    In the course of the European Packraft Meet-up we set out in a strong team to conquer the Soca section (WW4-5) that we have not paddled yet. The big Soca Gorge is breathtakingly beautiful, and blocked to the utmost with big rocks. But don't be distracted by the shimmering turquoise water, because on many passages a not inconsiderable part of the water flows underground between the stones, and siphons lurk around almost every corner.
    This section was certainly one of the most beautiful, but definitely also most dangerous sections that I have paddled so far. I was also able to learn my lessons from the scary swim at the end of the video and will use the experience for future trips.
    Such a trip can certainly only succeed in a strong and well coordinated team!
    Many thanks to Seon (Packraft Europe), Tom (Packraft Explorers), Tin and Konstantin for the great day and your professional approach to the trip.

"Cover and Move".

    Okay. I thought for a long time whether to go to the meetup in 2023. This video definitely convinced me. See you next year on Soca!

      We also had a great time at the D-A-CH Whitewater Meetup just recently. If you are up to whitewater packrafting class 3-4, you should come next year.

    why did you cut out the portage of the rapid Vrisk at about 8:00 ?

    • @current-raft
      @current-raft  ปีที่แล้ว

      Good question. That's a must portage. I can't really tell why I don't have it on camera. I think I just forgot to film it (due to battery life I don't film the entire run, but turn the cam on and off)... I know that Thomas Thaller, who also posted a video of this trip has it on there, in case you want to see how it looks.

    as a kayaker i wonder, what do you get from packrafting, that you can't get from kayaking?
    you clearly have good paddling and river skills, so why not step up your performance with stiffer hull that transfers a lot more performance to the water? whats the special sauce with packrafting?

      That's a good question. Many Packrafters are kayakers as well. As a kayaker you can see it as an addition to get to remote places travel with your boat, use public transportation or your bike for shuttling, no need to have two cars. It's beautiful to combine the paddling with a hike. The newest generation of Packrafts are quite good and give you great performance. It's not a kayak, but it's fun and you can roll, boof, edge and master difficult rivers. And when your done you just pack it to a size of a 30l backpack and move on ;) so I would say that's the thing I love about Packrafting

    was that a roll at 6.54? Good job. I know it's NEVER a good place to swim. Scary stuff at 9.48, well swum/self-rescued (and paddle)!! Is the drop at 11.05 the one you swam just before? Phew!!!
    I wonder whether running it in a PR is a bit more forgiving than a hard shell kayak....a PR has slightly rounder edges which might not catch quite as easily? But it's no easy run for sure!!! Lines are hard to see.
    But: portaging with a PR beats portaging a hardshell boat :-) !!!

    • @current-raft

      Jap that was a quick roll at 6.54.
      The 11.54 is a different drop.
      Packrafts are easier to navigate for beginners, but that can be dangerous as well since the it might lead into heavier waters too quick. In more advanced rivers packrafts are harder to navigate precisely, since they are slower and not so reactive.Furthermore you have a big surface area, which loves to get cought in stoppers.
      Rolling Packrafts is much harder and requires a lot of practice. Check out the last Video of our practice run in Mackleeberg, there is another roll in pushy class IV.
      Portaging a PR is great and always the best choice when in doubt.

      @@current-raft Thanks for the reply :-) -makes a lot of sense. I know Markkleeberg from kayaking there - a nice training ground.

    Ww 4-5? 🤣😂

    • @current-raft
      @current-raft  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, we are always using official ratings for the sections we post. This section is not only rated 4-5, but also quite dangerous due to any siphons. We ran it at very low water, but that doesn't change the grading of the river section.
