all home with a sapling to plant. 20+ years on and I now wonder how my tree has been.
It's good to be an adult, embrace it and responsibility and you will find peace, especially if you seek God my friend! Anyway, you can't have nostalgia without growing older 🙂
MY CHILDHOOD :') I've honestly had blurred nostalgia over the seed planting episode occasionally throughout my life, trying to remember what exactly I was even remembering. And today I found the link to this on fb and all the pieces are back together again :'D I feel so happy~~~ I wish children's tv channels nowadays still played classy things like this... :/
The same literally just happened to me. My friend showed me this today and I remembered parts of it; skipped ahead 8 minutes into the video and BOOM the memories come flowing back from my 3-year-old days... Actually made me quite emotional; the brain's amazing.
I feel the same way. I remember watching this when I first moved to New Jersey when I was 11. I was learning English by watching Nick's shows like Blue's Clues and these would pop up during commercials like short little entertaining breaks.
Idk why but I cried watching this. I remember watching this as a kid and hearing the sounds and just watching the animation it was really relaxing to me growing up. Now that I’m watching it again at the age of 25 my inner child is happy I found this again.
Marisol Munoz Amby and Dexter: ambidextrous. It basically means both hands, when a person is able to write with both hands sort of thing. Amby is the right hand, Dexter is the left hand. I think the person is left handed because Dexter is the one who usually did things right while Amby was a bit more "wild" and messed up stuff (like the plant one).
Forgot to add that this was a time when children's television was a lot more imaginative, especially with the different styles of animation. Some of my favorite bits of tv were these animated shorts like these on Nick Jr. & Sesame Street.
I liked the ending for the gardening one. It was a symbolism to show that there can be two separate ways of accomplishing things but it doesn't mean one is more better than the other, hence Dexter and Amby were able to get their seeds to sprout despite their way of going about it.
I wonder why no one can clearly remember this show but yet we still remember it hahaha like I loved the painting and gardening one.. And I remember it NOW but at the same time I don't? What the heck!
I think it's because there's no dialog and most of us watched this show before we were able to read. So we didn't know how to read the title and all we remember are the pictures and the sounds and it's hard to remember something vividly when that's all you're given. But it's so funny how we all are watching it and everything is coming back to us. Amazing
I honestly saw a picture from the painting skit on Facebook and checked the comments for any names of that series. Felt like I was a kid again looking and hearing the familiar images and sounds. I'm 24 now, and it's all coming back to me.
ME TOO! haha.. It looked so familiar and I couldn't put a name in it.. now I remember!! I MISS cartoons like this! Nothing like it. Theres not even any talking or anything and its so creative! These days we have things like SpongeBob..
I think I just realized that one of the creators is the one that uploaded this. I'm 20 and I vaguely remembered this as well. So much nostalgia with this one. I loved the painting one. I remember that. I loved to draw, color, and paint as a kid. And so that's probably why I remember it most
ElBribri Thanks > those ages are over ..we tried to bring good story telling and creativity to the young minds but all the stuff now is really dumbing down the youngins'
Sandra Fierlinger Yes and its really sad, watching clips like this brings me back to my childhood and it makes my creativity flow. Again, thanks you very much, I hope a lot of people were inspried by this, even me, i hope some day do some cool stuff too.
ElBribri hang in there > Paul would say > Draw> Draw Draw and find stories and connections in your day to day life. I would say if you like to paint > Paint Paint paint . Enjoy yourself
Oh! something I noticed Ambi and Dexter are also the left and right hemisphere of the brain one logic and the other creativity working together. This short was really brilliant
This show is just about single-handedly responsible for why I love sounds. especially those involving water and the crinkling of paper. It's such a beautiful show with such beautiful, amazing art and colors. It speaks of a different time, but I have remembered it all of these years in vivid detail. I just couldn't remember the name until it randomly hit me. Thank you so very much for this show. It is a foundation of my childhood.
sameee!! all my older sister did was send me a screenshot of the show, and my first thought was omg that show sounded soooo nice ☺️ before even watching this video
I remember this so vaguely. All I can recall is the characters, not any of the skits, just the fact that there was a paint skit. It's like my childhood to punch to the kidney.
