  • Israel’s series of military successes against its longtime adversary Hezbollah had raised the question of whether the militant group’s backer, Iran, would retaliate. On Tuesday, that question was answered, when Iran fired a barrage of missiles at Israel.
Patrick Kingsley, the Jerusalem bureau chief for The Times, and Farnaz Fassihi, The Times’s United Nations bureau chief, discuss how they see events developing from here.
    Guest:
    • Patrick Kingsley (www.nytimes.co...) , the Jerusalem bureau chief for The New York Times.
    • Farnaz Fassihi (www.nytimes.co...) , the United Nations bureau chief for The New York Times.
    Background reading:
    • Fiery balls of light could be seen falling from the sky over Jerusalem and loud explosions could be heard in Tel Aviv and other areas as Iran launched 180 ballistic missiles at Israel (www.nytimes.co...) .
    • After the missile attack, Israel may be more prepared to risk war with Iran (www.nytimes.co...) .

Sabrina talks of Israel's "stunning series of military successes" which include the pager boobytrap bombings. So I have the following question for more seasoned readers of the NYT:
Where in the NYT archive can I find references to the "precise targeting" and sophisticated tradecraft of the IRA's audaciously ingenious letter-bombing campaign in London in the 1970s? The strategy involved literally addressing the explosive ordnance to the intended target and co-opting the Royal Mail as a trojan horse to deliver the device through the target's front door. Yes, regrettably "noncombatants were also drawn into the fray" as unavoidable collateral damage during what can only be described as an "elaborate ruse" - if I am permitted to apply the NYT's language (from its recent coverage) in a consistent manner.

From the Times of Israel (October 1st): "A number of impact sites have been identified across Israel, with images of missile fragments circulating on social media. The exact locations of such impacts and damage are barred from publication by the IDF censor."
From Israeli newspaper Ha'aretz (October 2nd): "The Israel Defense Forces confirmed on Wednesday that several air force bases had been damaged in the Iranian missile attack the night before"
