As a middle class kid growing up in the 80s we had no access to this kind of info Nik..only the rich kids could afford coaching. This is top level serve coaching that anyone in the world can access and learn from. Thanks very much for this content, I will be helping at my son's highschool team in the spring and will show the boys your coaching videos.
This is just gold for any teacher-student relationship, not just for tennis or serving. Felipe is obsessing over a part that Nik is indifferent to. And we can see that there is no problem there. What is happening in Felipe's head is not happening in reality. But it's not helpful to continue pointing that out because then the student feels misunderstood or even not listened to. So as a teacher, you have to make the connection to the student's worry without confirming it wholesale and then use the energy/motivation there to bring it to the points that matter. Nik is doing magnificent here by reformulating the reality of feeling uncomfortable into the reality of the technical problem.
I love the energy here with the information transfer. Phillipé is obviously trying his hardest to relay his thoughts with a language he doesn't speak fluently and ma man Nik with his abundance of experience and knowledge uses refined english to make his points observed. The magic happens when both parties keep trying through respect and listening to each other over and over again. What a fantastic experience this was for me watching this and seeing the glorious progress. Thank you Nik. We are all proud of you ma man. Cheers! M
Great match. Coach Nik has gotten my attention, as I struggle with returning to the game, after a 40 years hiatus. In the mean time, MTB, moto and sport bike track days, took some surgical repairs. My game was never as intense as this match, but it's inspiring to watch. Well played by both student, and master. Uncommon insight into the psychology and self talk of some high level tennis competition.
20:17 exactly what happened to me with my 2nd serve. Focused on too many things and stopped keeping my body sideways. Ive been back on track with it for the past couple of months
I think I do the same with the racquet going over my head. I wonder if it's not something I've picked up watching other coaches on TH-cam (not gonna drop names). I've heard so many advices about 'knocking the birthday hat over your head' or how the racquet drop is some kind of circular motion. I felt all confused in my motion. But now thanks to Nik, I've learned better cues to focus on when I work on my serve.👍🏻
This was a amazing lesson Coach, sorry I haven’t been on the channel for a little bit, but I hurt my back and I know if I watch your videos I will try to hurry up to get back on the court. So I have learned some new stretches for my back and I will post them later on my channel. I just turned 52 my friend and I am feeling better and I am working hard and using your videos to get back in shape so I can get my surgery done. I hope you had an awesome Christmas and may GOD bless you and may GOD give you the best Year ever! By the way I am waiting on my T-shirt I ordered from you and I look forward to sporting on my channel and letting my friends and family know that you are doing a fantastic job teaching people! Thank you Nick I truly appreciate your hard work and your dedication to the game of tennis my friend.
I'm 45 and I've starting deadlifting and squatting at the gym couple times a week and it has improved my back and knees. I no longer need any knee sleeve. And I can squat down by the net for my partners serve in doubles no problem. We play i-formation often. Try some barbell work in the gym once you are recovered.
@@K4R3N thank you, I will try that, I usually do cardio and the machines, Thank you for the advice and I will definitely try it out and let you know how it works out on my channel! I will share the information with my friends and family on my channel! I had another person tell me about this type of exercise to help back out! I am disabled so I am trying to get back into shape so I can have my surgery done on my stomach. I started a tennis channel to help out disabled people and people who are having health issues. Thanks to Coach Nick, Krue, and Winston Wu channel, I lost 30 pounds and I am training to compete again, I realize I will probably not get back up to the 5.5 level anymore because of age and health, but I will definitely have fun at any level I am rated! It’s been over 20 years since I played in a tournament! I won the Light Up the Shores back in 95-96, 98. I love playing on the clay! It’s so much fun and it’s cool that nobody ever gets a clean bounce, and I laugh when people complain about the ball bouncing weird! I think it’s cool and it’s easier on my body! But unfortunately right now I have to play on the hard courts and it’s brutal after a few days of playing on it! Well I appreciate the advice and suggestions, Have a Happy New Year my friend.
@shaunsweeney-kubach71 I am close to 45 as well, and yoga (esp. the hold poses) have immensely helped keep my back and knee up to it. I don't need knee support any more. (I actually have a partially torn ligament as well). And make sure you follow Nick's guidances on warm up and cool down. Once you have somewhat recovered, try yoga to keep the strength to keep the tennis going. Good luck!
In the beginning of the video I noticed Filipe had an Awkward racquet take back going into the trophy pose. He appeared off balanced when he raises the racquet and he “pauses” . The racquet take back isn’t smooth and continuous as it should be. I was wondering what he was doing incorrectly . Further on as I watched ,, you addressed this issue. You’re absolutely correct! The way he raised the racquet - over and above his head instead of taking it back behind him - was the problem!!