If this came out in 1997 I was ONE YEAR OLD. omg. And I remember this? Especially the painting and the seed one. What I feel when I watch this is that I know nothing about the world, I can't talk or speak or know exactly wth this cartoon is about, but I'm extremely curious, but I'm at peace and I'm calm and it's a feeling that I never have nowadays. and the SOUNDS are so distinct too, omg. This actually made me FEEL like a kid.
Seeing this again, for the first time in what feels like an eternity, is frankly...overwhelming.... I must have been...5 or younger, the last time i saw this. I'm *28* years old now.
It is nice to be 21 and be able to appreciate the old shows and material that I grew up with. It is just a good reminder of the glory days and seeing the things that this new generation is growing up with really makes me appreciate everything that I had even more.
The golden era of Nickelodeon right here. Old Spongebob and Fairly Odd Parents, Blue's Clues, Dora, Rocket Power, Rugrats, Amanda Show, Hey Arnold, Catdog.... And today we have shitty cartoons that all mimic that CN art style. If it weren't for Korra, no one who grew up on 90's Nick or early 2000's Nick would bother with Nick today.
Blues Clues and Dora were for toddlers, why are you grouping them in there? Also, the Amanda Show was terrible. No different from Hannah Montana or ICarly. All just ridiculous over acting that isn't funny. The rest were all great though, but you forgot Angry Beavers.
SsbPrime So? Spongebob, Fairly Odd Parents, Rocket Power, Catdog, etc are not part of Nick Jr. Can you go back and enjoy watching Dora The Explorer now? No, because it was meant for babies, but you CAN go back and watch / enjoy Catdog.
It's because of these shorts that I look at objects differently as an adult. Like I completely forgot about this but all through my life when I would touch tape to wrap a present, almost stare at my keys when I come home from work, or whatever I always felt like I had done all this before. I always had a bunch of deja vu moments in my life but it wasn't. It was just that these shorts were in my subconscious. Amby and Dexter and Little Bear are probably the reason why I am the way I am.
The nostalgia is making me tear up. "Piano" and "Portrait" were always my favorites, and it makes me wonder if that's why I fell into the artist life... Everything about this just makes me feel like a child again.
These few episodes reminded me of the simple these in life. I love all the episodes. Cartoons have lost meaning this day and age. This type of animation was inspiring and still is!
Look at all my fellow 20 year olds who remember this while not quite remembering it at all :) Makes me happy. I remember I enjoyed this so much as a child and I still do. I especially remember the package, plant, and paint ones. Like everyone else, the "Amby" and "Dexter" thing was clever and I never knew the title. Such a simple show but it was repressed there for us all to re-discover. Thank you to the creators :)
This is the most unforgettable forgettable cartoon ever. My cousin showed me a post on instagram about this cartoon, and I couldn't for the life of me figure out where this came from even though I remembered watching it as a child.
Talk about core memories! Even to this day I remember the sounds and certain images vividly, especially the painting and drawing episode and the gardening episode. As an adult I am now obsessed with watercolors and starting seeds in egg cartons!
It hits so hard. The nostalgia. The sound of the water dripping from the paintbrush, the rustling of the paper. I dropped my phone and tears just started forcing their way out. I saw these animations when I was elementary school almost 20 years ago. Where has the time gone? 😢
I'm 20. I'm in college. I'm technically an adult. I started this video and did not blink until the end. I just got so excited seeing this!! I know I'm not old, but it made me miss my childhood!!
And the sound effects of course!! Especially in the wrapping on and the gardening one. Who knew sound effects could bring back your entire childhood. So rich and classic. BREAKING THE REPLAY BUTTON!!
holy shit i honestly think this show is my earliest memory so buried, and so subconscious, i don't even think i was 3 when i saw this watching this feels like im having visions from a past life
I don't even know what I'm feeling right now It's like nostalgia and happiness and a wanton lust for more. like I just want a time Machine to go back in time and just sit on the floor with my 5 year old self and watching Nick Jr. like if science can just get me to the parallel universe where I can do that that would be amazing. Like Blues Clues was just so awesome and Face was muh doode, Out of the box was just epic, I have too many feels right now. I just hope I don't disappoint little me when he finds out how excited I get for these old shows or how fat I got.
the moment i heard the crinkling of the wrapping paper.. nostalgia!! i remember the wrapping paper and the gardening were always my favorite as a kid. something about that sound of paper crinkling and the tape that was always so fun to hear.
