The founder of the band, Rhythm guitarist Miku Kobato (Po ) is not a backgroundsinger in my eyes, she is the second singer. Starting the band, she did begin as the singer but realized very early, that her voice is not as powerful for Rock, as she wanted. So she stepped back and found a real Rock-Singer and did learn then to play the guitar. Amazing attitude and a real teamwork.
You can see in their first video "Thrill", that she used the guitar there more as an decoration element, but soon with the help of the lead guitar Kanami she did make a huge effort. Love her for this.

Kanami is very jazz influenced, so you will hear a lot of complex jazz chords in her compositions. Kanami credits Carlos Santana as her guitar muse. BAND-MAID TRIVIA: Kanami Tono is also a classically-trained pianist and has a university degree in economics. She is also pretty much a space cadet; very eccentric (she is also adorable). Her guitar counterpart (and student), Miku is, OTOH, a self-described clumsy person, with more stage falls and trips than anybody in rock music. Miku and Kanami are the two shortest members of the band...at right around 5' and 5'1" respectively...when I met them, I was blown away how tiny Miku and Kanami are...and how amazingly tall (for Japanese women) MISA and Akane are.

Here's a sentence for you, John: The way they always change things up within the song, never repeating verse structure, and use 4 or 5 different riff, break, bridge and run ideas where each one could be the bases for its own song... all wrapped around a memorable chorus and multiple solos by different members while Saiki's vocals focus the experience into a cohesive force with Miku's lyrics and backups, makes Kanami and the gang genius songwriters -- and Kanami maybe even a musical savant.

IMO they have 5 absolute insane things that makes them one of the best (IMO THE BEST) band right now...
    1. It´s their variety of genres they are able to put into one song, there are songs with 3 or more genre changes, pace changes, riff changes and so on, it´s wild. NEVER BORING!
    2. No one stands out, everybody is over the top talented on her instrument, has an awesome voice or the power to back everything up.
    3. They are really close to each other, they are not just a band, they also hang out with each other and are friends, so they have an very high chemistry with each other.
    4. Nothing is fake, they really enjoy what they are doing, they are writing the songs, writing the lyrics, they have FUN and love to serve their fans new songs and they miss to go on tour to see them again. They care a lot about their fans!
    5. They are still young and have already made SO MANY songs, you have to look it up, the workrate is INSANE! They always evolving, never stop improving and always wanna get better and it´s not a phrase or to show off, they really do it... Kanami (main songwriter) is ALWAYS thinking about music, i bet she has already another 50 songs in the pocket...
Nice you are enjoying them so much, there is a lot to love and a lot discover from this band. Greetings from Germany and you earned a new sub, i always LOVE to learn more about music and especially about Band-Maid, because i am not a musician and have NO IDEA about it. You never stop learning... Have a nice weekend!

This is one of their previous style songs really. The song Different really started them on a new tangent. About half of the newest album, Unseen World, is in a newer, more chaotic style. And they didn't lose a scrap of their musicality doing it. You will be amazed when you get to them.

Great analysis! I learned a new word "virtuousity". :) You really hit on a lot of the elements that make Band Maid so popular among us old school classic rock guys. They have a lot of the bluesiness and riffs typical of the great classic rock bands but bring enough new elements and variations to keep it fresh. Plus they are so dang catchy. I think you would like Manners...a very heavy, bluesy rock song with a great groove but also feels very fresh.

'Insanely Good' Couldn't have put it better myself. Thanks for coming back to Band Maid. Kanami, lead guitar, is the principle song writer. She comes up with the melody and the girls then chip in their parts and then she arranges it. For 'Blooming', my favourite Band Maid track, there is a fantastic tapping solo with great drum accompiament and Saiki singing so fast like a dragon spitting fire she is almost rapping, please check it out. You should also look at 'Freedom' from the same concert as 'Domination' a great fun song with lots of energy and an Akane drum solo. They also just released a live version of their song 'No God' from their 7th and latest album 'Unseen World' which Misa, bass guitar, wrote a solo to play. Have fun !!

Their songs are hooky and punchy enough to just listen to casually, but they've also got enough attention to detail that the active listener is going to have a good ol' time. This might seem like a weird comparison, but this is the same kind of trick a band like Tool manages to do quite frequently, albeit using very different techniques and influences.

Welcome to the band maid rabbit hole :)
You miiight want to check out wonderland live if you like compositional skills and arrangements. It's less heavy, but it's a masterpiece. On the heavier side of things, I think no god live would blow your head off :) the way the bass and guitars interweave is just mind=boggling.

I think Band-Maid is the master of catchy lyrics and especially having "poppy" choruses but what is unleased underneath has nothing to do with pop music. This is why they have so many great songs. These women know how to play and write songs. The lyrics hook you and the playing amazes you, especially since each member is allowed to shine on a regular basis.

Bass drums and lead guitar proper musically educated...classical and jazz theory informing their rock journey. They seem incapable of making a boring song...always unexpected breaks, bridges, solos and change-up of verses. Their albums are all great.

Note on the visuals in Japan, Visual Kei is very important culturally in the music, with real roots in things like Kabuki.. Loads of bands and groups from all kinds of genres have a “look”. Much more then you see in the west. Lovebites is another Japanese metal band with loads of talent and a look that is unique to them.

The gimmick might be something they needed as a new band as it seems they have a lot of really good bands in Japan so the competition is fierce. I've heard from Band Maid for quite some time, maybe since their debut but dismissed from that very fact they seemed to me a generic group trying to ride the popularity of Babymetal and relying on young attractive girls in maid outfits. I was very wrong and I'm glad they kept working hard and grinding their popularity to what they are today. For me I really enjoy their style is reminiscent of a lot of old school and hard rock bands but innovative enough to keep you interested. Also from listening their earlier material and comparing to the newer stuff is also quite clear they've been improving into their music composition and proficiency as performers.

@Mark Fisher Completely taken over the scene? That's complete nonsense. I like Band-Maid, don't get me wrong, but there are many Japanese bands with much higher technical skills. And I mean on all or at least most positions. Now what one prefers is up to the individual, obviously. But this is a fact.

Your opinion that they are a throwback to the 70s and 80s (even 90s) with a modern twist is right on. This is why I enjoy their music. It's new and nostalgic at same time. You are in my top 5 reactors. Your insight makes me appreciate BM more. I was impressed that you immediately picked up the 5/4 time change in Onset. Fantastic breakdown/analysis, loved it.
Couldnt agree more with the comments on hard rock/70s/80s rock influences and even punk vibes thrown in there.
This band combines some of the best elements from different genres (metal, progressive, punk, hard rock, classic rock, jazz, classical, even a bit of pop for their catchy ass chorus lol) to create what most of us refer to as the "BAND-MAID sound".
Sometimes if you close your eyes and listen, you could swear you were ported back in time listening to a band from the past... All while realizing you are actually listening to the future!
Looking forward to more BAND-MAID! :)

You offered many interesting observations and insights not found in the countless other Domination reactions I’ve watched. I appreciate your note of the minor 9ths, the mix of simplicity and virtuosity, the balance of accessibility and complexity, the impact of Miku’s harmonies, and the beauty of the bridge before the final chorus (the very best part of the song). More music theory please. Even better if you can pick up your guitar to illustrate your points.
