Hi everyone there is a potion of this video that needs to be corrected , or added please also shut your isolation valve off , this is located in the ground on my video at 2:37 it’s a circle in the ground if you open the cover you can access the valve . Do that before attempting my steps always contact a plumber or professional, my apologies for the mistake
I have had to watch 4 different videos all while fast forwarding to get to the point, this is the best video about winterizing the sprinkler system. THANK YOU. Thank you very much.
Thanks Cynthia for the kind words , hope to see you as subscriber if you like my channel . If you also have any questions please feel free to ask here and as always if I don’t know I’ll do my best to help or lead you to the professionals with advice Best, Robin Jay Kay
Thank you! Yes, stay off the roads as much as possible during the winter! I’ll make sure to do that! I’ll stay indoors sipping hot chocolate and watching some movies! 🍿
Thanks Shady 😁. Great video, I love the way you explain with clarity and straight to the key points. I just went to do this on my sprinkler with your video as guide. Cheers.
Big thank you! Videos like this can make a world of difference and save someone from a really bad day 🙌🏼 first time homeowner with a sprinkler system so im getting it ready for this cold coming through this week. Merry Christmas 🙏🏼
Thank you Sir; I am building a house that comes with this Hunter Sprinkler System and for 2 years in a row now here in Houston we get some serious freeze from time to time during winter. Thanks for the info and tips.
Glad it helped , I’m trying to grow and make more content anything you’d like to see more of on my channel . Also please do subscribe , like and share it always helps Best Robin K
I like your humor. Makes it fun to watch your videos. Thanks for taking the time to put this together. This year I only had one pipe bust so far. An outdoor shower. Totally forgot about it. On my BPV valve, I left the big valves open also after running the sprinkler lines with street valve closed. Not sure if that’s better or worse.
Sorry I read this later on mobile , yes closing the valves in the street or mains will help , there is also the method of complete drain out , if you’re concerned a local licensed plumber will give you the best ideas on your system. Because temps vary by region
Thank you so much! This helped a lot. I was shocked when I tried and the water shot out like a water hose but your video helped me understand that it was normal ! And it helped because my system is the same as yours.
Haha thanks Tony , I’m hoping to make more videos like this , trying to see where my passion leads me . Please do check out my other videos and let me know the content you’d like to see more off Thanks, Robin Jay Kay P.S. if you like my channel please do subscribe
Nice vid, but I think you may be missing a few things. While draining the backflow is good, as that's an expensive part of the system, you didn't address the pvc piping or your sprinkler lines. Blowing out the system with compressed air is the most efficient. My guess is that there is a separate valve shutoff for your irrigation inside your home (garage, basement, crawlspace). You'll want to shut off water there as well. There is likely a spigot/drain after that valve as well where you can gravity drain the water thats between the backflow and your home. My guess is that the other pipe that you addressed is probably an irrigation supply line since I don't think they would put your main water supply above ground. The green cover below it might be a good point to hookup a compressor to blow out the system.
This video was big helpful this winter. thanks a lot. And could you let me know the name of the black cap? something like drain end cap. I can't find it on Amazon and HomeDepot. and where can I get these?
Hi everyone hope you like the video . I do a lot of videos like this and more check out my channel , subscribe and like . It really supports my channel. Happy new year !! Thanks, Robin
That’s a good point , from what plumbers have told me that part shouldn’t freeze up because it’s closer to the ground and because pressure gets drawn elsewhere the water should recede . Also wrap that area up really well and it should keep from cracking . If you are in an area that typically sees below freezing and your supply has cracked please consult a plumbing company for it . Hope the info was helpful and you subscribe to my channel . Please let me know if it worked Thanks Robin K
Check out 1:29 those are the silver balls you gotta tighten and close them First with a screw driver then open the other valves , they won’t spray then let me know if that helps
Hey buddy. That video clip of water shooting out of the top of the preventer valve- that just happened to me right now!! What did you do then ?help !!!!!
Closing any valve above, the ground will trap water in cause the valve itself to crack when it freezes. Do not close the valves above the ground. Shut off the water supply at the valve in the ground.
Wrong, you need to install a tee and valve between the ground shutoff valve and the back flow preventer valve because the water has not been drained out of the brass ball directly below the back flow preventer valve so the water can be drained completely out. It’s the casing on that valve that usually cracks.
An old sheet alone will not prevent freezing , insulating it with foam will, as an additional measure you can then wrap that in an old sheet to add a layer
@@Robinsight perhaps I missed the part where you said more than just a sheet. I truly not trying to disrespectful. But you might want to caveat your comments with locations that do not get much below freezing temperatures. There is no way that will keep your pipes from freezing in truly cold temperatures.
An old sheet would do nothing where I live. No form of insulation is adequate to prevent freezing. Completely remove all water, probably by compressed air or damage will occur.
Very true it’s worked for me but I’m in southwest Texas we don’t really have a lot of freezing here . But for other areas and brutal winters you’re absolutely right the compressor will remove it all Thanks Robin
Fair enough, and true on all accounts, I have also come across numerous systems without isolation valves, and it’s not fair on my part to make the comment I did without mentioning that, my apologies. I do however recommend to my clients that they have one installed as soon as they can, and I give them an estimate on the spot. Happy New Year.
You’re not the first to say this but in my city , this is actually in code , don’t want to outright say where I am, but context should tell you. The whole thing was installed by a master plumber and company
I’m not sure about sprinkler school or where you can attend but tell that to the master plumber that advised me to do this .you’re not the first bud Cheers Robin
Lol it wasn’t for COVID ,I didn’t have anything to cover my face from the cold. My face went numb . Hope the Video was good and you liked my content ? Please subscribe for mask-less vids 😂 Thanks Robin K

