They would be a breath of fresh air for sure compared to what is currently happening on the show. However, I would have thought the same about Sheila a few years ago, and somehow she has been reduced to a shadow of her former self on the current show. I have little hope that the same wouldn't happen to Thorne and Macy.

However, if they were to do that, they would also need to bring back Jeff Trachta as Thorne, as opposed to Windsor Harmon or the anti-vaxxer guy who came after him. Bobbie Eakes and Windsor Harmon didn't have the chemistry to make Macy and Thorne a couple to really root for, and I doubt she would have the right chemistry with the other guy either. They could bring back Bobbie and Jeff and have a triangle involving them and Deacon, who Macy married before she died. Of course, her and Thorne would find their way back to one another through music.
This has to be one of my favorite episode s with sally and eric. Haha the way Eric fixed the guys collar on his shirt was funny. I'm downloading this song now. Poor macy I hope she pulls through.

Once upon a time the B&B was a MASTERPIECE with investment and thought, with endless creativity (for better or for worse) exciting scenes, interesting places that span the world, impressive fashion shows, a fashion house with a world name, speak fashion, breathe fashion🌟💃💫🌹 Today B&B is sad from what we will become, it really insults what it used to be, everything is miserable and boring, repeats itself, you can't guess that they deal with fashion, they don't talk fashion, only occasionally someone there scribbles in the corner, the players are tired, they have no passion for the game and certainly not for fashion or clothes, just moving from one tragedy to the next... very very boring and sad....
I stopped watching after Darlene passed. Everyone connected to Sally was gone. It also annoyed me that the fans didn't have the opportunity to really mourn her. I get what the show was trying to do, but she deserved more than a quick 2 minute tribute at the end of an episode.

I love how Darlene Conley absolutely cannot _sing_ in the conventional sense, and still she manages to pull it off convincingly thanks to her huge stage presence (and her _fabulous_ speaking voice).
So fitting that Sally can't sing (but puts on a show anyway) and Eric _can_ sing. It underscores their different strengths in the fashion industry: he's always been the talented/artistic one while Sally has a lot of moxie and hustle.
Also their Album "Bold and Beautiful Duets" sells over 1 millions copies in Europe they are very successful and also they have another album called Duets II we needs Duets III
True fans might be happy to see and hear the parents of their beloved _stars_ sing. If you are not that much of a fan yet, you might not have been that excited about Sally's act. Unlike Eric, Sally isn't shown to have such a talent. Eric and Sally saved the show, but some fans might have gotten worried how many family members still would take over the stage before Macy and Thorne would final start their show. 😂

Maybe the Macy and Thorne show, so well deserved, distracted us today, but Ridge againg gave to Brooke one of his strange compliments as the only woman "alive" who can captivate him.

