    I just stumbled upon this. I cannot tell you how much I appreciate it. I love that you are encouraging people to think and research for themselves. "Organic" "non-GMO" words like these are widely abused.
    I am surprised by the sheer number of home gardeners that search for seeds that are non-GMO. If it isn't blasted on the seed pack, they won't buy it. I've been called a liar when I tell them that the general public cannot purchase gmo seeds. And Hybrids are Not GMO.

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You are 100% right with GMO seeds. I spent a good portion of a video on it. People get mad at me for videos like this and unsubscribe. But thats cool. You cant buy GMO seeds for sure and if you did, they would cost a fortune. My other one is organic seeds. An organic seed is not better than the seed that are not stamped organic. A tiny tomato seed cant hold anything bad in it. LOL and you dont lie.

    Instead of throwing away all my leaves, I bought a leaf mulcher in the fall. This thing ground them up almost to powder. I have so must mulch this year I plan on laying on at least 12 in over my beds. I have wood chips layed out everywhere but in my beds. I had such great success with wine cap mushrooms that I plan on inoculating my wood chips in my garden with them and oyster mushrooms. I’m also going all heirloom varieties of tomato and peppers. Hoping for the best year ever. Hoping........

      The best thing about using organic matter like leaves or alfalfa for mulch is that they attract worms like crazy. Im also planning on adding a pipe to add plant matter in for the worms to help create compost while being in my plant beds.

    When I was really getting into gardening, I understood I did bot know what , how & why I should/needed to do to be a successful gardener. So, in this age of poo-pooing of science, I am extremely glad I found you and a very few others who espoused a more scientific approach to gardening. In addition to clay retaining water, it also has a very high cation exchange capacity (CEC), meaning it will hold onto minerals that can feed your plants. Sand on the other hand has a very poor CEC. I believe clay is like 100-300 meq per 100g while sand is like 2-5 meq per 100g.

It worked out ok and gave me time to make compost and learn. Now that I have systems in place and more money I dont use it. But your right Gary, do what works on your budget.

I already have a 4 bin compost setup that was built in my first year. I also have 2 large leaf mold bins, but the leaf mold will be used as a peat replacement. My original post wasnt about what I am doing now, but what I did in my first year when none of this was setup and there was still a need to fertilize. Compost, even made in a bio reactor takes some time to make.

    Just test it out, Gary. Make a few quart pots with different amounts of non-organic pellets in increasing concentrations plus a control pot with none. Transplant seedlings of equal size and see what happens. If there is glyphosate in the alfalfa you will see poorer growth in the pots with more pellets. Or you may not see any difference at all between the pots with pellets vs the control. Which would tell you that the seedlings are getting much in the way of nutrients from the pellets. I think I will try it this spring with my brand of alfalfa pellets which are fed to my meat goats, but I don't have a channel to report the results.

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would but one issue is that GMO alfalfa doesnt necessarily mean glyophosate was used (most likely yes). If it was used I dont know the quantity of spray and how close it was done to harvest time. But it would be good experiment. The bottom line is my garden didnt struggle in anyway where I used it. I think ultimatlely it is finding a brand alfalfa that works for you. If you want to track the brands. And email results... I can put them in my FB group. www.therustedgarden.com

      @@THERUSTEDGARDEN Organic does not mean that gmo alfalfa was not used, organic only means that it wasn't sprayed with any pesticide or herbicide. You could grow gmo alfalfa and not spray it which would mean that it was organic but probably wouldn't because it is more expensive. Just saying your garden did okay doesn't mean that glyphosate residue wasn't present. I probably will do the test since I always have extra seedlings. I would like to add organic material to my very poor soil, but I want to add a large amount and the pellets are expensive, organic is much too expensive.