I agree. Straight to the point.

Nice concise explanation, lot of these other guys are taking way too long to explain it

Slim, this is the only video I’ve found that was actually useful. Thanks.

How do you drain the water in the above-ground line below your supply shut-off to keep that section of line from cracking?

What order do we turn it back on? I started turning valves and water started coming out and got scared
The screws at the bottom or the silver balls turn those first then you can turn the water back on and it won’t spray
Check out 1:29 those are the silver balls you gotta tighten and close them
First with a screw driver then open the other valves , they won’t spray then let me know if that helps
Hey buddy. That video clip of water shooting out of the top of the preventer valve- that just happened to me right now!! What did you do then ?help !!!!!
Sorry my late reply honestly shut off the water main, the plumbers will be able to get a new back flow in
Closing any valve above, the ground will trap water in cause the valve itself to crack when it freezes. Do not close the valves above the ground. Shut off the water supply at the valve in the ground.
Fair points I’ll check it thanks
Are you the back yard bandito😊
Lol
Nice 👍👍👍👍
Wrong, you need to install a tee and valve between the ground shutoff valve and the back flow preventer valve because the water has not been drained out of the brass ball directly below the back flow preventer valve so the water can be drained completely out. It’s the casing on that valve that usually cracks.
You’re right there is a valve at the bottom , do t know if this is up to local code will need to check
I feel like I am missing something. Are you suggesting wrapping your pipes in an old sheet will prevent your them from freezing?
Yes you are , that isn’t what I’m suggesting.
@@Robinsight so if it’s not to prevent freezing. What is the purpose of wrapping the pipes?
An old sheet alone will not prevent freezing , insulating it with foam will, as an additional measure you can then wrap that in an old sheet to add a layer
@@Robinsight perhaps I missed the part where you said more than just a sheet. I truly not trying to disrespectful. But you might want to caveat your comments with locations that do not get much below freezing temperatures. There is no way that will keep your pipes from freezing in truly cold temperatures.
No offense taken , good points
Need to blow your lines out also or you'll have bigger problems digging up bursted lines.
Correct ,That is the most complete way of doing things .
Had that shit happened to us to
Sorry that happened hope all is well

U funny men
Thanks
Step 1 : Shut off the isolation valve. 🙄
If they have one. Older systems may not.
Actually may have seen the hatch in the beginning after I rewatched.
Y’all are both right , in my case I do have one some don’t
Fair enough, and true on all accounts, I have also come across numerous systems without isolation valves, and it’s not fair on my part to make the comment I did without mentioning that, my apologies. I do however recommend to my clients that they have one installed as soon as they can, and I give them an estimate on the spot. Happy New Year.
What city do you live in?
Using PVC above ground as main lines is non-compliant/ out of code.
There's so many things wrong with your procedures buddy.
You’re not the first to say this but in my city , this is actually in code , don’t want to outright say where I am, but context should tell you. The whole thing was installed by a master plumber and company
Go back to sprinkler school, this is 100% wrong. Please don’t do this!
I’m not sure about sprinkler school or where you can attend but tell that to the master plumber that advised me to do this .you’re not the first bud
Cheers
Robin
To much camera movement!
Sorry about that hope you didn’t get dizzy , I don’t have a go pro and I’m not using a stabilizer or stand
Why are you wearing a mask, outside, by yourself?
Lol it wasn’t for COVID ,I didn’t have anything to cover my face from the cold. My face went numb . Hope the Video was good and you liked my content ?
Please subscribe for mask-less vids 😂
Thanks

what happens if it rains on your old sheet? water will freeze it up. will that still help the system?
Yes that can happen in this case it would be best to use insulation rated for outdoors