Since the Thorne recast, the show has done a great job in writing in Jeff Trachta's singing talent (Macy and Thorne often starting singing together even before the show wrote them to consider and start a singing career). But I still can't imagine Caroline's husband Thorne as someone who would start to sing for his wife and who would have wanted to take over the stage.
Ridge to Brooke- "There isn't a woman alive who could captive me as much as you." Key word: ALIVE. Meaning Taylor and Caroline could still captivate him more 😆😀
Brooke talking about Thorne and Macy "singing their _little_ hearts out" subtly but firmly establishes that Brooke, as Mrs Ridge Forrester, is now above Thorne and Macy in the Forrester family hierarchy. And the way she is poking fun at Eric's singing also indicates her position of power in relation to him (because she is the one who divorced him, and she has since taken over his company).
Also I noted there's front page news about some random foreign prince getting married, but no news about the concert of LA born and bred Thorne, son of a world famous fashion designer lol Poor Thorne... 😂
Oh, how I "missed" that heavy breathing and sighs of Brooke with her micky mouse-voice!😂 Acting jealous of Taylor already and talking of connection again .....Ridge, the other woman that has also captivated you, is actually alive too, it's blue eyed Taylor/ Leila. 😅 Got to love Sally. Never a fan of Eric, he's a wimp, but his singing isn't that bad. Love Macy and Thorne together, they have more chemistry than boring and shallow Bridge will ever have, in my opinion .
I've just watched a preview from the 2013 show, EP 111 with Taylor and Brooke and it gives me the good old vibes about the way Taylor used to talk to Brooke. If only the writer had kept the smug Taylor vs the shameless Brooke! So funny...
*The Rotterdam dream* This episode really does feel like part of a dream sequence (to continue *Nick's* observation about the Rotterdam trip as a "dream" in episode 1928) or an alternate reality where the Forresters and the Spectras get along, and Thorne and Macy live happily ever after. It relates back to the Romeo and Juliet narrative that the show reminded us of a few episodes ago, and kind of fills the same function as the utopian dream sequence in the musical West Side Story (the song _Somewhere),_ which of course is also a version of Romeo and Juliet. Sally and Eric putting their differences aside to help Thorne and Macy by stepping in to entertain the audience so the concert won't be cancelled, and managing to do this entirely unprepared and unrehearsed, also shows that (like we have seen before in Thorne and Macy's storyline) the rules of music drama apply here, rather than the rules of conventional drama - which in itself means that we are now in a different type of reality from the rest of the show, further reinforcing the dreamlike quality. These "rules of music drama" are also what make it possible for Thorne and Macy to skip the rehearsal, and for Macy to sing at all in spite of her painful throat tumor. The symbolism of that final image of Thorne and Macy walking "into the light" hand in hand, while their parents are embracing backstage after having worked together to save their children's careers, is also a nice touch that adds to the feeling that the Rotterdam concert is a "dream come true". However, we know that this dream can't last - it exists only that one night in Rotterdam, and a much more complicated and conflicted reality awaits these four characters back in LA. This "moment of perfection and harmony" between the Spectras and the Forresters is _not entirely real._ And both Spectra women know this, because they are the ones keeping the illusion-shattering secrets, while the Forrester men are oblivious. Eric thinks he can be friends with Sally but Sally knows that will no longer be possible once he finds out about her involvement in Dylan's trial. Thorne thinks he and Macy are at the start of a long and successful singing career but Macy knows this may well be their last concert because of her illness. But this sense that the Rotterdam concert is an exception, a colorful parenthesis, a fleeting moment where dreams come true and normal rules don't apply, only adds to its magic. B&B has never really done anything quite like this before or since.
This is such a smart, thoughtful, well-written take. Bravo! You're right I can't think of any other prior examples of B&B doing this. Y&R had Danny Romalotti concerts but those didn't have these kinds of story dynamics.
This is a great essay Annie! You explicated the dream sequence/alternate reality aspects very well! I would just add that while we don't have another example _exactly_ like this, there are two _similar_ sequences in B&B history and both pertain to Sheila: 1) *Sheila's Nightmare:* The other extended dream sequence in B&B history of course was Sheila’s fashion show nightmare but that was an actual dream whereas the Rotterdam concert is more dream-like. But just as Rotterdam gave the viewer an alternate reality where Thorne and Macy and their warring houses are finally happily united, Sheila’s nightmare gave us an alternate reality where she finally got her comeuppance. Thus both involve a kind of audience catharsis that cannot be offered by the “real” show because then the drama would be over. And both sequences involve a stage, music, an audience, and a “Will the show go on?” question hanging over it with Macy’s illness and Sheila’s fight in the hotel with Lauren threatening to derail the concert/fashion show. And Thorne and Macy’s wedding will eventually be interrupted by the co p s and the horror of Ivana’s murder just as Sheila’s wedding gown moment onstage was interrupted by the co p s and the horror of what she did in Genoa City. 2) *The Catalina Trip:* Like Rotterdam, it took the characters away from LA and placed them in an almost fantasy setting. Scott makes a sacrifice for Sheila just as Macy sacrifices her health for Thorne and both trips involve a close-call that threatened to blow everything up (Macy and Thorne not appearing onstage/Lauren introducing Scott to Eric’s wife in the hotel lobby) but the close-call is avoided by stalling and grace (Sally and Eric taking the stage/Scott pretending not to know Sheila). And there is a sense of possibility and new relationships coming out of both trips: Eric and Sheila seem to repair their marriage just as Eric and Sally seem to repair their professional rivalry. But then upon returning home, reality sets in and Eric and Sheila’s marriage is quickly in turmoil again just as Eric and Sally are quickly on opposing sides of the Jessica storyline