      Well... thats true for any crop. What I am saying is why would farmers spray a crop 3 days, 1 week, 2 weeks before and waste money. Right? It is used early so the weeds dont over grow and choke out the alfalfa. Doesn't meant there isn't residue just because it is done early. Does mean that early spraying loses it potency though. Another reason to worry less I suppose. Thanks

      @@THERUSTEDGARDEN Gary, I suggest doing a search for roundup and its suggested uses straight from the horse's mouth. Daylene is 100% correct in their statement, in which monsanto highly suggests spraying glyphosate (aka: roundup- roundup is the product name for glyphosate) on the alfalfa or other cash crop, a few days before harvest to encourage the drying process. This is so the drying vegetation (eg., alfalfa) won't mold during the drying. This also means an incredibly excessive and damaging amount of glyphosate residue left on the end product that you say is safe to put in the garden. I'm not trying to poo-poo your video, but please do your homework before saying gmos and glyphosate are safe. Without doing so, you've just told everyone it's safe to introduce glyphosate into their home garden- ones they are possibly trying to keep chemical-free. Please do your homework before disseminating information to the public.

    Another great video! I loved the explanations on pressure treated wood and the use of the alfalfa. QUESTION: You said the organic matter you put on your beds will break down over the next 5 months or so by the microorganisms and bacteria. But what about in areas that the ground freezes. Does this still hold true or does this breakdown only occur before and after?

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So when I say that... granular type and organic matter is slow release. So it breaks down over time, a little at a time, and SLOWLY give to the plants. So this will have a good bit broken down over 3-5 months but it wont be 100% composted. When warmth comes it will speed up. I will also put more down in the spring so that slowly breaks downs over the warm months. Hope that helps. Freezing shuts everything down. But a sunny days warms the matter on the surface.

    I recently built some new raised beds this last fall. I order topsoil and filled them up with this premium top soil. What i found is that this premium top soil doesnt drain very quickly. What should i do with this soil? Add sand? Peat moss? How much? The beds are probably 8 to 10 inches of top soil.

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well there is a difference between pooling and sitting water and soil staying wet. If it stays wet, I think it will be fine as warmth returns. If it pools as in doesnt drain. I would think it is the soil beneath it. In that case i would break up whats below. Just plunge a shove down and lift it a bit. You want water to drain through your 8-10 inches and hit sub soil that also drains.

    Is there any “safe” bagged mulch that can be purchased at big box stores? Most for them have dye in them for landscaping. You mentioned that you use wood chips as garden mulch, but where do you get it? I have your book preordered, and can’t wait for Amazon to start shipping!

      I get mine from a landscape company now as a bulk drop. But I use to get shredded hardwood, no dyes at Home Depot.

      I believe the dyed mulches that are mulch and soil council certified have dyes that are safe. The red is iron oxide, black is carbon, and I think the brown is "vegetable based". Maybe you can look it up to see if it sounds safe for you.

    Just because it is not organic does not mean it is GMO. Being organic certified is a major pain in the butt and still allows the farmer to use pesticides and herbacides, they just are not petroleum based. Some are just as strong and just bad for people and plants.

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is costly and in some cases silly. Ground.... after 3 years of no chemical ferts or sprays... is deemed approved for growing 'organic' seeds. Most people just look for ORGANIC stamp and dont ask what makes it organic. And yep you can use chemical sprays as you mention. IT is backwards. I want a list of what is used on my food, not a stamp saying its okay what they used... but I digress.

      U sound pretty dug into your position on roundup...alfalfa pellets won’t have more than a trace of it in them and between the growthlife of the alfalfa and the amount of time the pellets have to break down in a garden bed if added in fall to revitalize soil nutrients, very little chemical will leach into your bed (though not sure what half life of round up is).

    If you start having any chronic problems, consider chemicals, glyphosate, GMO's, roundup, in your food supply. Your reassurances, Gary, are not based on science such as lab results, or long term studies. They seem to be only your opinions. I was getting ready to buy your book but it appears we are not on the same page. Other than that, you do have some helpful hints on other topics.

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thats why I say research and dont take my opinion as is. Chemicals are everywhere. Worry where it is fit. Dont fear everything before researching. Id be glad to look at lab results. That is how I decided to not worry about wood leaching. Feel free to post them here and help others out with their personal decisions. Id love food to be labled GMO. And have what is sprayed on and around it on the label. I am not worried about alfalfa though.

    What really rubs me the wrong way about GMOs is seed companies listing their products as "GMO free". All garden seeds are GMO free. Most gardeners will never even *see* a single GMO seed in their life unless they have a farmer friend; GMO seeds are just not sold to the general public normally. Its just feeding off a fear for marketing purposes.