Great serving video! I felt like Felipe was speaking out loud what many of us are thinking when practicing serves by ourselves. This video really highlights the importance of a coach being present to watch and give immediate accurate feedback. Felipe felt huge differences in his take back on his serve but Nik and the video said it looked pretty much the same 😅 Felipe did say that he was having problems seeing his racquet on the take back and losing control of it. Might try a Alcaraz or even Roddick motion to keep the racquet more in front of the head so Felipe sees it longer. Keep it up guys, awesome progress and loving the grind from you both!
Man, being Felipe must be the happiest thing in the (tennis-)world. So many hours of practice with Nik. Nik, you should really educate some coaches so that more players can benefit from your methods.
One other thing Nick, I have a little trick I do before I serve, I lower the net by 2 feet and that seems to work out well for me. No more double faults! Then when my opponent serves I raise the net 3 feet and that seems to be helping me break serve. You have to be quick to do this or people will stop you! People get upset over the littlest things my friend! Oh course I am joking, but it would be a great prank!
I recently decided to start playing tennis just for fun, never tried it before and know very (very) little about the sport. Decided to watch a couple videos and came across this channel. When I clicked on this video and saw the length, I was prepared to skip to the end but was pleasantly surprised by how FASCINATING it is. Couldn't stop watching. Bravo!
Meeenn, you are a great coach, Nick! I surely hope to get to 275 years old based on CRISPR and develop a kick serve like this, finally. Coz this feel the only way.
Ways to get more safety on the second serve -aim for the middle of the box -hit the ball high over the net and shorter in the box * contact the ball much higher * throw the ball more inside
I still wasn’t satisfied with my serve …. miss-hitting, double-faulting, inconsistent ball placement, awkward body motion, and timing! So I put in 2.5 hours last night at the club serving 300 balls!! I made the beginning simpler. Took out the huge back sway with the body to create the J serve. It was unnecessary. Now ,, the racquet is already down by the side of my body open face. From there,, I raise it 1-2 inches for that initial momentum to bring the racquet up,, then TOSS THE BALL as I slide the right foot , bend the knees , and “sit” …. putting most of my weight on the left leg for that trophy pose. Simplicity!! It was here that I discovered all the problems and fixed them - “ one at a time” - and made the corrections as I went along …. that’s why it took so long. For example, I couldn’t figure out why the ball was hitting the top of the net . It was exasperating. I spent a good 15 minutes just trying to figure it out serving ball after ball. Then I saw it !!! Yayyyy😀. My damn wrist was going down instead of going upward and out ! Voilá ! Issue corrected . After solving this problem, everything started to fall into place and correct themselves. For the kick serve, immediately turn the wrist so the palm of the hand is facing right . For the slice serve , turn the wrist in the opposite direction. For the extreme angled slice , turn the upper body first before the slice. Then I incorporated the jump into the serve ! A very good session !! End
I'm thinking when Felipe (or any student) says he needs to think about how he does sth (in Felipe's case, how he bring his arm up; around the 21 minute mark), it could be worthwhile to show him a few video clips of how he does it, or just did it a moment ago? For the fact that even if in his mind he seems confused about it and is saying he "needs to think" how he does it, on execution it looks fine (to me). Seemingly went ok naturally/intuitively when he just let the body/arm flow.
We did hours of video analysis and studying footage. We worked 50+ hours in 10 days. I’m not showing the training in it’s entirety or it would be unwatchable.
huge lag and a low toss - Kyrgios. but he is a freak of nature when it comes to serve. back in the day - Turner, he use to hit the ball on the rise, nobody is doing it nowadays. anyway, what I like about this video is to put an emphases on serve/return quality if you want to play and potentially win matches. Because on a recreational level it is all about hitting forehands and backhands and maybe some volleys, enjoying the long rallies, but when it comes to matches - serve/return is what make the difference. and not making too many UE. I know what this guy is talking about, and it is an easy fix for him. Keep the racket face closed until the drop. because what he does - he starts well, then just before the drop he opens and that's it - erasing everything before that. result is - most common WTA serve. what Filipe is showing (when not serving) is exactly what he needs to do, he just can't execute. Of course that is not the only thing - there is a body rotation, elbow/ shoulder stretch, legs drive..., but his main problem is opening the wrist just before the drop - that's the killer. at about 36min into a video it was sooo obvious. this is how you hit a pancake serve. you open your racket face before the drop, and there is no way you can come back from it. You can still hit a serve, but never a good serve, no matter what you do afterwards.
How one holds the ball (with your fingers) and where it starts and tossed from is very important. For greater toss consistency, the ball starts near my left thigh , the wrist bent with my fingers pointing towards my body. As the left arm moves up , the wrist turns naturally throwing the ball upward perfect distance and height placement every time!
I was wondering why I initially felt his service motion was strange. And I realized it’s cause he brings his racket over his head during the trophy position. I don’t think I’ve seen that many tennis players do this type of motion.

Why is he grunting?? He’s just serving and not running around. He shouldn’t be exhausted. That tells me that he’s not relaxed and muscling his serve. The serve in my opinion shouldn’t be forced . It should be effortless and dynamic. Actually,, that’s true for everything … forehand, volley etc .