How did I miss this?"). And though I agree that there are clear similarities, what sets Rotterdam apart in my mind from those two storylines is its _scale._ It's quite a unique thing in the history of B&B to have a live audience of 10 000 people effectively being treated in the writing as _a character_ with a kind of "hive mind". They are not just passive viewers/listeners, but actually interact with the main characters and help shape their fate, in a way that can be both threatening and supportive. For example, when Sally Spectra enters the stage and introduces herself, the audience reacts with moderate enthusiasm as if they _don't know who she is,_ and only starts cheering when she mentions that she is Macy's mother. It is the audience reaction, not the camera, that tells us when Eric has arrived on stage, and later confirms to us that Eric has succeeded in buying time for Thorne and Macy. The sounds of the audience in the background, and their presence on the monitor, add to the pressure Macy is feeling. And the concert's success is largely measured by the audience reactions, and the main characters commenting on those reactions (for example when the audience starts singing along, waving and dancing). It's a unique way of using footage from real life but shaping it in a way to advance a fictional plot.

There's the usual "show within a show" format that we normally see on B&B with the fashion shows. But here we also have Thorne and Macy replicating the musical careers of Jeff and Bobbie on a fictional TV show but in a dream-like sequence that seems to occur in a separate state from the "reality" of the fictional TV show yet also including _a real life audience at a real life concert_ into this fantasy. 🤯🤯

Yes it was!! I’m from Holland and i was there that night! A magical night i’ll never forget. So happy and excited as a 13 year old girl😊. They where so great. Such a special night.
Eric (John McCook) wasn't bad🎤🎤. I think I want a Thorne and Eric duet now👏👏. Ridge (Ronn Moss) can sing too!! The Forrester men should've started a group😆!! If Ridge had gone to Rotterdam....he definitely would have gone on stage!! Macy never EVER tells people what's going on with her...I hope her voice pulls through🤞🤞
If there were none of these filler Bridge scenes, this would have been the perfect episode. I would trade in Bridge time for more of Darlene Conley's and John McCook's singing. What a missed opportunity for them to do a duet.

It's so funny how apparently they have got all 10 000 people in the stadium to play along, because when Darlene Conley introduces herself as Sally Spectra, their reaction is like "Sally who?" and then when she says she's Macy's mother, the crowd cheers.
I said something similar. Very very devoted fans might be happy to watch and learn more about family members of their beloved stars (the ones who read every gossip, collect all kind of fan articles (T-shirts, coffee mugs....). But normally I go to a concert to just hear the singer and I am not interested to have to hear someone who can't sing that well, who is not a singer (eg. Sally here).
So who all performed in this concert? I know it was a real concert in that country called “The Bold and the Beautiful Sing”. And I know Darlene Connelly, Bobbi Eakes, Jeff Trachta, John McCook all performed in the show. But I believe Kimberlin Brown was there as well and performed, along with some of the other cast members. They just didn’t feature all of them in the storyline obviously because it wouldn’t have made sense storyline wise, having Eric and Sheila on stage performing songs together LOL.
And the show currently keeps writing Brooke as unintentionally playing *good fairy* for TRIDGE by setting Ridge up in ways that would make it possible for Ridge to meet his wife, realize that Taylor is not dead - but Ridge is too dumb for that: - today Brooke showing Ridge the article about Omar and Layla that features a big photo of Layla - before: pushing for BRIDGE to take Omar's invitation and visit Omar's palace pushing to stay longer at the palace encouraging Ridge to explore the palace and Layla's room

Brooke talking about Thorne and Macy "singing their _little_ hearts out" subtly but firmly establishes that Brooke, as Mrs Ridge Forrester, is now above Thorne and Macy in the Forrester family hierarchy.
And the way she is poking fun at Eric's singing also indicates her position of power in relation to him (because she is the one who divorced him, and she has since taken over his company).

