This was the song that introduced many of us to Donna Summer. And yes, those moans were played on the radio.

What you have to understand about Donna Summer is that this was her FIRST hit. So while this comes as a surprise to you, this was how we were first introduced to her, and all her other songs were heard through this prism. Eventually you've got to get around to doing her version of "MacArthur Park." Of course when you do, you'll be doing the song a disservice if you don't listen to the 1967 original by Richard Harris, which is a pop music classic. But Donna's disco remake is, in the minds of many,, perhaps her best hit because it shows off all her considerable skills. Kudos to you for finally getting around to "Love to Love You Baby," but in your spare time, you should listen to the 16-minute album version. It's just a long orgasm. We played it at the radio station I worked at in Dallas at the time, and all the old blue hairs in town complained, which just provided us the incentive to play it more. Two other Donna songs you really need to hear are "I Feel Love" and "On the Radio."

I agree. I have tried so many times to suggest the songs we danced to in the clubs not just radio hits. They have missed out on some great music. I am glad they found Love To Love You Baby...it was hysterical. They had to stop the video after 6 minutes. This generation is so innocent in so many ways and will never be able to have the fun we had.

@@truthteller356 -- If they really want to explore some what what we enjoyed on the radio that went right up to the line, I might recommend the following few songs: "I Wanna Do Something Freaky to You" by Leon Heywood. We were one of the very few radio stations to play it back when it was out, and our audience loved it. Then there was "More More More" by the Andrea True Connection, Andrea True being a former porn star. And an album cut we used to play on the radio by Maria Muldaur (better known for her hit "Midnight At the Oasis") that was very naughty called, "It Ain't the Meat, It's the Motion." But as naughty songs go, I've been trying to get Jay and Amber to listen to the very first recording released by Dame Shirley Bassey (who's biggest hit was the theme from "Goldfinger"). Her first hit, released when she was just 19 back in 1956, was called "Burn My Candle." So taudrey, the BBC pulled it off the air, which, of course, only increased demand for it.

She died on May 17, 2012, aged 63, at her home in Naples, Florida, from lung cancer. Being a nonsmoker, she theorized that her cancer had been caused by inhaling toxic fumes and dust from the September 11 attacks in New York City; she was in her apartment near Ground Zero when the attacks occurred. Which is too bad because she had an amazing talent. She is deeply missed.

This is the song that put Donna Summer on the map. We were living in Spain in 1975 and my mom (God bless her for being up with the times) bought this album and blushed at this song. I was only seven years old so kind thought it was funny how she was moaning, not fully appreciating the orgasmic theme of the song. Later Donna, who became "Born Again Christian" refused to perform this trailbreaking hit. She did continue to perform "I Feel Love" though, a hit just a couple years after this that was revolutionary for its techno sound.

I was a hard core Rock Fan back in the day....I detested disco (as a rocker it was my obligation and recreation) BUT I have admit (and didn't hide) that Donna Summer was the exception.
She was an undeniably HUGE talent. Honestly, people have forgotten how great she was. It's not just her voice, not just her beauty but she was just so elegant, capable and genuine. She is so smooth yet there was always a element of grit in her spirit if not in her voice. And her phrasing and her instincts elevate her above all other R&B / disco singers. She was so versatile and confident it was amazing.
Many years later, I learned that she started out her career singing in a Rock and Roll band with her guitar player German husband.

Temporal context is key when listening to this iconic, world-shaking song. Remember, this was way before Madonna, and disco was still a relatively new genre, but this is the song that put Donna Summer on the international map back in 1975. Fun fact: she approached many of her songs as an actress; for this song Donna had the lights turned off in the studio, and she sang it laying on the floor with the mic lowered to her lips. She said she was channeling Marilyn Monroe. I was 6 at the time and, not knowing what those moans and groans meant, i was afraid of this song because I thought some poor lady was getting hurt. But as the 70s wore on I became a big fan of hers. ♥ Madonna, rightly, gets a lot of credit for being a big influence on the female entertainers of today, but there could not have been a Madonna if Donna Summer hadn't blazed a sexy trail for her to lay claim to.

Donna Summer was named "Diva De Tutti Dive" (meaning the first true diva of the modern pop era), by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. For her being Pop Music's first female mega star (selling millions worldwide) and rewriting the Billboard Chart records with her domination at the end of the 70s. When Madonna scored 10 top 5 singles consecutively in 1987, it was Donna record of 9, that she surpassed.

