It's the cream of them all is what I think. It takes all the best elements of the radio dramas I grew up on in the 50s and takes them to a whole new level, especially when the scripts are written by Elspeth Eric.

A very good and touching story. I think we all talk to death when we think the end is near or just doesn't have nothing to live for even for love.

Many, always wanting what is not had...always overlooking what should be appreciated, ever seeking that which does not come, because it can't be seen --- Why is that? There can be 'reasons' for cheating, and of course, easier are ways to walk away from it, without playing the blame game. Those who can't be satisfied, are unable to see what's real.

EG Marshall says her unseen friend is death, and in the hands of any other CBSRMT writer it would be as simple as that. But this is Elspeth Eric and she's never cut-and-dried simple. There are more ways than one to see that visitor. For another, there's the fact EE touches on Jungian themes a lot.
In Carl Jung's personality theory there's a feminine entity in every man ( the anima) and a male side within every woman (the animus). That inner gender-opposite is the gateway between the ego and the self: Self-realization isn't possible till we integrate the animus or anima.
Our heroine is working through that integration process as she lies in her hospital bed. Self-realization is a kind of death because it's the end of who we thought we were and the birth of awareness of the self we didn't know we were. So her friend is both death and the animus. I'm not saying that's the only way to see it; with EE there's always a multiplicity of possibilities.
