    I don't think Capricorn Records knew what to do with a heavy acid-rock band at that time, being the established home of southern blues-rock in the 70s. Captain Beyond deserved so much more attention than they got.

      They didn’t know what to do with White Witch either, a glam/acid/jazzy rock band, who came out with their first album in 1972. No marketing or just mismanaged. A great band but no one heard of them.

      @@lisamattern6243 Another great band and a stoner rock gift to my expanding teen musical tastes in the 70s! I'd forgotten that White Witch were on Cap. Cap's bad track record still continues. A great all female rock band local to my area "Big Sister" was signed to Cap 15 years ago and predictably their major label debut did worse for them than their indie releases had.

      If you can rock in 5/4 I ‘m down with it.

    Interesting.
    This was one of the earliest super groups out there.
    Larry Rhino Reinhardt, Iron Butterfly's last guitarist, and Lee Dorman, original bassist for Iron Butterfly, formed Captain Beyond with Deep Purple's original lead singer Rod Evans on vocals, and Bobby Caldwell from the Johnny Winter And band on drums.
    Bobby was Rick Derringer's drummer and co-producer on Rick's All American Boy, too.
    True super group, as this song showcases perfectly.

    Perfect example of how the world goes 'round. These guys are fucking talented and way ahead of their time, yet I've barely even heard of them 'cause for whatever reason the mainstream at the time didn't have room for them, and/or judged them on one small reason they didn't particularly care for about the band as a whole or one individual within the group, and bam 2021, and if they survived with their lives, I'm betting musician wasnt how they earned money. It's a real shame, cause if any band deserved to be doing music for a living its these dudes.

    Not the best sound quality here, but yeah extremely cool to see and quite the Mesmerization Eclipse! .This album was a freakin masterpiece and light years ahead of its time. So much so that most people didn't know what to make of it. I remember hearing it for the first time in a record shop in upstate N.Y.. They had just received it that day and played the whole album with the sound system volume cranked ! Everybody in the place was totally blown away. They sold out their entire stock when I was there and I was second in line to get mine before this opening song ended.

      Nah, Ritchie was right. Rod has a decent voice but his limited range gets old after a while. He doesn’t have the dynamics for a good hard rock singer. He’s more of a crooner.

    • @jackstraw5527
      @jackstraw5527 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      This album is evidence that Rod could go heavy. Some of the heaviest shit from that era in my opinion. Now how much of my that is directly due to Rods contributions are another topic. But, this album to me is heavier than anything by Deep Purple.

      @@towhee89 Bobby Caldwell plays on the entire Rick Derringer album All American Boy from '73 and some Johnny Winter records in very early 70's. Also he plays on Armegeddon's only record from '75. His drum style and prowess are very underappreicated. Rock and Roll Hoochie Koo song has very solid drumming on it!
