- The Secretariat legacy is an amazing gift to horse lovers of every kind. Here is one of the amazing and legendary races of Secretariat at the last leg of the triple crown, June 9th 1973. This is one amazing horse. I created this video to share with the fans. Enjoy and cry for joy in such a miracle run. :)
I want to dedicate this video that I created to 2 wonderful horses that passed away in 2006-2007: Lost in the Fog & Barbaro May they live and run within our hearts forever. They are now with "Big Red" in a kingdom that any horse lover would love to see one day.
*The instrumental song is from the movie "Rudy".
I am a horse person and have been around some great horses but I still cry everytime I watch this video. I doubt I'll ever live to see another horse as great as "Big Red". RIP Secretariat.
50k of these views are probably mine. Masterful mix of race and music. I was there when American pharaoh won triple crown at Belmont but I get more chills watching this. Tremendous !!!
I'm back! I can't stay away from this video. Chills every time I watch it, even 12 years after I first found it. What an editing job on the music; it fits so perfectly.
A special horse that was given a special gift from a higher power. This horse would not have been beaten that day by any previous Triple Crown winner. This will include Man o War. What a remarkable animal that we will all cherish to the end of our time. We will not see another horse like. You were beautiful Big Red and I know that you are winning races in the next world. God Bless and RIP.
This video with the soundtrack always makes me cry. Best horse ever.
It's that time of year again - this is the BEST video of Secretariat's Belmont, even with the grainy old footage. (I remember the days when we thought that was "high quality"!) The editing here, with the soundtrack and the supplemental footage ... it's just excellent.
No matter how many times I watch this - I get goosebumps and tears in my eyes. Secretariat was MAGNIFICENT.
cried like a baby when I first found this video.. listened live on the radio that day..
Today, June 9, 2023. Fifty years ago today, I saw the most amazing Performance that any athlete could accomplish. After all these years and aft 4:18 er all these videos, I never fail to have tears in my eyes a Lump in my throat.I believe on that day, even “Pegasus” the winged Horse of the Gods on Olympus bowed his Head in Homage to Secretariat.
I have watched this countless times, thank you so much for putting this amazing music to it. It is perfect.....and I will watch a couintless number of times as well. You did good!
"...HE IS MOVING LIKE A TREMENDOUS MACHINE!'... Right there my heart LEAPS,I lose my breath and my eyes tear up! What a call! What a race! WHAT A HORSE! I'm not a big horse racing fan, but DAMNNNN!
"He's all alone..."
I was 14 the year that Secretariat won the Triple Crown. I still get chills when I think about that horse. When it comes to Thoroughbreds, Secretariat does indeed stand alone.
I will never get tired of watching this video. brings tears to my eyes every time. thanks!
I loved it when Secretariat was blazing along and the track announcer said "He is moving like a tremendous machine" Awesome!!!!
Wow...I wasn't born until 1981 so I never had the pleasure of watching this tremendous athlete (yes, that's right) in action. This is just unreal and has to be one of the greatest moments in sports history. At about 2:40 I actually said "My God" out loud, to myself! My father attended his last race at Woodbine and I'm proud to have that souvenir ticket on my wall.
I HAVE TEARS IN MY EYES EVERYTIME I WATCH THIS VIDEO--A RECORD TIME
NEVER TO BE BROKEN-AN UNBELIEVEABLE ATHLETIC FEAT !! WE ALL MISS
YOU---RIP
Wish I could give this an additional thumb's up every time I return to watch this. There would be a lot. What an amazing video-- the choice of music couldn't have been better. Thank you, Ollie Tan.
What a tremendous video, the soundtrack was the perfect score! Well done! I was there on that Belmont day, and I can tell you from firsthand experience - the place went nuts! The roar of the crowd was so loud, you couldn't hear yourself cheer. And there wasn't a dry eye in the crowd. Everyone I saw around me, including myself, had tears of joy streaming down our faces. We had just witnessed one of the greatest horses, in one of the greatest races ever to be run. Secretariat was the one!
