What is the real death toll in Gaza? | Les Roberts | The Big Picture S4E13

  • In 2004, Les Roberts smuggled himself into Iraq as his own government was in the midst of bombing and occupying the country.
His mission was to find out how many civilians had been killed in the devastating US-led invasion, because Western media was refusing to cover it.
When he published his findings in the Lancet Report, that between 100,000 and 600,000 people had been killed - it was dismissed and scorned. Years later, his estimate has been accepted as true.
Inside Iraq, Roberts witnessed the horrors of America’s indiscriminate bombing campaign, and the terror it inflicted on the people of Iraq, and Iraqi children in particular.
Today, he watches as a similar horror is unleashed on children in Gaza.
More than 37,000 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli airstrikes since October 7, including more than 15,000 children.
Many health officials, including Roberts, believe that number is likely conservative, as it doesn’t account for thousands missing or trapped beneath the rubble of their homes, nor those who have died from the spread of disease and famine.
This week on The Big Picture Podcast, we speak with Dr Les Roberts, an epidemiologist and Professor Emeritus at the Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health.
Dr Roberts spent his career documenting death and disease in conflict zones - including in Rwanda, the Congo and Iraq.
You can read his opinion piece on the accuracy of the death toll in Gaza for Time Magazine here: time.com/69096...

They gave us fictional evolution nonsense so no one can say earth's Creator who is Omnipotent and Eternal by His Spirit has promised to intervene. All was foretold by the Prophets about these days. When the mass murderers are requited in the way they have made other people suffer we who see it will know justice has been implemented and no one can say it wasn't deserved.

When you see the human family suffering, especially the children, it changes your brain waves completely and realize the enormous magnitude of world injustice, government corruption, lack of equality and equity.

“We” is too inclusive. Many of us have not lost our humanity. The U.S. corporate media (part of the plutocracy that runs the U.S.) wants us to believe we’ve lost it. I was in the Army, infantry in the U.S. war against the people of Viet Nam. It was ugly. But I still retain my belief in the majority of the people. We need valid, complete information. That’s something the US plutocracy tries to stop

It's absurd to have quibbling about whether it's a genocide. Yes, it IS a genocide. Who says not? The country committing it, and the countries helping to commit it ,by sending bombs and funds- in short, the mass murderers and co mass murderers.
It is absurd to argue about the numbers of deaths, too. It's a distraction from the fact that the US is responsible for the genocide of a helpless, unarmed, trapped, innocent people. Our government/media has a fit if 3 Americans are taken hostage or killed in another country, yet when we are responsible for the deaths of 20,000, which is really 36,000 innocents, there is silence, distraction and denial. This is heinous.
I am disgusted and ashamed of my government.

The US sent thousands of pounds ds of Humanitarian aid to Gaza and a small amount of weapons to Isreal per the Pac they have between countries. The US is not the reason for the continued war. They have stopped weapons until a cease fire is agreed on . Isreal is non compliant. Don't blame the US .. we have our own shit to worry about . I think the reason that Gaza is on the minds of young people and not S. Sudan is because Gaza has been in the news daily since Oct. 7. The world's attention was on the victims of Oct. 7, but then the response was so horrific that fair minded people could not support it. That the US is sending military aid for the genocide in Gaza is another major factor.

His sentence "I'm encouraged that all these angry students who are worked out about Gaza..." makes me very sad because of a few reasons:
    1. Lets be very clear, anyone that really cares for the Palestinians, should not be angry or protesting in order to have a few more trucks per day, as it won't make any difference. What he should be protesting for is giving these poor Palestinians the same right that every other people get during wars... every refugee except of the Palestinians that is... and that is the right to escape a conflict zone into a safe location, where they will not only get any aid without a problem, but they would alao not get bombed, which is at least equally important!
If these students would have only protested against that fact, and demand Egypt to allow Palestinians in, this whole issue of hunger, let alone dead, would have been solved months ago.

The other options are worse: Anarchism (a non(sense) system, Globalism (1 world governance), Regionalism (10 or so geographical blocks), Localism down to Tribalism... What we need is Nationalism where Nationals are in control and we have one International Mutual Defence Pact - military invasion of any nation means the aggressor can be militarily attacked by any nation but no nation is obliged to attack.

