      Alexander Keith - I have been told they are a little dry, but I'm not out to win any contest, just put out the information the only way I know how and let it go. Thanks for watching my friend. 👍👍👍

      Lance Lance - I talk slow because I am slow, lol, lol. Just kidding, I have learned that if you're going to teach someone something they don't know, they absorb it better if you slow down, so hopefully I'm doing a good enough job at that. 👍👍👍

    Mr. Muttonchop, I'm a lifelong cigar smoker who had a horrible time with the covid. I stopped smoking for quite a while (to the detriment of my mental health!) and went down a dark hole in life. Heck, I half forgot how to smoke a cigar, such was my distress. Learning how to smoke a pipe has been a lifeline to me, as has been your channel. I must thank you for sharing your deep knowledge, your kindness and good naturedness with us all. I'm just about able to smoke half a bowl properly and hope to do even better after watching more of your videos. I think I can speak for most pipe folks when i say that your videos are indispensable to the pipe world- we're lucky to have you

      I'm so sorry you had a tough time with Covid, but I'm glad you are on the mend. Thank you so much for your kind words, it warms the heart. Happy Piping my friend.

    I miss you, Muttonchop Piper! I've watched almost all of your videos - what a great gift to the pipe smoking tribe worldwide. I hope your mom's health is improving and that things are going well in both your family life and at work. If I ever see you out in the wild, I hope you'll shake my hand. Thanks for all the thoughtful videos you've made for us to enjoy.

    For those seeking the “vegetable chopper” - it is often identified as a ‘dough knife’ when shopping online. They are readily found at kitchen outlet stores, Amazon, dollar stores, and many other retailers. Happy piping.

      Came here to post on that topic, lol. I call that a pastry knife. I use that when I'm making cinnamon rolls, to cut the slices off the roll of dough. I also use it to clean the table off, scraping the flour and whatnot off the edge of the table into a trash can when I'm busy 'chef-ing'.

    This is a great tutorial on how to properly pack your pipe. I have read several written tutorials on how to pack a pipe and they can be helpful, but when you see it done properly I think this is the best way for a new smoker to learn. Simple and effective. The best. Thanks Muttonchop. Keep it up. Regards, Ken

    ahh im new to pipe smoking and have had problems keeping my pipe lit, i've tried 3 different packing techniques that i've seen on the net and no consistent results. in the end it was the tapping of the bowl, shown in this video, that gave me pretty consistent results. thanks!

    Hey Muttonchop, I just wanted to say I just finished up my nightly pipe with someDunhill Elizabethan. For some time I used (frustratingly) the three step method. For some reason I always ended up with it too tightly packed at the bottom. Using this method I relit once while outside in some light wind and I could really savor the flavor. I continue to improve and enjoy every smoke more and more because of your fantastic videos. Thank you sir, you have a special place in Heaven. Happy piping!

    Amazing video. I’m new to pipe smoking. I got a country gentleman. I was smoking cigarettes and I am a train conductor and one of the engineers I work with smokes a pipe and he suggested it to me and I smoked his and it was really good. Picked one up the other day and I was having troubles. But now it’s getting a lot better with practice and of course help with your videos. Not every day you see a 19 year old pipe smoking but now I have been smoking out of pleasure. Not just a habit. Very nice. And thank you once again. Wish me luck Muttnchop Piper

    i discovered something interesting, i found a way to loosen a pack/draw without having to unload your pipe. what you do is lets say you pack your pipe and its too tight to your liking. what you want to do is cover the bowl with your hand tight but loose enough to let a little bit of air escape the bowl then you blow hard for about a second and it will give you a perfect draw. not sure why but i noticed this with my last bowl. give t a try once if you pack too tight. i enjoy your videos. very informative kudos