Damn - I've said it before, and I'll say it again - This is one of the greatest videos I've ever seen - Very inspirational - Thanks.
I've watched this video 100 times over the years...and it STILL gives me goosebumps. What a horse.
Looking at that gap between Secretariat and the other horses coming down the final stretch is like looking at the gulf between mortal man and God.
Like so many others, I return here at least once a year and feel my spirit lifted. The video is hard to see because my eyes keep filling up with tears. Huge thanks to Ollie Tan for editing and posting it.
A little sad to think that, any other year, Sham might have had his own Triple Crown. But Secretariat would not be denied. The book title got it right "The Horse That God Built" - a miracle.
May his Belmont record stand till the end of time! Run, Big Red, Run!
+old aggie Great post and my sentiments too.. just came back as that time of year and love the Rudy music with it.. I listened on the radio that day as I was camping... In my view the greatest moment in sports.. all type... and yes.. Sham any other year.. as with Alydar..
I know! Poor Sham. One of the greatest horses in history who just happened to have the bad luck to be born at the same time as THE greatest horse.
Back again for a dose of Secretariat ... love the Rudy theme used and Chic Andersons awesome call.... cried like a baby first time I found this..still gets me.
I always get goosebumps whenever I watch this race...the Rudy music really adds a lot. Thanks!
I just have to say this again. I can sit for hours watching youtube and reliving great moments in entertainment, sports, etc. that were part of my life. I am 72 years old now, and youtube provides me so many hours of nostalgia and entertainment almost every day. Thanks to all you video posters for making this happen.
I agree Mary.. I hope this finds you well 12 years on
OMG what an awesome video! Music from Rudy is so appropriate, because they kept telling Penny she couldn't do it just like they told Rudy.
This horse just continues to take my breath away every time I see him! There will never be another. So lucky to have been alive to experience the joy of Secretariat winning those races. He was truly the people's horse!
No words will ever be able to describe the magnificence of Secretariat. He's so above us humans and everything that has lived on this earth. A true miracle.
Loved the music mixed in with the announcer's play by play of the race. Secretariat is the most amazing horse to have ever lived! Just watching him run and winning by the lengths that he did is just amazing and always brings tears to my eyes. He was a big, beautiful horse.
No horse past or present could have beaten Secretariat that day...He was the greatest!!!!
Little Bold John would have beaten him.
Nope never, Big Red would have left him in the dust!!!!
He was Americas horse,he owns the records in all three Triple Crown races and his record time in the Belmont may very likely stand forever!!!
Simply badass. One of the greatest performances in all of sport.
Perfect choice of music for this video, from one of my favorite movies, RUDY. Amazing horse!
If I'm ever feeling down, I just come here and watch this video... Always makes me feel better!! Big, Beautiful, Amazing Big Red!!! Love the way you put this together and the music is perfect!! Thank you!!
I pray that when they do the movie rights, that they show the actual race footage of The Triple Crown with Secretariat...no Hollywood movie could EVER capture the enormity of what he did in those first 2 races and on that Belmont day...the footage of him deserves to be seen by everyone who wasn't there during his miraculous races. They should really see Secretariat's supernatural ability through the eyes of what really happened and the powerful effect he had on us all. He's beyond imitation.
I love this video. I watch it at least once a year around this time. So inspirational.
Had trouble finding this again, but when American Pharoah won it this was the first thing I wanted to watch. Glad I tracked it down. One of my favorite vids on TH-cam!
This was a jaw dropping race in 1973 ( I saw it in 73) Its still jaw dropping, it will always be jaw dropping. Secretariat was the greatest race horse of all time. i don't think all his records will be broken for some time. He is an immortal. God breathed in his nostrils this day.
I saw this on TV when it happened as a young adult. Never ever forgotten Secretariat, or that moment. Just wanted him to get the Triple Crown, never expecting this one for the ages moment. Loud cheering in our living room at the start of race for a win, screaming in the middle, and crying at the end. This was a once in a lifetime performance. I'm grateful I had a chance to see it in real time, even if just on TV. It was definitely a once in a lifetime performance. I'll remember him always.
