Thanks for the minor rebuild. But my problem is that my float doesn’t reach to the point to shut off. How do I adjust the float so it shuts the water off after each flush.
I got tired of waiting for my husband to fix the constant running toilet, and I thought about calling a plumber but decided to do a Google search first and try myself. After watching both videos, I removed the fill valve out of my toilet and brought it with me to the hardware store. I found a replacement and replaced the old fill valve ALL BY MYSELF with zero plumbing experience. Amazing. The cost was $8 and the time it took was only about 30 minutes but the experience and pride I feel is worth so much more. Thank you, Roger!
I can relate!! I’m definitely not handy at all. The only thing I’ve done to a toilet was change the handle/lever thingy when it randomly broke one night. I did some research, went to the store. Fixed it all by myself, and I was/am super proud 😁 But now, a few months later, it’s been running, so I checked out these videos. He does a wonderful job of explaining everything, but I’m still kinda like “uhhhhh I have no idea what I’m doing” 🤣 But I guess there’s hope for me yet! You go girl!!!!! 💪

Great vid. Going to use this with my students. The only thing I haven't seen (yet) in your vids is a mention of how chlorine weakens these parts. We have enough chlorine in our municipal supply that you can sometimes smell it. It wreaks havoc on all these plastics overtime. The parts are so cheap, we tell folks to just swap it all out since you already went through the trouble of prepping for the task. The rubber parts all harden so might as well and just avoid future leaks.
Excellent video. Should have watched it in its entirety before replacing my fill valve. Busted off the plastic tube at the base of the flush valve. No worries as your video covered that as well. Despite having to make an extra trip to the hardware store to replace the piece I broke...I believe this video saved me $$. The video simplifies an easy fix and is well worth the time.

Note for if your toilet is running every few minutes. I had a toilet that would run for a couple seconds every few minutes. I replaced fill valve and flapper and it still doing it. I had just put the tube down into the overfill tube. Apparently this causes a siphon and pulls water from the tank and thus the fill valve tries to refill. I just cut the rubber hose to length and used the fill hose connector that mounts to the top of the overfill tube. This fixed my issue immediately. So, try this if you have that tube just stuck down the overfill tube

@@ingridlizhernandez9566 On the fill valve (the part with the float that the water supply is connected to) has a rubber hose connected to it that fills the tank after flushing. I will put the flapper in and then the flapper will go up and go straight back down before the toilet can flush. Do you know how to solve that problem or do I just need a different type of flapper?
After replacing the fill valve following one of your other videos, found out it was actually a crack at the base of the overflow tube on the flush valve lol. I'll now be following your other video to replace the flush valve. xD
Okay, watched No. 1 and this one No. 2 - I replaced the entire fill valve, but it is still running water out of the top of the diaphragm area? Any thoughts? Thanks so much. I
Hi - Your videos are thorough and straight forward - love it! One question. The knob for turning off the water is really tight and super hard to move. I plan to try some WD40, but if that doesn't work, anything else I can try to loosed up the knob? It's hard to turn the water flow off and on. Thanks!
The EZ change faucet style tool with a thick red plastic handle has a metal insert placed into one end that fits over a rectangular shut-off valve handle. The length of the handle gives better torque for turning, particularly with a stuck handle. Be sure to turn gently so as not to snap off the handle, particularly if the shut-off valve handle is plastic or a composite of plastic and metal. I do spray first with a WD-40 type product to lubricate the threads, helping to break up the mineral build-up causing the handle to stick in the first place, and breaking down any rust on a metal shut-off valve. Also, I have read that first very gently wiggling the handle to the left and right may help to break up any build-up gunk on the threads. Although this specialty tool name indicates it is for faucet use, and it is indeed great for faucet repairs / installs, the mentioned metal insert it comes with is specifically designed for shut-off valve handles.
so my flapper was leaking, the flapper that was being used was a danco brand the under side nipple was gone so is that bottom nipple in the base toilet or is it all ready in my septic line?
Question: My tank has 3 screws to connect to the bowl. I have done all the suggestions here and am wondering if I need to make sure the tank is parallel / level as well. Thoughts?
The leak is usually caused by age deterioration of the rubber gasket that seal between the toilet tank screws and the bottom of the toilet tank. Silicon is not a reliable repair as the rubber gaskets will continue to deteriorate
It would be helpful if you would explain why the fill valve can cause the toilet to run all the time. Why is it that trash in the diaphragm can cause it to run all the time? Understanding how things work helps to diagnose the problem correctly.
I'm on well water in this house I moved to less than 2 years ago and noticed the toilet continues to run - sometimes. Turns out, my problem is the chain on the flapper is a bit rusted, so sometimes it kinda kinks up and keeps the flapper lifted ever so slightly.
Hello. I'd like to ask a question. How to fix the running toilet that's wall-mounted? Is the mechanism need to be replaced completely or is there something that would prevent water from leaking 24/7?
when changing a fill valve ALWAYS stick your hand over it when turning water back on....i had one that that i thought was clicked in shoot up like a rocket ...even worse is they had that damn blue cleaner that made a mess all over the place..this was 12 years ago and still take caution..
I’ve got all of this stuff done but what’s the best way to seal the tank up again? I chipped a few edges when I was cutting the back window/access port thing into to the tank so should I use silicone/caulk or something ? My wife is convinced I ruined the toilet but I’m trying to tell her yours is exactly the same.i think she is just tired of hearing the grinder
What if the supply line seems faulty? It is the cheapest install you’ve ever seen and on a brand new house. I twist and twist and water supply never shuts off. My problem inside the toilet tank is a hissing fill valve. Toilet flushes and fills properly, shuts off with no leak, and is quiet. But doesn’t hold. Hissing starts in 2-5 minutes especially if you touch or move the toilet. (Flap seal seems good..It is quiet and I see no water loss in tank.) but what is causing the fill valve to hiss??
Replaced mine today but the water is slightly trickling from the front of the toilet bowl. I suspect it is the chipboard washer as the hole on our tank (our toilet is a Crane 3436) seemed a bit big and it was difficult to center it so the chipboard washer cover the hole. Is there another option to use instead of the chipboard washer? And, I only hand-tightened mounting nut per the instruction sheet. Could that be it? Any info appreciated. Thanks!
At 6:51 in the video, he does the final tightening with a couple of turns using the large channellock style pliers if that is the plastic nut you are referring to.
If this video saved you some money let me know by leaving a comment!

