BEAUTIFUL!! I had to come and listen to this song. I was reading about Texas history and found out that during the battle of the Alamo there were about eighty Scottish mercenaries fighting along side Crockett, Bowie and the other brave men and women. The Scots' would sing this song. The Mexican's did not understand all the word to the song and so they thought the men were calling themselves Gringos. To this day Mexican's still will refer to white American's as Gringos!!!! I am not only a decent of Scotland but my relative fought in the Texas Revolution against all odds. So honored to be a part of this heritage!!!!
The popular notion that Mexicans started calling Americanos 'gringo' because they heard U.S troops singing this song (or else Green Grow the Lilacs) in the 1840s would seem to be discredited by the fact that the word was already being used to mean 'foreigner' in Spain in 1787. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gringo
My life is so much better because I get to hear Eddi sing everyday! Sure, it's only TH-cam or one of many CDs, but I hold out hope she will visit Massachusetts sometime soon.
Well, she's pretty much stolen my heart for good and all. :) I love this poem, and other's of Burns', but this version of Green Grow the Rashes is the living end.
gie me a canny oo'r at een, my airms aboond my dearie o', and worldly cares and worldly men, mae all go tapsalteerie o'. burns wrote the best love songs ever written. i'm having a lot of them tattoo'd on me such is his influence.
The melody here in more in keeping with the version Karl sang on the Succession series finale. This is my fave v ersion on youtube. ... And Karl DID murder this song, almosty as much as Edie Reader did here.... The melody stucture of both Karl's and Edie's performance.... is not flat like the other redition of this song found on youtube. This is the d be sung, just ion terms of the melody. All kinds of changes can stem from there, as long as that structure is in place.
That's a Scottish lassie who can belt oot a tune. And she does it beautifully.Michael Marra from my home city does the best version in my opinion. But well done Eddie Reader-love it!
The secret version: "Gran’ grow my hardies, O! Gran’ grow my hardies, O! The truest luves that e’er I lived I lived wi’ bosom laddies, O! “There's nought but care on ev’ry han’, In ev’ry hour that tarries, O: What signifies the life o’ man, ‘Twere na for lissom laddies, O? Gran' grow, &c. "
One of my favorite songs from early childhood. A song about how wonderful girls are! It was, and is still one of my favorites.

The Burns Club of Atlanta Ga only allow 100 men into their membership. I think Robert Burns would shun them. Go for it Eddi!

Eddi Reader - Green Grow The Bushes Ove
Eddi IS MA DARLIN :)
it's amazing that this was written 230 years ago and still is very appropriate and universal today----better than goetta
Michael Marra is the man for this song.
Yes this is great, but his rendition is wonderful.
Beautifully done. Anyone have the chords for guitar?
Correct title is "Green grow the rashes o"