The greatest racehorse of all time,he still holds the track records in all three triple crown races,no horse before of since will ever touch him!!!
Timeless performance... Incredible performance.
Always brings me to tears. Very special thanks to the editor who compiled this video. Absolute magic.
Thanks for the kind words. ;)
+Vid First I agree so much and come back at this time of the year.. in tears again as was Jack Nicklaus I heard when watching this live.. two great sportsmen but I consider this the greatest moment in sports human or other type...
I agree. The greatest moment in sports. EVER!
Me to every time
Oh my gosh.... to see a horse with such strength and determination is something you only see once in a lifetime... Secretariat is my favorite racehorse of all time not just because of his amazing win at the Belmont, because of what an amazing horse he was... I wish that I'd been able to see him when he was still alive, but I'll settle for watching this amazing display of sheer determination. :) Secretariat was an amazing horse, and no other could possibly repeat what he was.
Not gonna lie, I'm so glad someone made this race with the Rudy theme in the background. This piece is so moving, and to watch Secretariat dominate at the same time is a joy to watch.
I actually saw the race on tv that day with my beloved father, now in heaven along with that beautiful horse, no matter how many times I see this, I still get chills. Awesome video and music perfect to go with it!
By far the greatest show of athletic perfection every seen on earth. It is the reason people cry and weep when watching this. You are witnessing something man hardly ever truly attains; PERFECTION.
Very well said! Totally agree! Secretariat = Perfection!
One comment says it all, "moving like a tremendous machine", a classic indeed.
Unquestionably, considering the Triple Crown was at stake and the unfathomable performance versus his peers, this resides as the greatest "Athletic" achievement EVER in sports history!
Mike Rodriguez- get over it F$%K FACE...it IS the greatest Athletic Achievement EVER in Sports...PERIOD!!! It really is time for you to go back into your coma after you finish shoveling your shit for Pancho Martin!!!!!!!!!!
Mike Rodriguez- You are such an imbecile!!! What in God's name does his performance a few months later have ANYTHING to do with what SEC did in the TC??? Because Babe Ruth struck out over 1,500 times, does that dismiss his 714 HR's??? Michael Jordan, Bobby Orr, Tom Brady, Joe Montana....the list goes on and on....failed SO MANY times....does that dismiss their incredible championships??? You just don't get it because you are a pig headed fool SOOOOO frustrated that Big Red embarrassed you and your pathetic staff in 1973 We aren't stupid shit face and we ALL know your absolutely insane comments are directly related to the world-class ass-kicking SEC bestowed upon you and your dumbfounded staff in the spring of 1973!!!!!!!!!!!!! ONCE AGAIN...in the world of sport immortals, and athlete's legacy is truly measured by the ICONIC MANNER OF THEIR SUCCESSES and NOT the handful of their failures!!!!!
Mike Rodriguez - Your comments PROVE your unparalleled IGNORANCE. All you can do is point to two of SEC's losses when me and the WORLD are focusing on his incredible triumphs. You have NOTHING to "hang your hat on" but Onion & Prove Out which in the larger scheme mean ZERO!!! Any formidable horse would have beaten SEC in the Whitney...he had ZERO business running in the race!!! Where was Kelso in the TC??? Hiding behind his aching leg??? Ignorant comment on my part, but your unbridled stupidity inspires and merits equally returned ignorance. Your game is SO TRANSPARENT...when you CANNOT intelligently answer a definitive response your resort to Onion, prove Out and most offensive...steroids. Everyone is tired of your bullshit so now I am going to say what I should have said a long time ago....why don't you go FUCK OFF you complete moron because you are nothing but a complete piece of human garbage!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Mike Rodriguez- answer these questions for me and I will continue this conversation.......failure to provide an answer ends the conversation...period. Give me the times and lengths of victory for Kelso and Dr. Fager in each of the TC races??? If you can answer the questions with FACTS I succumb to you. If you CANNOT (which we KNOW you can't), then provide me with the list of excuses for the LACK OF DATA! Either way you LOSE DICKHEAD!!!!!!!!!!!
