In the US, after getting your pilot license, you need to collect at least 1500 hours before going right seat of the regional plane. About salary part, I totaly agree with you. That's exactly what I said actually :) In the begining you are earning an ok salary :)

Hey, It depends. If you can bid for the flights and you are senior enough you can be sleep in your bed at home everyday. That being said, this is not the case for the most airlines. I had 15 days at hotels when I was flying narrow body in Turkish Airlines.
Well, hard to answer this question. Most of the pilots are away from home for a certain duration. In Europe, lowcost companies don't have much layover. Therefore, you are pretty much at home each night.