When I was in 3rd grade, my brother and I were allowed to pick one 45 on a trip to the record store. My brother, being 5 years older, knew what he wanted and made his selection. I was not yet versed in popular music so I just grabbed one. “Love to Love You Baby,” was the winner. That evening my brother and I played our 45’s. Not sure my parents ever got over the shock when those notes/moans hit. 😂😂

Here's my Love to Love You Baby story. I have always had a twisted sense of humor. Back in my Air Force days in 89, I had a digital answering machine for my dorm room phone. I'd always come up with goofy impersonations of Reagan, Dirty Harry, etc. Well I had a brainstorm one day and here's what unfolded. I also had a stereo system with a dual cassette tape deck. And through trial and error, I managed to remove her string of "love to love you baby" from her studio extended cut of this song. This left me with about a minute of just Donna's moaning. I then played that back in the background as I recorded on the answering machine.... "oh just too busy to come to the phone right now, call me later when I have more time to talk". It came out great and I soon became the talk of work with my superiors calling my phone all day just to hear that voice message.

I was 11 when this song was released in 1975. Yes, this was played on the radio, but mainly after midnight. I guess the censors thought that kids would be asleep at the time. After midnight, most of us were. But the older kids and adults were constantly talking about this song. So we, younger kids knew about some of the controversy. I vividly remember a friend's question "Mateo, did you hear that nasty song and the lady's words?" I had not. It was my buddy Javi who played the song for me, this record which belonged to his older sister. At the first hearing, I was stunned by the lyrics and delivery. Yet as a choirboy who sang all the time, I quickly acknowledged, appreciated and loved the musicality of Ms. Donna's voice! Instantly, I became a lifelong fan and wanted to hear more songs. Almost 50 years have passed and I still love that voice! I am very pleased that you young folks do too. Check out "Come with me", "Could it be magic" and "Summer fever" and "wasted". I believe you will also like them as well. By the way, this ws Ms. Donna's first Disco hit and the song which returned her to America

the story went that her shy self couldn't record this in a room full of people and they finally made everyone leave. In an interview in 1976, Summer responded to a number of questions that she claimed she'd been asked about the process of recording the song: "Everyone's asking, 'Were you alone in the studio?' Yes, I was alone in the studio. 'Did you touch yourself?' Yes, well, actually I had my hand on my knee.

Great content. This was her first song. They turned the lights off in the studio and said, "Go for it. I can't remember how long she was in the studio, but it was a long time. I don't know if you heard enough is enough. By Donna summer and Barbra Streisand, two powerful voices really going at it. Check it out.

I love "No More Tears (Enough Is Enough)". Two powerful vocalists paired up, meant to be. Barbra actually said that when it came to where they were hitting a long high note that Donna actually fell off the stool and blacked out for a second. Donna said she came to and Barbra was still singing the note and only then realized Donna fell. She ran over to Donna and Donna was fine but they both cracked up about it.

This was Donna Summer's very FIRST hit! I was about 16 years old in high school when it was a big hit and a lot of it went over my little teenage naive Catholic schoolgirl's head. It played a lot on the radio but the long version was only played at certain times like late at night and in the Disco night clubs.

This was such a groundbreaking song as Donna's first hit worldwide..the precursor of Madonna - Justify My Love and George Michael - I Want Your Sex!! This was also the birth of the 12" single extended remix! The head of Casablanca records loved the song so much he asked for an 18 minute version so Donna's producer went into the studio and remixed the song into a 17:55 minute version that took the Discos by storm!!! It was banned by the BBC on UK radio so sales took off and it reached #2 in the US!

Her first big hit after moving to Germany, acting in "Hair", and releasing some flops. With songs like Hot Stuff, Bad Girls, Last Dance, and She Works Hard For the Money, she was the undisputed Queen of Disco from about 1976 to 1980. DJs still end their radio programs and parties with Last Dance.

You can definitely see Donna's musical theater background in this performance. She was in an international tour of HAIR which took her to Germany, which gave her a new name (her German husband's last name was Sommer) and a new collaborator in the great Giorgio Moroder, who co-wrote this song.

This is also a Giorgio Moroder composition, with Moroder and Michael Thatcher on the keys. While Donna Summer was the Queen of Disco, Moroder was the Father of Disco. He is also famous for his movie scores.

Have you heard Love Hangover by Diana Ross? Another mid-70s sensual disco #1 where Diana did some interesting ad libs. I seem to recall she may have had a drink or two before/during the recording session, and she went for it. Great song.

I love Donna Summer and this, her first big hit, did not disappoint! I was 18 when this hit the airwaves! She had an album called FOUR SEASONS OF LOVE. I don’t know if it was a popular as the other albums; but it is truly outstanding. It goes through four seasons of Love..Spring Affair, Summer Fever, Autumn Changes, Winter Melody. The songs should be listened to in order..really teriffic!

Her voice and delivery are very special in this song, but let's talk about her grace and her senuous way of moving. She is an incredible dancer, it's almost like ballet.
