I have a question about growing squash, cucumbers, and melons? How the heck do I stop powdery mildew? It seems completely unavoidable in my yard. Everything starts beautiful then right around time for fruit production boom powdery mildew! I try to avoid watering it still happens. Neem oil helps but it's impossible to stay on top of even with that. Does the peroxide mix help?
What did you use for your walkways. There a lot of options out there and weights of weed barrier. What’s lasted best for you. I’m looking at a 8oz non woven but it’s like $315. Thoughts ???? Subscribed and love your videos they’re really on the mark.

There's another channel that I won't mention, but its sounds like "hectic gardening," that use to allow products to be mentioned and was all for helping the viewers especial for those who can't afford the expensive stuff and for beginners. My husband and I pick up old cattle tubs…farmers put water in them for their cattle. We cut them length wise put large holes in the bottom of one of them. They don’t look pretty, but it works for us!
@@pakbowl420 I think I can explain that. In the beginning, everyone that starts a TH-cam channel is on their own. Sometimes, they explode, and it becomes too much for a person to handle, so they hire people to help. When you're on your own, you can get by doing whatever, but once you have a team, now you have people you have to give a regular paycheck to, so you need a guaranteed income stream to pay them. Gardening is extremely seasonal. It's like owning an ice cream stand. You have 4 good months, and the rest of the year doesn't do much, so you're under incredible pressure to drive enough revenue to pay your workers. If you miss, you'll have to fire people. Once it becomes a business, the rules change. I don't have any employees. I do this all my own, so I have the flexibility to do whatever I want, but if I ever had to hire someone to help, it would force me to change. It's a consequence of being an employer.
I am in Phx AZ, on a fairly small lot with 20 fruits trees and which I keep below 8’, & I planted sweet potatoes in the tree wells the 1st yr but then the tree roots became too dense so now I grow the sweet pots in grow bags. The vines grow out and reduce the temp of the soil so the trees don’t get stressed, win win. Except that the vines hide any diamondback snakes that manage to get by all my snake-proof systems😱😬
I'd like to see a video on your tomatoes and peppers, as I too live in a very hot, humid climate. Our temps are upper 90's to 110° off the gulf of Mexico at least 9 months out of the year. I bought 3 of these raised beds and was planning on cross planting onions and garlic with the tomatoes.

Me too. Mine is made of 2x4's on top of cement blocks, grow bags, planters, or home made lined and vented wood boxes. I tried using scrap vinyl under the cement blocks, but weeds between rows is a problem. So, I will spend the money to put in good heavy duty landscaping cloth from growing solutions. That will eliminate weeds from around the raised garden. Next year I might afford a drip garden system once the design is finalized.
I have 4 raised beds 2x4x6ft from Amazon only around $120.00per bed I used branches and leaves to fill them then soil I had a cement patio I wasn't using so I put my beds on that worked out great. But I was losing soil underneath so I'm doing on ground with a weaved cloth to keep weeds from coming up. Saw the ones on livinging Tradtions u tube channel great idea using next time. The 6x3 model comes in 18 inch height. That's fairly tall. Any taller than 24 inches and you start having issues reaching the plants. I can't imagine growing an indeterminate tomato in a 36 inch tall raised bed. I'd need a ladder to harvest 😂
I have watched some of your videos. I am older, and it is obvious that you have a passion for growing food. Mother Nature grows plenty every year. I found you on a lettuce search. Inflation does not have to be a personal problem. Inflation is a government problem! Food, is not hard to grow, and what you grow yourself may actually taste better than what you are use to paying for. Keep doing what you do! Even the old folks are watching!
Be prepared for the tree roots to grow upwards into the raised beds. It happened to me. I even had roots from trees 35 feet away to grow up into large potted plants through the 1"drainage holes in the bottoms of the pots.
The higher beds have been a game changer for me. I am going on 77 and have a bad back and knees. The high raised beds allow me to garden for much longer periods of time.
I genuinely don't plan on being here forever. They're mowing down every tree in my county, unfortunately. It's maddening. I bought land in a more "remote" area for later in life.
Unfortunately in this day and age most buyers are looking for maintenance free yards. Case in point. Sister had been in her home for over 20 years. First owner. She was the flower and shrub gardener and her husband the vegetable gardener. When they went to move their real estate agent reccomended losing all of the raised beds in the backyard and replace with grass. Hubbie wasn't going for that because it was in June and he wasn't gonna tear it all up. House went on the market and sat until late September after they did what the agent suggested in the first place. Comps in the area were averaging less than 30 days on the market. According to the agent everyone loved the house and yard but were intimidated by the percieved maintenance and upkeep. Most prospective buyers were in their mid 30s to late 40s with young kids who wanted room for their kids to play not a farm as one person told their agent.
My husband made me two raised beds made of metal and wood. They aren’t too heavy and cheaper than buying things. As soon as I get all my dirt in them, I’ll transplant some of my seedlings. The rest go in the grow bags I bought when you told us about the sale!
This is exactly what we've been doing the past few years. These beds transport so easily and I can rearrange my garden quickly as well. They're one of my favorite things!
Our Texas Gulf Coast "soil" is clay/gumbo. In the dry summers it turns into concrete. I've tried amending the soil to no avail. Finally I bought 2 of the 4' x 4' 18' tall metal raised beds from Amazon. The fact that I could fill it with quality soil made it the ideal solution! I filled the bottom 8-10" with sticks, leaves, etc that would eventually break down to feed the soil even more. I had so much success with the 2 beds that I bought 2 more for this growing season. Filling them can be pricey, but it is an investment that will pay off with delicious tomatoes, peppers, squash, etc. Love that you pass on such great gardening advice!