Amazing video Sir
I did my first toilet fix!!
Thanks!
Carlos Roberto what all parts did you have to replace? Thanks for watching, commenting, and hopefully subscribing!
I replace everything just like in the video THANKS!!!
Question: My tank has 3 screws to connect to the bowl. I have done all the suggestions here and am wondering if I need to make sure the tank is parallel / level as well. Thoughts?
I did it!!!!yes 64yrs and I did it!!thank you sooo much!!
Big win! So glad to hear
can a sealant be used inside the tank around the base of the fill valve to prevent leakage and a running toilet??
The leak is usually caused by age deterioration of the rubber gasket that seal between the toilet tank screws and the bottom of the toilet tank. Silicon is not a reliable repair as the rubber gaskets will continue to deteriorate
Just replaced toilet fill valve and flapper. So easy, thank @RogerWakefield! Now I wish I had a couple half bathrooms to fix!!! 😃
Thank you very much. That is really courteous of you.
Hola/Bonjour Senior Wakefield:
What should one do, if fill valve over or under fills le tank?
It would be helpful if you would explain why the fill valve can cause the toilet to run all the time. Why is it that trash in the diaphragm can cause it to run all the time? Understanding how things work helps to diagnose the problem correctly.
I said same thing. But guess I have to try first don’t want to change my 1906 ball system to a flapper.
How do I know which flap valve should I purchase? I have a running toilet and bought 3 different ones and none of them have cured the problem. Thanks
I'm on well water in this house I moved to less than 2 years ago and noticed the toilet continues to run - sometimes. Turns out, my problem is the chain on the flapper is a bit rusted, so sometimes it kinda kinks up and keeps the flapper lifted ever so slightly.
Big thanks, Roger. I broke one of the bolts holding the tank to the bowl. Talk about a mess.
Liked and Subscribed. Thanks.
Thank you just did it myself easy Peezy Japanese thanks again
Do you have a video on how to fix Constantly running water on a dual top flush toilet. I have a Glacier Bay toilet.
Learned a lot! Thanks!
Thank you! Video made simple an easy to follow.
15 min and I got a working toilet instead of a running toilet thank you
Really appreciate your videos!
Hey Roger, is it true that if the small hose coming off the fill valve is below the level of the water it can make the toilet run?
I just want say thank you. It took less than 5 minutes to fix my toilet.....Again, thank you
Hello. I'd like to ask a question. How to fix the running toilet that's wall-mounted? Is the mechanism need to be replaced completely or is there something that would prevent water from leaking 24/7?
what great contenet very helpful!
when changing a fill valve ALWAYS stick your hand over it when turning water back on....i had one that that i thought was clicked in shoot up like a rocket ...even worse is they had that damn blue cleaner that made a mess all over the place..this was 12 years ago and still take caution..
I got squirted in the face lol caught me by surprise
@@ajg.8629 thats what she said
Or barely turn the water back on and see if you have issues before you open the valve fully.
Thank you for the video! Helped me fix it! Easy
Thanks for the informative video- I’m watching this before I go ahead and work on my toilet
Perfect! Good luck, hope it works
One of my toilet jets has a continues slow leak thus empting out my flush which then keeps refilling. Any suggestions please?
Thank you so much for the clear explanation! I just successfully fixed the leaking toilet in my creaky old house!
You are awesome, great job !
Thank you for the help !!
Can you please show us how to fix a dual flush toilet? Im still having trouble with mine and its only 3 yrs old. Thank you kindly Sir.
I've seen where it says the water level is the key. But I can't figure out how to get that float set right. I've tried everything.
Great video! Thanks!
most of my running toilet problems are due to the chain getting tangled and the flapper cannot seat . Should I eliminate the chain?
How do you adjust the height of the fill valve?
Great video, this saved me a lot of time and money.
thank you, i was able to fix my toilet today from your video..wahoooo, i did what you said and i just wanted to let you know..
this is a solid 'how-to' video. thanks
Glad it was helpful!