    • @snuffman5497
      @snuffman5497 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      im not quite sure what im doing wrong but i cant seem to pack a bowl and get a good draw. ive tried many different methods it always ends up like a light milkshake through a straw consistency regardless of how lightly i press the tobacco. i literally just had to unpack and repack my pipe like 10 times before i got a decent draw. ive been smoking since february-march. its really frustrating. seems to happen regardless of the cut. could it be a problem with my pipe? when i first started i rarely had this problem

    • @MuttnchopPiper
      @MuttnchopPiper  7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Hukman! - if you only have 1 pipe, my suggestion would be to acquire a second one, if funds are low, you can pick up a Corn Cob for about $10.00 try packing the new pipe, if you get a good draw, then yes there is a problem with your original pipe. In the mean time see if you can send a regular pipe cleaner through the stem to the bottom of the bowl, if it travels freely then the pipe is probably ok, if it hangs up, or stops part way down, then you may have a problem. 😏😏😏

Between you two guys I don't believe I could have found better teachers. This particular video was very educational, I smoked 4 bowls before this particular video. LOL the first two bowls I did the rookie mistake and got excited and burnt my tongue I find that funny and painful at the same time I did not pay attention. I'm on my 5th Bowl right now as we do this text, I followed your instructions step by step, I'm enjoying the best smoked of My Life The Best Pack I have done. Thank you for being around to educate us new people to the Hobby.

It wouldn't work very well as a veggie chopper since it's not sharp. ;-)

    Just started watching your videos and I enjoy them very much. You have a way of explaining things a little bit out of the box that can be real helpful. I do however remember from school and science classes that fire or burning takes Three elements. 1)Fuel 2)oxygen...... you can have those two in abundance right on top of each other in the middle of a field and nothing will happen..... you have to have #3) Heat.... for there to be any burning. Now I understand that's maybe self-explanatory. It just kind of caught me off guard when you kept saying fire takes two things.
    But regardless of that minor detail, thank you for your videos they very informative. I just recently started smoking a pipe. I've watched several of your videos and really enjoyed them. I just received five different tobacco's from your favorites list video you did. Im looking forward to nice smoke with great flavors from your favorite choices.

    Sir, thank you for this packing video. I had been struggling with getting the pack right to the point of frustration, and I haven't been able to get any sound advice about how hard to pack except for the usual, "enough to get a good draw, but not too loose." The Marshmallow analogy has provided me a perfect reference. The paper/Dollar Store vegetable chopper is a great idea, as well. I've been dropping tobacco on the table, myself, and eventually, the floor - which means my Dyson is deriving a modicum of pleasure from my aromatics.

      Np. I'm learning a lot from your channel. I used to smoke a Peterson pipe but I was a newbie (still am) and I was always getting tongue bite. Gonna try to ditch the cigs and take up pipe smoking in the spring/summer. I've been eye-balling an Erik Nording Oversized Burgundy pipe I might gift myself for Christmas. I use nasal snuff and swedish snus once in a while, too, so it is fair to say I have a love affair with all things tobacco. Although, I have never gotten into dip or chew tobacco. That never really appealed to me. I just found your channel last night actually, so I am starting from your first video and working my way through. One question I do have is, how long should you let a briar pipe rest after you smoke a bowl? Merry Christmas and keep up the great work!!!

    • @MuttnchopPiper
      @MuttnchopPiper  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Konrad von Marburg - I typically smoke 2 or 3 bowls out of the same pipe a day, but after that I let it rest and dry out for at least 24 Hours. 👍👍👍

      Try being in Australia. A 50g pouch of pipe tobacco starts at around 75 bucks, that's $57.38 American dollars, and $43.87 pounds. Even finding somewhere to buy a pipe that isn't hundreds of dollars can be a challenge.

I have just finished a smoke of 30 mins in my corn cob, and will see if you have any for corn cobs as I prefer them to any other pipes. They are often looked down at due to the price but I have no complaints about my set. Happy smoking dude !!!

      metaknowledge2010 - I am not one of those that looks down on Corn cobs, I love them because they are cheap in price, but not in manufacturing, no ghosting, so you can smoke anything in them AWSOME!!!!! 👍👍👍

    I use my desk for sprinkling, and get baccy back into my tin by using the flap from a pack of cigarette papers as a scraper/sweeper of sorts to push the baccy into a big pile and then over the edge of the desk into my tin. Figured I'd put that out there for anyone who might have cigarette paper packets laying around.

