    Bernie, this is truly next level MAD SCIENTIST.... I love it!! Will have to show this to my dad who designs and builds magnets for the Cornell Synchrotron lab. I'm working with him this week to analyze and remagnetize "undulator" assemblies that were demagnetized by radiation from a misaligned electron beam. That Honda Pilot was insane. Was the frequency of the CKP signal being messed up? Wish you could graphed the frequency! 🙂

    2. Man consults with a physicist, then engineers and builds a mechanical device from scratch to fix said problem.

    Great find, great instructional video! I know a television repair tech that would degauss the crt (picture tube) using a 100 watt soldering gun. Squeeze the trigger on the soldering gun and it produces a strong alternating magnetic field. Move the gun around close to the area you want to degauss. These soldering guns are actually step down transformers. The soldering tip gets hot because it is connected as a short across the transformer secondary with high current flowing through it. It would be interesting to test the strength of the field emitted from one of these old school soldering guns.

    Great video Bernie !!..when I was an inspector for the airlines we used magnetic particle inspection to look for cracks in metal like landing gear etc…always had to use a commercial degausser after we magnetized the gear…cheap way is to use a hammer or heat the metal to its Curie temperature which is over 1,000 degrees…if I were use I’d use a hammer first…LOL !!

    I worked at a machine (tool & die) shop for nearly a decade. We had a Blanchard grinder that ground down the thickness of the extrusion dies we built. It used a giant electromagnetic table to hold the dies still while it rotated under the stones. After we ground it to the correct thickness and we shut the table off, it would pulse the magnet on and off for a minute or two while it demagnetized the steel dies. I'm definitely not sure of the science behind it, but we also had smaller demagnetizing tools out there and it seemed like all of them pulsed on and off during the process.

    I am totally blown away with this diagnosis. I have never seen this before. Didn’t even know that target wheel and crankshaft can get magnetized. Thanks Mr. Thompson. This open my eyes on scope tool. I did get one lesson on the 2005 Nissan after market cam sensor. one ran for 1 year and when it fail, the second one ran only one day. I lost because I thought 3 wire sensor got digital signal and it should not effected by too strong magnet. too strong magnetized cam reluctor wheel cause the sensor ground the signal 100 % time. car wont start. I now know. I should pulling the sensor out the hole and it may start the car. I would think to try the new OEM sensor. The OEM sensor got a metal shell over the tip so it wont get effected by the cam reluctor wheel either too close to the sensor nor got magnetized. DVOM is not working on this problem.

  • @AVCONSULTTX
    @AVCONSULTTX 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Excellent video, Bernie. It's possible that a tape head degausser, used through the sensor hole, would minimize the teeth magnetization sufficiently, and also level the difference in mag strength between teeth. The mag strength between teeth may be messing the the sensor electronics which probably has compensation circuitry to "zero" or ignore some level of residual tooth magnetism (pretty common with magneto resistive sensors). If the tape head degauuser didn't work, then a TAPE degausser might work held to the sensor hole, or directly on the teeth with the oil pan removed. Last, you can hold the degaussing coil stationary while someone else rotates the crank. And a reminder to gradually pull the coil back before you switch of coil power, otherwise you can remagnetize the nearest teeth again.

  • @googacct
    @googacct 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Great video as always. On the degausser a few thought.
    You may want to try to convert this into a U-magnet. With just a simple pole, you are not completing the magnetic circuit and the field is bleeding out through the sides of the solenoid. If you can provide a complete magnetic circuit from north to south pole, then the flux should be even more concetrated.
    For the windings, it might be a good idea to dip the windings in some kind of varnish or thin epoxy. Doing this is a vacuum degasser would eliminate any air pockets. With only tape around the wires, they could still manage to vibrate enough to wear through the insulation and create a short circuit.

    He used a 12" dia coil no onff switch and it was plugged into the 110 outlet ( early 70's). I figure it had to have a current limiter, But was it cool to see the interaction with the screens.
    I have never thought of doing what you did with using a smaller version.

      My Dad was a TV tech too, with a degausser that I would describe just as you did. It would get a little warm. Back in the 70s. It was heavy and must have had a lot of coils. It was wrapped in electrical tape, so the coils couldn't be seen. Looked like a steering wheel with an electrical cord coming from it.

    Bernie, can you please elaborate on your comment that ground was rerouted. On Honda V6, there is a ground cable that attaches from top of the radiator support to the transmission. The factory battery ground cable does not connect to starter, but just goes to the body metal by the battery. So my question is, was that transmission ground cable on the car and if it was, was it really frayed and crusty?

    I spent decades working on power generation - after the controls went electronic the primary input was from a magnetic pickup - the magnetic pulse was generated by the teeth on the flywheel - the electronic governor would measure the time that it would take to go from one rising edge to the next - sometimes it would be fron one rising edge to the 10th rising edge... the logic was simple - generators require a constant speed at every load - so if the speed slows down from the set point the governor gives the engine more fuel.. the magnetic pickup is nothing more than a magnet wrapped in a coil of wire so when a tooth from the flywheel passes it there is a electric pulse generated... so when the speed of the generator would get erratic or it wouldn't start the first thing I would do is take out the magnetic pickup and check for metal particles - the metal particles would eratticaly short out the mag pickup and corrupt the speed input signal to the electronic governor.. since the mag pickup was sensing the flywheel we knew the starter would cause very small slivers of metal to attach to the magnetic pickup.

    I can't imagine 16 gauss vs 250-300 of the sensor causing problems. Also the problem would be periodic with crankshaft revolution....makes me wonder if something messed up inside the ecm with triggeri voltage levels. Could the collapse of the magnetic field from the incorrectly routed starter cable damage the ECM through the crank sensor coil? Thinking about the waveform, there is electronics inside the sensor to shape the waveform into a square wave...maybe the new sensor got damaged by the first crank.
    I keep forgetting about the sensors in the phone...they are 3 axis. With a graphing app I think you could do a quick relative compression check by holding phone next to battery cable...I need to try it.
    A doorbell transformer may work.

    How are these trigger wheels becoming magnetized?

    A degausser works by changing the polarity of the magnetic field so you need to get close to the part you want to demagnetise then slowly move away so it decays the magnetic field.

    Can you give us more details on how you make your degausser? Im at my 3rd and they all end up by burning. I have the same issue on a timing gear. Thank you!

    Where can I get one of those demagnetized?

  • @halleffect1
    @halleffect1 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I would never have thought of this. would just assume the current would flow through the head to the block(through the head bolts) into the starter body.
    crazy someone without a degaussing tool would have to change the engine to fix this.