I've just watched a preview from the 2013 show, EP 111 with Taylor and Brooke and it gives me the good old vibes about the way Taylor used to talk to Brooke. If only the writer had kept the smug Taylor vs the shameless Brooke! So funny...

*The Rotterdam dream*
This episode really does feel like part of a dream sequence (to continue *Nick's* observation about the Rotterdam trip as a "dream" in episode 1928) or an alternate reality where the Forresters and the Spectras get along, and Thorne and Macy live happily ever after. It relates back to the Romeo and Juliet narrative that the show reminded us of a few episodes ago, and kind of fills the same function as the utopian dream sequence in the musical West Side Story (the song _Somewhere),_ which of course is also a version of Romeo and Juliet.
Sally and Eric putting their differences aside to help Thorne and Macy by stepping in to entertain the audience so the concert won't be cancelled, and managing to do this entirely unprepared and unrehearsed, also shows that (like we have seen before in Thorne and Macy's storyline) the rules of music drama apply here, rather than the rules of conventional drama - which in itself means that we are now in a different type of reality from the rest of the show, further reinforcing the dreamlike quality. These "rules of music drama" are also what make it possible for Thorne and Macy to skip the rehearsal, and for Macy to sing at all in spite of her painful throat tumor.
The symbolism of that final image of Thorne and Macy walking "into the light" hand in hand, while their parents are embracing backstage after having worked together to save their children's careers, is also a nice touch that adds to the feeling that the Rotterdam concert is a "dream come true".
However, we know that this dream can't last - it exists only that one night in Rotterdam, and a much more complicated and conflicted reality awaits these four characters back in LA. This "moment of perfection and harmony" between the Spectras and the Forresters is _not entirely real._ And both Spectra women know this, because they are the ones keeping the illusion-shattering secrets, while the Forrester men are oblivious. Eric thinks he can be friends with Sally but Sally knows that will no longer be possible once he finds out about her involvement in Dylan's trial. Thorne thinks he and Macy are at the start of a long and successful singing career but Macy knows this may well be their last concert because of her illness.
But this sense that the Rotterdam concert is an exception, a colorful parenthesis, a fleeting moment where dreams come true and normal rules don't apply, only adds to its magic. B&B has never really done anything quite like this before or since.
This is such a smart, thoughtful, well-written take. Bravo! You're right I can't think of any other prior examples of B&B doing this. Y&R had Danny Romalotti concerts but those didn't have these kinds of story dynamics.
This is a great essay Annie! You explicated the dream sequence/alternate reality aspects very well! I would just add that while we don't have another example _exactly_ like this, there are two _similar_ sequences in B&B history and both pertain to Sheila:
1) *Sheila's Nightmare:* The other extended dream sequence in B&B history of course was Sheila’s fashion show nightmare but that was an actual dream whereas the Rotterdam concert is more dream-like. But just as Rotterdam gave the viewer an alternate reality where Thorne and Macy and their warring houses are finally happily united, Sheila’s nightmare gave us an alternate reality where she finally got her comeuppance. Thus both involve a kind of audience catharsis that cannot be offered by the “real” show because then the drama would be over. And both sequences involve a stage, music, an audience, and a “Will the show go on?” question hanging over it with Macy’s illness and Sheila’s fight in the hotel with Lauren threatening to derail the concert/fashion show. And Thorne and Macy’s wedding will eventually be interrupted by the co p s and the horror of Ivana’s murder just as Sheila’s wedding gown moment onstage was interrupted by the co p s and the horror of what she did in Genoa City.
2) *The Catalina Trip:* Like Rotterdam, it took the characters away from LA and placed them in an almost fantasy setting. Scott makes a sacrifice for Sheila just as Macy sacrifices her health for Thorne and both trips involve a close-call that threatened to blow everything up (Macy and Thorne not appearing onstage/Lauren introducing Scott to Eric’s wife in the hotel lobby) but the close-call is avoided by stalling and grace (Sally and Eric taking the stage/Scott pretending not to know Sheila). And there is a sense of possibility and new relationships coming out of both trips: Eric and Sheila seem to repair their marriage just as Eric and Sally seem to repair their professional rivalry. But then upon returning home, reality sets in and Eric and Sheila’s marriage is quickly in turmoil again just as Eric and Sally are quickly on opposing sides of the Jessica storyline