    I put the tobacco in a zippered money bag I bought in Staples and place the pipe inside the bag - and just use my fingers inside the bag to fill the pipe - nothing spills, it’s an old fashioned way because I’m old - but it’s also the best way.

    Being too young at the time to be taught by my dad, and too old now to give a damn, i find these videos very informative, but the best ones basically say...pack it, smoke it, figure it out, everyone likes their own pack and smoking regiment. (whole bowl 20+ minutes or bowl relighting over a few hours).

    I know what you mean about the "not wasting one morsel" of tobacco; I'm always very careful not to lose any of it; plus I thought that was a good idea to use the marshmallow as a guide to the amount of pressure to apply when packing.

      Alex - Cool, falcons are Awsome, now make sure you get 2 or 3 more bowls for it so you can let each one rest for 24 hours, resting allows them to dry out so you can have a sweet smoke every time you light up. 👍👍👍

    Brillant. Never thought yo use a vegetable chopper. Gonna try it. I use a piece of white Styrofoam packing material. Im frugal and haye wasting any tobacco. As for packing i heard leave the tobacco a third of an inch be low the top of the pipe, since it rises when lit. To keep from scorching yhe pipe. Your thoughts.

    This method works well for ribbon. But I have trouble using it for denser tobacco. For example, a crumble cake. Would you use this for something like Plum Pudding or instead just fill the bowl and maybe lightly push once?

    • @MuttnchopPiper
      @MuttnchopPiper  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Paul M - You got it, you are absolutely correct, tobaccos like plumb pudding are like sand, you make sure it’s broken up good, then pour it in, lightly press down on the tobacco, and off you go. 👍👍👍

    My dad occasionally smokes a pipe and lost the one my grandfather used during a recent move. I was thinking with father's day around the corner I could replace it. I'm pretty much learning everything I know from your videos but don't have a clue what pipe to purchase. Is there a pipe or brand you'd recommend for a gift? Please keep in mind I love my dad but am not trying to spend a fortune. Thank you for your informative videos.

    • @MuttnchopPiper
      @MuttnchopPiper  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Eric Pierson - it would help if you can remember the shape of the pipe your dad lost. There are 3 brands of pipe I would recommend, Savinelli of course which is my favorite, they have lots of styles, shapes, sizes, and finishes and the prices are reasonable. The other 2 brands I would suggest is Peterson, and Chacom. I would also suggest you go to Smokingpipes.com to look at the pipes I suggested and you might find others to look at as well. When you get to the site click on pipes, then new pipes, a list of all the companies that make pipes will be listed with the price range of the pipes each company makes. 👍👍👍

    @muttnchop piper where do you get the labels that you put on the top of your jars I see in the background? And how do you get them on there? Are they just the tops of the tins the tobacco came in?

    • @calvinstulip
      @calvinstulip 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      In his video "My Pipe Collection & Tobacco Rotation," at 9:29 he addresses this question. He prints them using a high resolution image of the brand's tobacco tin label - prints it on some paper and affixes it to the glass jar using some glue. He says the type of adhesive he uses makes it easy to remove the label if he wants to fill it with another blend of tobacco. Check it out! Hope this was helpful.

    The method being explained at the 7-8 minute marks is also known as the 'Father-Mother-Child' method. Not quite sure why, being as the 1st pack is the easiest, 2nd is moderate, and the final pack is heaviest...but, it is what it is. Also, don't forget to 'draw' on the unlit pipe...should be about as 'firm of draw' as trying to drink an average milkshake through a straw...too difficult, you'll fight the burn all the way to the bottom and have excessive heat too. Too easy, and the bowl will burn out quickly.