Mike Rodriguez- It's Over. Game...Set...Match! You Lose!
I was 21 when i witnessed this race....I'll never witness again....most amazing horse with a personality and will......just a wonderful gift to everyone who knew him.....
My favorite video of all times. I watch it a couple times every year.
I watch this video religiously a few times a week. it always lifts my spirits. Thank you :)
Best moment: "But Secretariat's all alone!"
Thanks so much for making this video. I get goosebumps and tears in my eyes every time I watch it! I love the music. Secretariat was truly one amazing horse. I was hoping Big Brown would win the Triple Crown this year too, but I guess we will have to wait.
Such a great tribute to the Greatest Race Horse of all time..... the Music and the life and times of Secretariat in this clip are spectacularly well put together,,thanks so much for posting..........oh and one more thing,,, can you imagine if he would of ran as a 4 and 5 year old,,,,,,,,Oh My....
You couldn't have picked a better theme song to go with this video. The theme from "Rudy" always makes me smile and cry at the same time. Fanastic video and tribute to a great horse.
Brings tears to my eyes. What an amazing animal. Beautiful, perfection...etc.
Thanks so much for putting this music to this once in a lifetime race. I am happy to say that all my children have seen Secretariat when he was alive at Claiborne Farm and each child had their picture taken with Secretariat. Secretariat's handler was Clay Arnold every time I visited there, and he is in all the pictures of Secretariat and my children.
I love the movie so much! And now that I saw this I'm truly amazed! Secretariat is now my favorite movie of all times!!!!!
Someone cutting onions in here? F***ing gets me every time.
Me too...
Thanks! I am happy to have my videos back online. :)
Wonderful horse - just spectacular!! A performance I doubt we'll ever see again.
The announcer Chick Anderson's race call was perfect for this magnificient race.
I love this video . Secretariat 's indomitable spirit of what can be accomplished with strong will & desire. It hard to watch this video without holding back tears. One of the Greatest Horses of all times!!!!
Untouchable. Every once in a while an athlete comes along who redefines what is possible. This 4 minute clip captures the significance of this event 1000 times better than the movie.
Beautiful and moving tribute to the greatest horse that ever lived!
This video gets to me every time.
Loved the music in it. Perfect match! Oh, wow...what a horse...and what a race!!!
THe only "person" to be on the cover of Time, Newsweek and Sports Illustrated in the same week!
I was 14 in the Spring of 1973. Secretariat burst on the scene and everyone was talking about this incredible horse. I live in Laurel, MD. where he raced as a 2 year old. What was so unbelieveable was the way he won the Triple Crown. He ran all 3 races differently. How a horse could turn in the performance he did at the Belmont... after the grueling fast paced wins at the Derby and Preakness. God Bless him...the GREATEST!!!
thanks for sharing this...I saw the movie last night (sneak peek showing at local theater) and it is PHENOMENAL! This is a story that should have been told many years ago. Disney does the movie like only Disney can, I recommend anyone who remembers this great and very smart athlete to see it, and even if you don't remember because you are too young, you will be so glad you saw how history was made in this exciting movie/tribute to the greatest racehorse ever!
I love this!! The theme song from "Rudy" makes it even more special! I also return to this clip quite often! Thank you!
Great video. Great music. Phenomenal athlete. A true legend. I remember feeling sad the day it was reported that he was put down....
he has wing like eagles.. and runs like its nothing... the ground flys beneath his hooves.. and the power is his. He is one tremendous horse. Amazing. I watch this, and im left breathless. i believe that Secretariat lives on in heaven, and gallops on forever.
Very good moving video. Wonderful to see the highlights of this beautiful and powerful horse. Nice to remember the others and watch it again.
