And theres why you give no quarter to your enemies because you can be sure as shit they won't to you. If Simon had taken Henry and Edwards head he likely would have been disliked by the nobility but who cares? they hated him and didn't help him anyway.
@kpb96m1 Why would you think people would have just let him rule the lands? The only reason he was actually allowed to rule the lands now was most likely because he captured Henry and Edwards. They were his most valuable assets.
@kpb96m1As a king in that period you did not really need to have to keep the masses fed to keep the rule. You had to keep the purse of your direct vassal full. Simon himself had food, was sheltered and safe, and had a shit load of freedom compared to most. Yet he is the one who took power from the sitting king, not peasants. While not impossible. It was very rare in those times for peasants to group up and rebel. At least on a scale that it worried a king or that he even had to get involved. So to keep those lords loyal to the king in check he needed to have the king as a prisoner. If he killed them the war would most likely have continued. I’m not a big fan of kings and generals, they just seem to copy other successful TH-camr styles like bazbattles but somehow have the means to throw out masses of content more regularly. Their research isn’t that great either beyond Wikipedia level and they lack the personality of people like bazbattles, invicta or historia civilis. Just my opinion though and I still follow them in case they pop up with something that really interests me
Tommy G oh okay well I mean I haven’t seen any TH-cam videos on the battles of panipat and kings and generals has great videos on that and other great battles and wars like they did one on the Gallipoli campaign in ww1 the winter war of ww2 the falklands war the Korean War the first Arab siege of Constantinople aka Istanbul
Very well told story Sir! Hats off. I completely understand why it takes awhile between episodes. But this way they all fit together. The Alexander the great saga is indeed an important document. It allows a lot of subtext to be added by the listener. So who was Montfort really? I believed in a comment earlier but in this episode it is implied that he may have become overconfident. Even paranoid. Don't hesitate the Stalin saga. He had 24 limousines so he could change every day. In fear of being assasinated. "But that is a story for another time."
Slaughtered to a man, apparently. Someone who lived in Evesham told me according to legend, the Welsh were wiped out in less than an hour by Edward's cavalry, after they fled towards the river.
This battle in particular was bloody, normally noblemen were taken for random in this period but Evesham was noted as having very little chivalry on display with almost all being killed. the chronicles wrote "The murder of Evesham for battle it was none" It is also said that Montfort's troops were chased as far as Tewkesbury around 12 miles away and the gardens and streets of evesham were themselves the sites of bloodshed
Yeah I used to live in Evesham and walked across the bridge every day to work, they have some great info boards up around the ‘battle’ site - it wasn’t a battle, it was a massacre
A famous quote written at the time which you can read on a memorial at the battlefield here says that it should be called the 'murder of Evesham' not the 'battle of Evesham'.
I doubt the Welsh would have been popular around there, and they'd have had little assistance in escaping from the locals. Edward and the Royal faction would have been wanting to send a message.
Something that wasn't mentioned in the video was the Simon was married to Eleanor, Henry's sister. This meant that Henry de Montfort, who was also killed in the battle, was Edward's cousin.
The script is acceptable, but the narrator, Dan Boud, is exceptional. His mastery of grammar and sentence structure is lightly worn and informs the story. He is not distant like many imported narrators, nor is he breathless with enthusiasm, but there in the moment, bringing the political and military events alive. I imagine this comes from studious preparation, and perhaps a love of history too . . .
Another 'Raid: Shadow Legends'! I don't care if it keeps this wonderful channel going! I will gladly suffer the pain of more 'Raid' if it means BazBattles keeps on keeping on.
May I just point out that Edward’s nickname “Longshanks” wasn’t given to him into the first Anglo-Scottish War a few years later as King Edward 1st which is the same war he became “Hammer of the Scots”
Excellent, informative work as always. You guys remain the ur-example of what makes good colored map history. I’d be interested in reading about the primitive form of representative government you mentioned de Montfort establishing. Do you have a recommended source on that!

Oh yeah. It's widely theorized that Edward's trademark heavy-handedness once he became King was a direct result his youth spend observing his father being walked all over by his barons, by the French and Scottish Kings, and by pretty much anyone who had even a tiny bit of backbone. Henry III was just the worst, and seeing how much his father sucked at being King most likely made Edward hyperconscious against slights against the honor and reputation of the English Crown once he became King himself.
I don’t mind the Raid ads honestly. Some good memes have come out of it and at then of the day, Raid has helped fund so much content I enjoy that I can’t be mad about it.
It occurs to me rebellion is pretty bad for either leader. You essentially increase the relative and potentially the quantitative power of your upper class. Decreasing your control over the country. But you force the other side to do the same. So essentially whichever leader wins the rebellion is in a weakened position, compared to the nobility of the winning side who benefit the most. Having more land. And larger militaries. And getting more in all probability. From this view we can see that the essential question in a rebellion is if the nobles under you think they can win. Barring illogical thought. And how well you can win without giving away to much. And the post rebellion rebuild. Which includes reconsolidating your power base not only from the opposition, but your own people.

