111: Kit-bashing Rail Cars Into Themed Café

  • In this video I will take two old passenger cars and convert them to a themed café for my model railroad layout. This is part of a scene I call "Switch Junction" - a historic, museum town. The techniques I use are simple and straight forward. Anyone can do this with just a little patience and an eye for detail. Enjoy my friends!

Thank you, Steve, great ideas. If I do it I think I will put a front porch with roof for outside dining plus build a structure for the backside to prepare food and maybe a bar set up. Thanks again for your ideas.

Hi ya Steve. Great use of those old Southern Pacific passenger cars. It reminds me a lot of a series of chili burger and hot dog restaurants that used old passenger cars. One was on Sunset Blvd, in Hollywood, the other on Ventura Blvd. in the valley. I believe on the outside of those you need a old oak tree. With a couple of picnic tables underneath. That would be cool. It’s a good thing you put in a handicap ramp on the end. Since you cut off all your customers legs. You’re a monster! Lol. Keep having fun. See ya next time.

      Norman,
I remember the Hollywood Blvd. shop quite clearly and fatteningly.
There was also one on ,"I BELIEVE", Fairfax. Between the Union Station parking lot and Olveria St.
Here on the East coast we called them Trolley Diners. Most of the joints were originally built along Trolley tracks. Hence the name.
They were constructed of old Heavyweight NYC or D&H passenger cars. They MIGHT have a kitchen made of B&A, D&H, or REA luggage car parts.
Just prior to the pandemic these diners, and even themed full size restaurants, were have a resurgence.
About six years before my Eileen died she opened two full service restaurants. One in Bennington, VT with the other in West Springfield, MA. Smart repurposing of building stock and ambience.
      Jim
      On vaca in the mountains.

Neat project. It reminds me of a restaurant called "The Steam Shed" which was off the old CNW line at Irvington, NE (northwest of Omaha). They hauled a couple old diners to a site and built a bar and kitchen in between. I remember it from the 70s but it's long gone now. PS, Steve, many dining cars had linoleum flooring, not wood boards.

I really appreciate you taking the time to demonstrate how to do this I've been wondering about doing something like this as I had an idea with a very expensive Cor and I'm wanting to do this concept as well but I think I might use laser cut planks But my layout so far I'm having issues with because of its size and dimensions it's
    87" Long by 5' Wide

The best projects are the ones that take on a life of their own. Like this one. It starts with one simple idea like the diner. The diner needs lights and suddenly you have revamped a whole scene. Nicely done.
Do you have room for a small stable to offer pony rides for the kids?😁

So cool! I actually have these as a passenger train set that I run with my Kato FEF-3 and look really good. They may not be prototypical since they’re running with my FEF-3 (which happens to be Union Pacific 844) but I really enjoy them, and I really like what you did with these making them into a restaurant. Great video!

In Danville IL O'Leary's Restaurant had a Chicago and Eastern Illinois Railroad dining car. It was an attraction for many years until O'Leary's closed and purchased by Wheel's O' Time in early 2000 and moved to the Bunker Hill area of Kennebunk County Park, Vermillion County. While at the restaurant, the interior was gutted and transformed to a dining room. Today, the car has no original interior, so the museum is using it for storage. It fell into disrepair and the park did not have the budget to restore it so it was sold for scrap this year.

    Hey Steve,
Though I love what you did with the Trolley Cafe' you've got me confused.
When you joined the two passenger cars did you leave the adjoining walls intact, make small cutouts for connecting doorways and passthroughs, or just do what I would do and lump off the two "interior walls" just to get the dang job DONE?