I love the music. Rudy is one of my favorite endings.
I couldn't help but come back again tonight to these Secretariat videos. It's inspiring to see such an amazing animal! After starting in dead last he moves up QUICKLY to pace the leader. Then once he moves ahead of the leader he gets further and further and further ahead. Towards the end I thought he'd finally coast but no, but he ran EVEN FASTER at the end. How was such a horse possible, to be able to toy with other great race horses of his day?
A man among boys...
The music with this is perfect! ♥
People are always saying how horse racing is cruel because they force the horses to run. That right there is testimony that racehorses run only because they can. Secratariat had the grestest heart of any horse to ever set foot on the track. There was no horse that could have beaten him in that race, not then, not now, not ever.
I love this video! You did an excellent job on it! It sends chills down my spine every time I watch it!
Love You Sham!! Heart of a true champion
"It's almost a match race..." For a moment, it does seem like a match race between Secretariat and Sham, but then, only seconds later, you realize that it isn't a match race at all, that in fact, there's one horse, and only one horse, in this race: Secretariat.
Greatest. sports. performance. ever.
There will never be another horse like Secretariat,he holds the track records of all three triple crown races and his record at the Belmont may very well stand forever!
The greatest performance in sports by the greatest athlete who ever lived. Forty-four years on...the record still stands. I love you Red.
This is truly excellent video, without a doubt one of the best on youtube. The race, the horse, the soundtrack -- so perfectly fitted to the footage -- and the images at the end, all make this one of the most nicely done videos I've seen on this site.
Never was any horse like Big Red. No one will ever see one like him again.
Thank you so much for posting this wonderful video once again. It was a regular stop for me when I went through youtube to watch some videos. Amazing...
I am a fan of the "sport of kings" due to Secretariat. I watched all three of his Triple Crown races on TV that year and after seeing this performance, I was hooked on racing. RIP Big Red, you were the best. A true "superhorse".
Beautiful video, in higher quality it would be amazing! But even this older fuzzy video brought tears to my eyes, that win was breathtaking - really loved the photos in the end too!!!
I'm back again! This video is incredible. Always pumps me up and leaves me with a big ol' grin.
People who weren't around back then will never understand how much we loved that horse.
That is the most beautiful horse ive ever seen!
once in a while a great horse sets foot on a race track but secretariat it the greatest of all every time I see this race I get shivers up my spine
Magnificent! Just watched this for the umpteenth time and, as usual, my nose is running.
This is by far the best video clip of the race! So much clearer than all the rest. Thank you so much!!! ♥
Man I can never see that enough. I was ten years old when he won the triple crown and it's been etched on my brain ever since.
this is the best quality sound and picture i have seen on youtube. thank you!
that was an amazing moment, I wish I'd been there.... SECRETARIAT the best horse racing...
reast in peace unforgettable BIG RED
awesome video.
he was, in my opinion, the greatest racehorse of all time.
thanks!
this video flooded my eyes
thanks for making it
RIP Super Horse!!
You couldn't have done a better job with this this video. Amazing. Thank you.
I'd like to know who the Zeros are that disliked this. They wouldn't know greatness if it smacked them in the face. This video is the most inspirational that I've ever seen. Thank you.
He was an amazing horse that we will probably never see one like him again. He was supernatural or in other words a freak. He was braught into this world to race and God he did not let us down. Still get goose bumps when I see this race. I will never forget the words of the announcer "He is moving like a tremendous machine". If Citation and Man o War could have been placed into that race Big Red would have given them the same treatment that he gave Sham. Thanks Big Red for the memories and RIP.
Nice story. I wish I met him and feed him a carrot of thanks. :)
Just watched this year's Belmont. The winning time was 2:30.2. Winning time of Big Red, 2:24. I saw the race on televsion when he set the record. I could not believe what I was seeing and I still don't. Tears were running down my cheeks and everytime I see this, the same happens. What a terrific vid you produced. Great job with the music.
