  • When it comes to shiny paint, most people want more shine, not less shine. And most people who start learning how to buff a car will not only polish their car to create more shine, but to also remove car paint scratches and other paint defects.
During this impromptu detailing video, Darren takes a moment to polish the back bumper of this black car to give some detailing tips as a beginner.
Most car owners lack the experience to even ask the right questions and can often have unrealistic expectations due to either misinformation, or basic ignorance of working constraints.
Darren discusses briefly why not al scratches created equal and what this means to you as a car owner looking to buff a your car with hopes of restoring shine, along with removing some of the car paint scratches.

Only way to remove those is wetsanding. If the paint on the other panel is really thin, I would go directly to 3000 grit and skip the 1500-2000-2500 grits that I would normally used for scratch removal. 3000 is not gonna make it perfect but in my experience it's a lot more effective than polishing alone, especially on the 3 inch pads we are forced to use on this narrow part of the body. The major issue for me is that my paint gauge cannot read on plastic panels, so it's always a gamble working on them.

He was very happy! Largely because now he understands how things work as far as removing scratches, clear coat thickness, why you would not want to remove all scratches, etc. Most car owners really don't understand clear coat, color coat, and paint systems in general and the limitations of these moments based on polishing or scratch removal.