And the way u explaining with good montage and animation
Keep up the good work its really perfect and thank you for sharing those informations with us.
Fantastic work
It's interesting to learn more about Edward Longshanks outside of the War for Scottish Independence.
Great video! Love it that you cover lesser known conflicts like this
This speaker is great! It is the best voice of all history channels!
When you did the commercial about the battery drainer, I literally thought I was tripping for a few seconds
Been dying for another one of these!!
Love these recent themes! First Barons War would also be an interesting campaign to cover.
Tommy G I completely agree with you because the Robin Hood movie with Russell Crowe in it takes place during the first barons war
Same with Kings and Generals, a channel just like this one.
Tancred de Hauteville I know what you mean and I really love the kings and generals TH-cam channel a lot
Hey buddy...
Great fan of your videos.....
Will be cool to see any ancient Indian battle done by you .....
Based on this map, the site of Simon de Montfort's death is now a Premier Inn
the king must've been so proud of his son
Good to know you still making awesome video
Very well told story Sir! Hats off. I completely understand why it takes awhile between episodes. But this way they all fit together. The Alexander the great saga is indeed an important document. It allows a lot of subtext to be added by the listener. So who was Montfort really? I believed in a comment earlier but in this episode it is implied that he may have become overconfident. Even paranoid. Don't hesitate the Stalin saga. He had 24 limousines so he could change every day. In fear of being assasinated. "But that is a story for another time."
great content man, its really easy to listen to and watch
Calm collective narration.
No one could deny Edward Longshanks was a competent ruler.
YESSSSS I ALWAYS LOVE BAZBATTLES
Brave of you to confess that.
I watch these for "Contingent" "full route" and "royal retinue"
lol that battery drainer is actually good for pranks. 🤣
Feel like it's been forever since your last video, miss you guys
Soooo since the bridge was blocked did Edward and his army slaughter the rebels who ran away back to town or did they become prisoners or ...?
Slaughtered to a man, apparently. Someone who lived in Evesham told me according to legend, the Welsh were wiped out in less than an hour by Edward's cavalry, after they fled towards the river.
This battle in particular was bloody, normally noblemen were taken for random in this period but Evesham was noted as having very little chivalry on display with almost all being killed.
the chronicles wrote
"The murder of Evesham for battle it was none"
It is also said that Montfort's troops were chased as far as Tewkesbury around 12 miles away and the gardens and streets of evesham were themselves the sites of bloodshed
Sensational thank you!
I imagine this comes from studious preparation, and perhaps a love of history too . . .
As long as they're paying our undervalued history Bois Raid can stay.
I see a new "BazBattles" video, I click.
Another 'Raid: Shadow Legends'! I don't care if it keeps this wonderful channel going! I will gladly suffer the pain of more 'Raid' if it means BazBattles keeps on keeping on.
Where have you been! This quarantine is killing me. Been waiting on new vids!
I live in Kenilworth and proud for what he started
The legend is back
I missed this! Thank you!
thnks for another great video!
I’d actually give RSL a try, but my phone battery is so shite that it wouldn’t be able to handle it
Keep up the great content, I love these battles
Finally after soo much waiting
Never would I of thought to hear about a battle so close to home, I'm from redditch which is the next town over, Literally a 10 minute drive if that.
No the next town over would be alcester...but pretty close though.
@@Simon-eu2hz I would honestly say redditch is closer, it literally takes 5 minutes in a car
This narrator makes history studying fun
I’m only here for the narrator
The plot twist is that Black Hole Battery Drainer is actually Raid Shadow Legends in disguise.
??????????????????????
@@pavelmachytka5604 I... might had been drunk when I wrote that lol
YES A NEW VIDEO! Good bye sleep, hello BazBattles!
And omg the sponsor troll, love it. Absolutely love it!
this is soooo cool to watch my town is on the river Severn and i got to college in Worcester
also its pronounced evshum
BazBattles you are the best, you should study the battle of Tolentino between Murat king of Naples and the austro-hungarian army.
Oh man I have missed this voice and background score. Finally voicegasm

the sound design was great, so immersive
May I just point out that Edward’s nickname “Longshanks” wasn’t given to him into the first Anglo-Scottish War a few years later as King Edward 1st which is the same war he became “Hammer of the Scots”
Yeah, but it's the nickname he's best known by.
Hammer of the Scots was given him by much later historians
@@walkinginhistory1918 no it's on his tomb
Excellent, informative work as always. You guys remain the ur-example of what makes good colored map history. I’d be interested in reading about the primitive form of representative government you mentioned de Montfort establishing. Do you have a recommended source on that!

The start of a very interesting life for the Prince Edward.
Bucketheadhead i would sort of agree with you on that but it would also be the start of the man who would go onto conquer Scotland
Chase Dolan No doubt an absolutely ruthless King, but at least his conquest of Scotland was not so total as to become a permanent state of affairs.
Bucketheadhead well to me it’s a state of affairs because I am part Scottish
Chase Dolan As am I, yet I don’t see how anything Edward I accomplished relates to our current state of affairs.
Love these videos, you should do them more often
I don’t mind the Raid ads honestly. Some good memes have come out of it and at then of the day, Raid has helped fund so much content I enjoy that I can’t be mad about it.
everytime i play Total War i imagine this narrator explaining my battles in detail
WE WANT MORE WW1 WW2 VIDS!!! MUCH LOVE !!! 🤛🏼🤛🏼🤛🏼
Brilliant presentation!
You guys are saving my life😃
It occurs to me rebellion is pretty bad for either leader.