Bests parts were Amby trying to get Dexter to stand straight and getting paint all over his face and the part where the seeds are getting watered and Dexter just gets splashed. Way to make a complete mess, Amby.
The audio of 6:19-6:29 was so deeply etched in my memory that long after I had forgotten the actual cartoon, I still vividly remembered the sound. Like, for the longest time I thought that it was a false memory brought about by my overly-active imagination...
I had vague memories of this throughout my life and now finally found it as an adult because of a Facebook post. It’s as vividly as I remembered it to be!! Glad I found it
My siblings and I used to watch these when we were little! Now we're all late 20's/early 30's. We've spoken with each other about them, but none of us could remember the name. I finally heard "Amby and Dexter" somewhere this afternoon and was so pleased to find this video! I sent it to my whole family so we could enjoy it together again. I remembered the one where they were planting seeds, and I vaguely remembered the one where they were making art together, but I had forgotten the others until I found this video. Now it's all flooding back again. Thank you for sharing your work with us!
Dexter is the efficient, organized, practical side of people. While Amby is the playful, imaginative, freethinking part of us. They represent our hands because they're what we use to create art. We use these qualities because they're all crucial in creative forms of expression. What a charming simple concept for animation. I always enjoyed these.
I think it's pretty obvious that the hands transforming into people is a figurative illustration of how dictatorship is a very powerful form of government. The expression of art simply tells us that race has nothing to do with one's intellectual or physical potential, and the key episode was a symbol of the fallacies and weak points of democracy. Once you go a bit deeper in your analysis, give me a reply. loljk
Sandra > of course you are right ( how could any Sandra not be?)> it has absolutely no political message. Just some small films to entertain in a manner not often seen for young children. These were a pilot and as usual they didn't contract more. Crazy. Thank you all for supporting and remembering Amby and Dexter Sandra Fierlinger PS that frame some guy noted to look at is not a penis...hah !
5:17 I remember this one the most. This might be one of the few pieces of media that made me interested in making art as a toddler. Specifically the part where Amby mixes the colors.
Holy shit! When my college music professor would play The Piano Sonata No 16 during class, I would get a really strange feeling of nostalgia. Now it makes sense!!
This is the definition of a fever dream to me. I faintly remember every dam detail... the music.... each movement.... everything. I had to be every bit of 2 or 3 years old watching this while sitting in the family room on my granny's couch while eating banana cream pie yoplait yogurt. The feeling of seeing this isn't even nostalgia. It's something else and I cant even describe it.
The piano one is my favorite, and it's also my favorite musical instrument as well. Seeing these short clips from my childhood makes me feel so nostalgic!
Oh my god, I remember these so vividly!! Especially the paint one and the soil and egg carton one! These used to come on ytv (kids channel in Canada that airs Nickelodeon shows)
Thinking about it, I think these shorts are a big reason why I’m so fond of paper crinkling and tapping sounds even now. Thanks for shaping my ASMR tastes.
you don't know how much i really loved this shorts, they were entertaining for me, and also, they were the beggining of new ideas when i was a child. thank you so much for your job
So much childhood coming out of nowhere! A picture of one scene made me remember all of these along with the sounds...such good times I wish I had back.
I remember watching this as a kid with my dad, he loved this show as much as I did, it really fascinated me as a child and got me interested in art! I have to say this is one of my earliest exposures to art. I'm 22 right now and I'm looking at some old toys of mine and photographs of me and my dad (before he passed away when he was thirteen) and this cartoon is right on the TV in the background!! :)
I loved this mini as a kid. I always loved the sounds, like the waterpaints, the keys, the paper and tape, and the planting. It was always relaxing to me for some reason. I miss the old days like this when kids shows were actually creative :-(
I had a friend who was autistic and the Sounds in this were so sensitive to him when we were little it made him so happy I think this type of Animation uses the best and oldest way of capturing sound for video and it's beautiful
Anybody else have vague recollections of this show throughout their life but could never remember where it came from? It drove me crazy because I remembered it so well but I had no idea how to find it until someone posted the name on Twitter. Now I can clear my sanity. Thank you.
Clarissa High exactly!!!!

