Regarding the Uponor Pex A, it's not an aesthetic thing as your plumber said. It was switched from red/blue solid to the white with red/blue writing due to failures in the solid color Pex A. There's a class-action lawsuit against Uponor due to the number of failures. Supposedly, there was a problem with the coloration/baking process to make the solid color red and blue tubing. It's unconfirmed whether it was just a few batches or all of it. There's also discussion if it was due to types of water (high-chlorine), and other factors like temperature, re-circulation pumps, etc.

Recommendation for the ductless head drain- do your best to find a way to gravity drain it, preferably in the most direct way possible. The majority of ductless units with condo pumps I’ve dealt with have issues, often leading to water damage. And if you are doing a condo pump, make sure its safety switch is wired in and figure out how the unit will behave if the pump fails. I love seeing the one drain into the washer drain. That’s a great way to tackle that.

Please check with your plumbing inspector before closing in those condensate drains. In most local codes, condensate water is prohibited from draining into the sanitary sewer drain. Condensate pans can grow molds and harmful bacteria like Legionella and are considered indirect waste drains. They must drain onto the ground outdoors, like a rain spout.

We've had minisplits for over a decade - with condensate pumps, and have had lots of problems with them. You need to keep them clean by running some bleach through a couple of times a year, or gunk will build up on the sensors and won't trigger the pump and the condensate will run into the wall for a long time. Ask me how I know this...

I have done plumbing for 20 years and have seen several broken fittings and even had a cracked PVC pipe get installed. Usually it happens due to something or someone hitting the fitting. A dropped tool or board can crack it easily. Sometimes a pipe or fitting is damaged before installation and it is hard to see a hairline crack in PVC. Make sure you keep your materials in a safe place before installation and do not throw them around especially across concrete

I definitely prefer PEX expansion fitting system over PEX crimp or cinch fitting system but Uponor Pex A has suffered problems from Chlorine injected in Municipal water supplies to combat bacteria, and other organic contaminants. Apparently the inner white surface with undulations in Pex A is subject to corrosive deterioration from even low levels of potable water chlorine content. Uponor has been sued and settled in response to class action lawsuit but they have not changed the way the pipe is made in response to the lawsuit. Guess its a cost v. benefit value judgement for them.
I came across videos by Integrity Repipe videos by Joe Ludlow and followed up with my own research to confirm the undulation litigation actions with Pex A.
In order to continue using pex expansion system I now use Zurn or Sioux Chief who have gotten their Pex B certified for use with expansion pex fittings and end rings with stops under the applicable ASTM F1960 standard. Zurn makes cone expansion heads for the milwaukee expansion tool that better expands the stiffer Pex B from Zurn. The only caveat is that in cold weather you have to get the Pex B pipe up to at least about 70 degrees or a decent room temperature so that when you do the expansion the pipe end doesn't crack and that has been found to solve the problem of cracking which was found to happen by plumbers working in cold weather in the Northeast.
Continued good fortune with the house build and looking forward to more videos.
BTW I have used the ball on chain with hose attached where the ball goes inside the pipe and gets expanded to block the water during a fill up for a leak test on the drainage system. There is no danger of blowing a T fitting threaded cap.

Awesome video! I love getting to see these kind of details that can't easily be seen when a home is finished.
A bit of a tangent, but I noticed that the PVC pipes you showed in the video are made by Charlotte Pipe & Foundry from my home town, Charlotte, North Carolina. I couldn't help but mention that once I noticed; just a bit of home town pride on my part.

Things are looking great! My one fear would be those little condensate lines stopping up and water backing up and running down your walls.

    • @csbarbourv
      @csbarbourv ปีที่แล้ว +2

I thought there had to be either a second backup drain or a cutoff switch if the water gets too high.

The system with the small line is on a condensate pump. Which will have a kill switch. If it backs up or stops working. The system will be turned off to stop producing condensate.

Thanks again for this. Not only has this been a great series. It's also a nice distraction from the crazy reality we are living in. It's much appreciated. I also used the LMNT link you provided as that product has been an important supplement for me the last few months It's a great product 👍

Nice job on explaining the nuances of the plumbing. Never a dull moment with the Stud Pack build. Great job by Jimmy and his crew to get that repaired.

We use PVC for sprinkler installs in $75m condominiums. Had two fittings break right before we turned the building over on an upper floor, caused about $500k worth of damage. PVC is tough but fitting defects can really be a pain.

It looks as though the electrical rough needs a little more work before inspection and before you can insulate, yes?

Carpenters and especially roofers have to think like water but plumbers take it to a whole different level. That plumber certainly knows his trade!

Another great video. Great when a pro shows you how he deals with unexpected consequences. I remember our contractor had mismeasured a window location, when he realized the mistake he changed the framing it about 10 minutes. It would have taken me a few hours! But, like you, he knew what he was doing and knew what parts needed to be changed. Your open and organized wall cavities are great, sad that they need to be insulated.

It wouldn't be a job site if the most random things didn't break right before you had to go home or check off an item from the to-do list. Great fix!

As a 20+ yr plumber. I was telling myself test the plug before the repair....LOL.but I had never seen one break like that either.
    Excellent work and quality
Question : why not point the test tees out to be used as branch clean outs?

As a retired electrician and avid DiY'er, the only thing I "fear" is plumbing work. Your videos give me so much confidence that I can tackle the work and know that even if I make a mistake it can be be fixed without a lot of profanity and thrown tools. Thanks Stud Pack!

2:17 "really cold in the winter".... Paul, come on now. That is a relative phrase. Really cold to use Northerners is double digit ambient temps and -30-60 below 0 wind chills (and people farther North from me are probably thinking, "we'd kill for those warm temperatures", lol). Looks to be slightly below freezing (32 f) for regular real lows in Texas. lol That's hoodie weather for us Northerners

It's pretty insane how far out of my wheelhouse all these Stud Pack videos are, but I eat them up. I've become quite inspired and done lots renovation projects around the house that I would have never dreamed of attempting. I doubt I'll touch plumbing anytime soon but I still enjoyed this video none the less. Thanks for all the great content fellas!

Hey Stud Pack - as always, a pleasure to see a new video hit the webs! :) I really enjoy watching the various trades go in, so this one was especially sweet. Jimmy saved the day it would appear and Paul: Looks like you found another tool you need to put into the closet! LOL Keep it coming you guys! (and ladies!!)
