Sutherland in this earlier version is absolutely stunning!!!!
grace bumbry's singing is unforgettable. it was thru' this recording i learned about her.
she's made such an impression in me i think i'd never forget.
AND thanx to her i started listening to classical vocal music.
.... and when I was younger, I was horrified that she decided to go soprano. Thee seemed to be plenty of those already. She was solid, as a rock, as I remember ....
Adore Joan Sutherland. This is a beautiful recording of all 3 voices.
Grande Bumbry.Joan impareggiabile.
Beautifully moving - Sutherland. Bumbry. Sir Adrian Boult. LSO. Great musical artists! Elegantly performing excerpts from timeless, Eternal masterpiece. Inimitable!
Remains my favorite version of "Messiah"
'And ye shall find rest unto your Souls.' Amen
The GREATEST recording of the Messiah ever. Voices like those are irreplaceable.
oh the trills! I was lucky to grow up to this version and all others pale in comparison
I have not heard this performance for many years but it is the one I grew up with and remains my all time favourie, not least because of the unusual casting of Grace Bumbry and the much under-rated but outstanding David Ward. Is it possible to upload more from this recording?
Ditto. And surprised like you to see Bumbry, who I'd forgotten . But I also come back sometimes just to enjoy the 'old-fashioned' Boultian Handel, occasionally. It's not ideologically sound anymore 😂 but I grew up on it like you. Handel with the Boult Big Band LOL. Sutherland sings out and magnificent, like she would never have been allowed to do, by the early music "ensembles" and "consorts" push that dictate Handel style nowadays. She would have sung their wretched counter-tenors into the shade. Handel would have put Sutherland up against his best castrato, and enjoyed watching them fight it out.
Such beautiful singing.
BEAUTIFUL !
THANKS
she was like Calas. She drank the music and became the music.Heard this as a boy when first released>Handel is why I took up voice. He's SO GOOD for the voice. He loved it. He used everything he heard -street cries folk song the lot...."and brings glad tidings, from ''Rejoice could be from someone selling strawberries in London or Dublin of the time.
Music of the highest quality!
Good old Handel.
What a guy !
Voice like honey.
Kenneth McKellar was the tenor soloist in this recording - like Grace Bumbry, very good indeed in a completely unfussy way.
Formidable
Like kwai-choi-chan I too first heard the amazing voice of Grace Bumbry through this recording. I love the Klemperer recording of a few years later but Grace Hoffman is no match for Bumbry who puts so much more feeling into the music.
+cameronpaul This is about Baroque singing. And Sutherland's singing is the epitome of clarity when she was young. Bumbry's gorgeous tone is obvious. But the the glorious tone of the young Joan is untouchable when she sings Handel. Her diction and trilll is impeccable when she sings this.
I totally agree with your about the young Sutherland except for the diction which was always a problem but it doesn't decrease the fact that hers was a unique voice with an effortless technique in florid music, unmatched to this day. It was a great tragedy IMO, that she continued her career for far too long and in the end became somewhat of a parody of her former self.
@@TheVaughan5 😢😢😢
Is no one else disturbed by Bumbry's distorted vowels? I love her voice but several other contraltos have given me greater pleasure in this music (Ferrier, Shacklock, Watts, Summers). And accomplished as Sutherland is she misses something that Ritchie, Alarie, Vyvyan, Ameling and Schwarzkopf capture in their very different ways.
Dame Janet Baker my friend.
In most other music, yes but I find her Messiah rather "academic" in this music without the "spiritual" dimension I find in the others I mention. We only have to listen to her Gerontius Angel to know how spiritual she could be but perhaps Messiah lies a little low on what is essentially a mezzo voice?
spieva to rovnako krasne ako Gundula Janowitz.
