Absolutely stunning video Stuart of this magnificent city. I would probably say that it's my favorite city in inland Spain. If you go there again El Mercado Municipado Central is well worth a visit. It's in the Plaza del Mercado which is right next to the Plaza Mayor. Not only is it in a spectacular building over 100 years old, it is absolutely buzzing inside with an electric atmosphere. Thank you for sharing this fantastic video with us. You have most certainly done this city justice with this carefully and expertly filmed video. 😀👍👍👍

I took students there for 2 months of language and culture at the University of Salamanca in summers for 30 years
1989-2019, have continued going every year on my own for research and other venues, NO, I never grew tired of the city and the people, it is all in my DNA, a treasure of a place, will be there again this July for a couple of weeks for research and visiting friends- put it on your bucket list

Sorry can I ask does the uni here have intensive language classes in the summer ? For a 16/17 year old. I’m desperate to find an immersive language experience for my teen. I paid nearly €2000 in April for 2 weeks in a language school and family in Spain but with other English speaking teens. Any info is appreciated, thank you !

Having studied at the Univ of Valencia, toured all of Spain and yes, Salamanca and its architecture and the cathedrals were breath taking. At night the lighting on the architecture /buildings will blow you away. I for some reason like northern Spain more than the southern half. Good video and do enjoy your walking tours a lot.

A wonderful video, Stu. I´ve been to Salamanca twice in the last two years, once on a one-week course for Spanish teachers and then again accompanying a group of students. On that second occasion, I had plenty of time to walk the streets and discover places in Salamanca so that I could show them later to my students. And you were right saying that you don´t get tired of it. There are amazing places to visit, like the Art Deco Museum Casa Lis, the interior of the Palacio de Monterrey, or the two convents standing next to each other - El Convento de San Esteban and El Convento de las Dueñas. The top attraction for me was the Ieronimus tour, which meant climbing the Cathedral towers and walking along the roofs and the interior galleries of that magnificent structure. I want to go back.

There has always been something special about Salamanca and I go whenever I get to have the opportunity. I will never forget the first time I saw the lights come on one evening in the Plaza Mayor, it is a truly magical place with so much to do. Anyone who goes must try the famous "hornazo", pastry.
I also did hear that the Plaza Mayor in Madrid tried to copy the Salamanca style architecture.

This city is worth a visit (or five). The university is the oldest in Spain, founded in 1.218. The region is scarcely populated but holds fantastic historical and natural wonders. People in this area speak good and clear Spanish if you want to practice. Their character is not as spicy as in the South, they are calmer (cold winters?). While in the province visit Ciudad Rodrigo, Béjar and La Alberca (a poignant small medieval hamlet), located in a wonderful mountainous area. Definitely, if you feel like getting off the typical touristic beaten tracks, go to Salamanca city and beyond.

The plaza has a reputed Hemingway drinking hole, replete with life-size commemorative statue. And it is lined with stone-carved images of Spain's monarchs, plus one General Franco (controversial perhaps), and one non-Spaniard, the Duke of Wellington no less, a tribute to his role in what the Spanish call La Guerra Independencia, aka the Peninsular War (one of Wellington's most famous battles having been fought not far from Salamanca, to the south, near the small village of Arapiles, also worth a visit. At Salamanca cathedral, see if you can spot the astronaut carved, if I remember correctly, into the wall near or above the entrance, apparently during restoration works a few years back!

Salamanca and Segovia are my two favorite small cities from going with my daughter's high school and another high school, both from Dubuque, Iowa, USA from June 8th to June 16th, 2018. We also went to Toledo and The Valley of the Fallen, Madrid, Barcelona, Lloret de Mar and many cathedrals and monasteries... Catholic, Jewish, and Moorish. We stayed in Madrid for 2 nights, then in Segovia while touring Salamanca, Toledo and the Valley of the Fallen. Then on the bullet train to Barcelona for a day or two and then for two days in Lloret de Mar. My first time to Spain, I was 15 in June 1990 right after finishing 9th grade/Freshman year of high school and that was for 18 days starting out in England, France, Spain, and a day trip to Tangiers, Morocco! Salamanca and Segovia are my favorites though, but Madrid, Barcelona and Lloret de Mar I think I could live in. I'm 49½ years old though now. It might be a little difficult to do being on a fixed income from being a disabled veteran from the USA Army. Maybe some day. Last November my daughter and I tried going to Manzanares el real but our flight in New York City got messed up and we had to turn around and go back home. She worked full time for Delta Airlines at the time.

Salamanca, what a vibrant city. It has special meaning for me as the University was founded by one of my earliest ancestors, Alfonso IX. We stayed in the Hotel on the Plaza which had a balcony overlooking the magnificent Plaza itself. You can see exceptional Historic Architecture in the conjoined Cathedrals and those of the buildings which comprise the renowned University. You can feel the vibe of a University Town in the class of people as well as in the buildings themselves. The Roman bridge, which has withstood the ages, was spectacular!! What historical artifacts lie at the bottom of that river!! One can only imagine...

I'm looking for a town to stay in for two months in spring 2025. Can you recommend Valladolid or Salamanca?

Salamanca sí tiene zonas vitivinícolas. Sierra de Francia con su uva Rufete y las Arribes con su uva Juan Garcia. La zorra, viña Cambrico, 500 uvas y muchas más bodegas.

Amazing city. Big enough to fullfill your every need, yet small enough to no have to put up.eith the Madrid traffic and crowds.
But boy. You will freeze your cojones of in winter.

I'm pretty sure taking two trains is better than driving. Once in Salamanca you may want to visit Zamora, about only 50 km North and conected by train and bus.