you might not believe this, but i have the same story about this skit throughout my life memories of watching late night cartoon network i just found this today, what a moment of clarity
literally everyone born in the late 80s-early 90s
OMG I GET IT. AMBI AND DEXTER. AMBIDEXTROUS. TWO HANDS WORKING TOGETHER!!!
You have blown my mind😱😱😱
wow 23 years old and still notice that
Kiba Bloodfang wow
*slow clap*
I never would've guessed that. Makes so much sense now though

me too!
Oh my gosh yes! The gardening one was my favorite when I was little because of those sounds hahaha.
Omg yes!!! Especially the gift wrapping one!
How ASMR came about
Karuna Satori ASMR my thoughts exactly
I think I just found a repressed memory, as soon as I saw the heart shaped sticker it all came back...
The heart is exactly what had me feeling the same way.

All these twenty some year olds coming to this video (myself included) and remembering these odd visuals and sounds. I guess it was a good cartoon.
I'm 34 and remember this vividly

The sound effects are oddly satisfying.
The sounds were all I remembered of these shorts until I found them again, that's how good it is.
+Ninetails2000 I know right, me too. The sounds are so accurate and emphasized. Whoever did the sounds did a great job.
Yeah they are
that's one thing i loved as a kid, even now just the sounds are so satisfying
nostalgia 1o1
early asmr 😭
I wasn't feeling any nostalgia until I watched to gardening one. It's actually one of my earliest memories.
Gardening one was my favorite but I felt nostalgia with them all.

HAH.. sorry about that...KEEP PAINTING and stay weird
Sandra Fierlinger wowow the animator... i have a question. what is the meaning of the hands?

It was a bumper for Nick Jr shows, so everyone watching them were very young (pre-K ages).
Cause we saw it as infants 😂
I found this randomly on IG of an account of 90s babies and quickly found it.
Oh the Nostalgia I remember the painting more.
I honestly saw a picture from the painting skit on Facebook and checked the comments for any names of that series. Felt like I was a kid again looking and hearing the familiar images and sounds. I'm 24 now, and it's all coming back to me.

Lmao same here. Seems like we all want to search up and research an unvisited memory from our childhoods
exactly. Besides there is nothing on today that can even come close to what television was like 15+ years ago.
Watching Blues Clues, then seeing Amby and Dexter....the memories.
Why do I vaguely remember these cartoons? Especially the seed planting one? This is gonna drive me crazy.

but, if I'm not mistaken, these cartoons came out in 1997. I was, like, 2
shows this in schools a lot
Born in 1994 here, this also feels very vague to me but I also remember it really well.. it's hard to explain.

