  • The Mitrofanoff procedure can give your child bladder control and independence by creating a new way for urine to exit their body. The Mitrofanoff procedure, also known as an appendicovesicostomy, can help children with conditions such as spina bifida, neurogenic bladder or bladder exstrophy, may have trouble emptying their bladder.
The Mitrofanoff procedure creates a channel from your child’s bladder to a small hole in their abdomen. When it’s time to urinate, your child, parent or caregiver connects a thin catheter (tube) to the hole and empties their bladder. Children with a Mitrofanoff channel don’t need to wear a bag or diapers. Connecting the catheter to the Mitrofanoff channel is easier and more comfortable than placing a catheter into the urethra.