You are so right about the similarities between these scenarios and the Rotterdam concert on a structural level, even though these parallels are not immediately apparent due to the superficial differences (I never thought to make those connections before you pointed them out, but reading your post I was like "Yes! How did I miss this?").
And though I agree that there are clear similarities, what sets Rotterdam apart in my mind from those two storylines is its _scale._ It's quite a unique thing in the history of B&B to have a live audience of 10 000 people effectively being treated in the writing as _a character_ with a kind of "hive mind". They are not just passive viewers/listeners, but actually interact with the main characters and help shape their fate, in a way that can be both threatening and supportive. For example, when Sally Spectra enters the stage and introduces herself, the audience reacts with moderate enthusiasm as if they _don't know who she is,_ and only starts cheering when she mentions that she is Macy's mother. It is the audience reaction, not the camera, that tells us when Eric has arrived on stage, and later confirms to us that Eric has succeeded in buying time for Thorne and Macy. The sounds of the audience in the background, and their presence on the monitor, add to the pressure Macy is feeling. And the concert's success is largely measured by the audience reactions, and the main characters commenting on those reactions (for example when the audience starts singing along, waving and dancing). It's a unique way of using footage from real life but shaping it in a way to advance a fictional plot.

@@annieo6527 You're right! The sheer scale of this and the fact that it included real life concert footage makes it unique. There are so many meta layers here. There's the usual "show within a show" format that we normally see on B&B with the fashion shows. But here we also have Thorne and Macy replicating the musical careers of Jeff and Bobbie on a fictional TV show but in a dream-like sequence that seems to occur in a separate state from the "reality" of the fictional TV show yet also including _a real life audience at a real life concert_ into this fantasy. 🤯🤯

Sally's great but I would not be happy if I went to a Beyonce concert and her mom who makes those hideous jeans got up onstage to sing.
It's so funny how apparently they have got all 10 000 people in the stadium to play along, because when Darlene Conley introduces herself as Sally Spectra, their reaction is like "Sally who?" and then when she says she's Macy's mother, the crowd cheers.
I said something similar. Very very devoted fans might be happy to watch and learn more about family members of their beloved stars (the ones who read every gossip, collect all kind of fan articles (T-shirts, coffee mugs....).
But normally I go to a concert to just hear the singer and I am not interested to have to hear someone who can't sing that well, who is not a singer (eg. Sally here).

So who all performed in this concert? I know it was a real concert in that country called “The Bold and the Beautiful Sing”. And I know Darlene Connelly, Bobbi Eakes, Jeff Trachta, John McCook all performed in the show. But I believe Kimberlin Brown was there as well and performed, along with some of the other cast members. They just didn’t feature all of them in the storyline obviously because it wouldn’t have made sense storyline wise, having Eric and Sheila on stage performing songs together LOL.
Don’t remember kimberlin being on there, I watched it a lot on vhs.

- before:
pushing for BRIDGE to take Omar's invitation and visit Omar's palace
pushing to stay longer at the palace
encouraging Ridge to explore the palace and Layla's room