Blues Clues and Dora were for toddlers, why are you grouping them in there? Also, the Amanda Show was terrible. No different from Hannah Montana or ICarly. All just ridiculous over acting that isn't funny. The rest were all great though, but you forgot Angry Beavers.
siccooper Um Nick Jr. applies to 6 year olds as well.
SsbPrime So? Spongebob, Fairly Odd Parents, Rocket Power, Catdog, etc are not part of Nick Jr. Can you go back and enjoy watching Dora The Explorer now? No, because it was meant for babies, but you CAN go back and watch / enjoy Catdog.
siccooper You're really missing the point here. Didn't know someone could be this stupid
The left hand character had the personality of a lefty and the right hand character had the personality of a righty. Beautiful
+MOONWOLF7395 Now that you mention it, I see it now.
+MOONWOLF7395 and their names are amby and dexter, like when someone is ambidextrous
Watching this and then playing Spyro the Dragon on ps1 was on ANOTHER LEVEL! Life was more than good it was beautiful!
The sound of the tape is so distinct in my memory
I turn 30 in 4 months. This is nostalgia at full blast
Memories flooding back. Childhood relived. Happiness found. Heart overflowing.
I'm 23 now...
and I never ever forgot those
Look at all my fellow 20 year olds who remember this while not quite remembering it at all :) Makes me happy.
After all these years, I finally remembered. My whole week has been made lol
Omg , right in the childhood ! Today's TV will never be better than the 90s TV
I honestly think this is where my ASMR stems from. Not the whispering stuff but like.. rustling objects around.
I’m 29 this is crazy I haven’t thought about these shorts in years but somehow I remember them all
It hits so hard.
BREAKING THE REPLAY BUTTON!!
holy shit i honestly think this show is my earliest memory
so buried, and so subconscious, i don't even think i was 3 when i saw this
watching this feels like im having visions from a past life
I got a little sad watching this, it makes me remember and miss my childhood. That was the happiest I've ever been!
I don't even know what I'm feeling right now
It's like nostalgia and happiness and a wanton lust for more. like I just want a time Machine to go back in time and just sit on the floor with my 5 year old self and watching Nick Jr. like if science can just get me to the parallel universe where I can do that that would be amazing. Like Blues Clues was just so awesome and Face was muh doode, Out of the box was just epic, I have too many feels right now. I just hope I don't disappoint little me when he finds out how excited I get for these old shows or how fat I got.
Out of the box!!!! :D
the moment i heard the crinkling of the wrapping paper.. nostalgia!! i remember the wrapping paper and the gardening were always my favorite as a kid. something about that sound of paper crinkling and the tape that was always so fun to hear.
The one with the seeds makes me laugh. Dexter is like imma make this one perfect and Amby is like YEAH CHAOS!!!!
Now that I found this again... I'm never forgetting lol... Call it crazy, Icall it one of the best memories ever!
Bests parts were Amby trying to get Dexter to stand straight and getting paint all over his face and the part where the seeds are getting watered and Dexter just gets splashed. Way to make a complete mess, Amby.
This show is definitely one of my early memories of ASMR, I can't believe I forgot about it until now!!
this was so visually satisfying to me as a kid and it still is today as a 25 year old!
after all these years, it has finally hit me the word play of the title amby and dexter
The audio of 6:19-6:29 was so deeply etched in my memory that long after I had forgotten the actual cartoon, I still vividly remembered the sound. Like, for the longest time I thought that it was a false memory brought about by my overly-active imagination...
*****
I suppose it did it's job then? Since this stuff was made to activate our imaginations rather than our critical thinking skills.
That's exactly how I felt about the planting one! When they're patting down the soil. This hit me hard!
Sameeeee
Crazy.
Thank you all for supporting and remembering
Amby and Dexter
Sandra Fierlinger
PS that frame some guy noted to look at is not a penis...hah !
Sandra Mariel’s also like left & right side of your brain
Amby and Dexter. Ambidextrous. I just got that after all these years.
It's crazy how all the memories come right back as soon as I watched this I mostly remember the painting and the plant one
Thanks, Tumblr. This was my childhood. This makes me so happy to watch.
5:17
I remember this one the most. This might be one of the few pieces of media that made me interested in making art as a toddler. Specifically the part where Amby mixes the colors.
Holy shit! When my college music professor would play The Piano Sonata No 16 during class, I would get a really strange feeling of nostalgia. Now it makes sense!!
23 years old and i remember this!! Im crying!!
So many childhood memories are happening right now. I thought I imagined this, that's how long it's been. It's weird and fantastic seeing it again.
I can remember being three or four years old watching this. Good times man!
The original ASMR of my childhood
This is the definition of a fever dream to me. I faintly remember every dam detail... the music.... each movement.... everything. I had to be every bit of 2 or 3 years old watching this while sitting in the family room on my granny's couch while eating banana cream pie yoplait yogurt. The feeling of seeing this isn't even nostalgia. It's something else and I cant even describe it.
I'm 22 & I actually remember the planting one!! Thank you Tumblr for reminding me that these existed
The piano one is my favorite, and it's also my favorite musical instrument as well. Seeing these short clips from my childhood makes me feel so nostalgic!
And my parents wonder why I'm into drawing and art. Little did I know I was watching people draw on television and loving it ever since.
This was asmr, I used to love the sound of the paper, the tearing, the brushes. Omg we had the best shows growing up 🥺🥺
Ive never had such an intense nostalgia trip.
I can now confirm that this show is what first got me into asmr as a child. The crinkles, squishes, bells..i love this
you don't know how much i really loved this shorts, they were entertaining for me, and also, they were the beggining of new ideas when i was a child. thank you so much for your job
So much childhood coming out of nowhere! A picture of one scene made me remember all of these along with the sounds...such good times I wish I had back.
This so weird because the nostalgia hit me so hard. I never thought about this show since I was five but over a decade later I remember it instantly.
Amazing, algo blessed me with this childhood memory
I remember watching this as a kid with my dad, he loved this show as much as I did, it really fascinated me as a child and got me interested in art! I have to say this is one of my earliest exposures to art. I'm 22 right now and I'm looking at some old toys of mine and photographs of me and my dad (before he passed away when he was thirteen) and this cartoon is right on the TV in the background!! :)
Buzzfeed brought me here! This makes me feel so nostalgic.
i'm watching this 17 years later stoned, thinking how amazing it is how i recall this show after so much time has passed. the brain is amazing.
It's crazy how I've no recollection of these shorts whatsoever... and yet, I genuinely feel like I've watched them all before when I was small.
I didn’t either till I came across a random video
I loved this mini as a kid. I always loved the sounds, like the waterpaints, the keys, the paper and tape, and the planting. It was always relaxing to me for some reason. I miss the old days like this when kids shows were actually creative :-(
I couldn't agree more. From my perspective, creativity has been slowly becoming a lost art for the past few decades. And today, it is a lost art.
This unlocked a childhood memory!!!
This was something I didn't even know I had forgotten. Watching them all over again feels like deja vu.
Same here!
I know, right? For the longest time I thought these shorts were just, like, things I thought up as a kid and accidentally remembered as being real. XP
This is that memory I didn’t even remember I remembered.
THE PLANT ONE IS THE ONE I REMEMBER THE MOST.
Where my love for ASMR started . I loved watching this as a kid 🥺♥️
I had a friend who was autistic and the Sounds in this were so sensitive to him when we were little it made him so happy I think this type of Animation uses the best and oldest way of capturing sound for video and it's beautiful
