  • Napa Valley California has many things to do but the big question is where to stay. We show you 2 places in Northern Napa Valley in Calistoga California. The first is a value place to stay and the second luxurious place. Calistoga is a charming little town with the famous Castello di Amorosa Napa Valley Castle Winery minutes away and many charming shops and restaraunts.
Bothe Napa Valley State Park is the best value place to stay in all of Napa Valley (unless you're on the couch of a relative!). The park has coast redwoods and Douglas fir making a refuge from the Napa Valley summertime heat. The 1,900 acre park features campsites, yurts, hiking trails and a swimming pool. The park's swimming pool is all that remains from a former hotel on the adjacent highway that operated from 1929 to 1959. The land for the park was donated by the Hitchcock family who bequest to the city of San Francisco was also responsible for building the famous "coit tower" memorial to Firefighters in San Francisco (Lillie Hitchcock Coit).
Indian Springs Calistoga is a resort offering the famous Calistoga mud baths and Calistoga spa hot springs. The 17 acre resort is a perfect place to relax. Calistoga's hot springs are more than just stress relief and are also known to have therapeutic benefits. Four thermal geysers produce rich mineral water and a deposit of pure volcanic ash also runs through the property. When the geysers are uncapped they blow 60 feet into the air for 24 hours a day. The geyser water is stored in holding tanks to cool it down from the initial 212 degree Fahrenheit (100 degree Celsius) eruption temperature. The waters supply the mineral pool and steam rooms, and combined with the ash, create the special mud for the famous Indian Springs mud baths. This place can leave you totally blissed out. The Olympic size hot mineral water pool at Indian Springs Calistoga is a unique attraction at this resort. The pool was built in 1920 and has a classic look.
Indian Springs Resort was established in 1861 by Samuel Brennan who was also the founder of the city of Calistoga. Fun fact is Calistoga "almost" became the home of Stanford University. In 1880, Leland Stanford bought the resort with the intention of locating Stanford University here. Instead, he established Stanford in Palo Alto and the spa tradition continued as Sam Brannan had envisioned.