Jesus is what matters. Everyone is going to die one day and eternity is the most important thing.
Romans 3:23 "For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God"
Everyone is going to die one day and after death comes a place for all sinners called hell which is eternal torment, but there is no need to fear because we were given a savior 2,000 years ago and his name is Jesus, so trust in Jesus today as your savior from hell. Christ is the only solution to the sin problem in our world and the eternal penalty as a result, which is ultimately part of our nature passed down from adam and eve due to their rebellion against God.
The good news is that there is a savior from the penalty of sin that God the father sent, and that is his only Son Jesus Christ, born of a virgin and without a sin nature like the rest of mankind. The father established the Old Testament law, which was morally perfect to show man's imperfection in attempting to keep it. But Jesus, being perfect, kept the law perfectly, thus fulfilling the law. However, he didnt just fulfill the law, he also died on the cross as a substitute for all mankind's sin. The penalty for sin is death, so God sent his own son to pay the penalty for Mankind so we dont have to go to hell.
The lake of fire is referred to as "eternal/spiritual death" so when Christ died for you and me, he satisfied the father's wrath against our sin. Afterwards, he was buried and then rose again after 3 days, conquering the grave. He did this so that mankind can recieve eternal life as a free gift, all you have to do is believe it was done for you.
The gospel of john states "He that believeth on the son hath everlasting life, but he that believeth NOT the son shall not see life but the wrath of God abideth on him." Believe in the original Greek language translates to "pistueo" which means to entrust, in this case, to entrust ones eternal destination to Christ. Ephesians 2:8-9 "for by grace you have been saved through faith, and not of yourselves it is a GIFT of God. Not of works lest anyman should boast." Simply believe what Christ already did for you to receive eternal life and you are forgiven of every sin. After this, you are given the righteousness of Christ to be just before the father. Romans 4:6 "just as David also speaks of the blessing of the one to whom God counts righteousness apart from works "

📜 Zechariah 12:1A prophecy: The word of the Lord concerning Israel.
The Lord, who stretches out the heavens, who lays the foundation of the earth, and who forms the human spirit within a person, declares:
2“I am going to make Jerusalem a cup that sends all the surrounding peoples reeling. Judah will be besieged as well as Jerusalem.
3 On that day, when all the nations of the earth are gathered against her, I will make Jerusalem an immovable rock for all the nations. All who try to move it will injure themselves.
📜 Matthew 24:19How dreadful it will be in those days for pregnant women and nursing mothers!
📜 Amos 1:6This is what the Lord says:
“For three sins of Gaza, even for four, I will not relent.
Because she took captive whole communities and sold them to Edom,
7I will send fire on the walls of Gaza
    that will consume her fortresses.
8I will destroy the king d of Ashdod and the one who holds the scepter in Ashkelon.
I will turn my hand against Ekron, till the last of the Philistines are eliminated,”

It has been happening in Gaza for months. When children don't have proper nutrition, and the hygiene situation is so bad that disease is spreading rapidly, their little bodies don't have the capacity to recover from the shock of something like a nearby air strike. They get scared, and their hearts stop. It's such a tragedy.

I guess because Israel is extremely belligerent government. UN is useless. ICJ has no enforcement power. As Prof. Mearsheimer says, there is no authority to refrain or punish an heavely armed (by the USA), ruthless and bloodthirsty government. There would be hope if the USA stopped supporting them. But I'm not optimistic at all.

“Under what conditions do I owe a starving child food and when don’t I?”
    -Les Roberts
What a powerful reflection on the conditionality of ethics, responsibility, and compassion.
I believe Mr. Roberts makes a great case that the concept of “nationality” is a root cause of many global problems. How many children die while held captive at the US border in Texas? When so many families leave their country of origin because the US funded and armed coup d’etats all across the Americas, it’s plainly evident that the US cares nothing for non-American people, especially children.

  • @whatreallyisart5898

I think colonialism, racism, and capitalism have a lot to do with the lack of care for starving children in other nations. also distributing food to our neighbors within our country isn't always welcomed, there are lots of folks who see that as bad, who think certain people are just destined to suffering and an early death.