Coastal SC here 😊. I admire everything you bring to the gardening table. Those raised bed frames look amazing. My concern is putting them ontop tree roots. The tree roots will come up under and suck all the nutrients like in your watermelon plant. I'm living that nightmare currently with my raised beds that are 20' from a tree.
You must use weed block under them. I had roots from Altheas 3+ feet away fill my 18" deep beds. First year was great, 2nd year nothing but the trees thrived.
I wondered about the tree roots. For a long time I have used wine barrel for container gardening. But in the😢 last few years the roots from my neighbors trees have invaded them. Now mostly unusable. This year I'm putting pots on top of dirt/weed barrier underneath so the wine barrel is now a platform.
I ordered some of these because I wanted to get a few more beds. I had 5 of the expensive metal beds. I got 3 more of these. They are such good quality. My other beds were about $200 each and these are the same quality. Thank you so much for finding these and sharing it with us
I find it hard to believe that this bed could be equal to a $200 raised bed, but if that's the case, call me flabbergasted. I think that's the first time in my life I've ever typed out that word 😂 I'm really glad you're satisfied with the quality. That makes me happy.
Not only is your strategically placed metal bed idea a good one for those practical purposes, but it's also aesthetically pleasing as well. Wish those had been available before I made my entire back yard into a garden. Wasn't thinking about 'resale' 🤔.
I really like the look, too! The painted beds are a couple bucks more than the galvanized option, but I think they look so good. I'm a sucker for avocados, and they called the color "avocado," so sign me up 😂
Hi Antonio , Now you done it! You got my brain to thinking again. I also have been looking at those bins but like you I have raised beds that have a long life in them and I am already 75. I am going to check these bins out. I have baby chickens Ducks guineas a lot and these taller bins would make great brooder pens for starter pens for baby chickens. Thanks Jessie from Arkansas
There are a lot of cool observations and great ideas in this video 👌 Just a word of caution, raised beds near trees tend to get full of tree roots eventually. Be sure to clean them out periodically 👍
I love that idea, I think you will end with fruit tree roots in those raised beds. I have a tree about 12 feet from my compost area and those roots get into the bottom couple of inches of the compost piles.

I just bought a book by another YT David the Good called Grocery Row Gardening. I was already planning for a little less chaos than he promotes (just my personality not a fault of his idea)…and if I take his ideas and now yours… and split it down the middle I think it is my dream garden!

I don't mean to discourage anyone from buying a premium raised bed. Some of the premium raised beds, if you calculate the cost per square foot (or cubic foot) since they're often larger, wider and deeper, you may be able to get yourself a good deal. Also, if you do want a larger, premium raised bed, I would urge you to buy one from a TH-cam gardening channel and support creators that provide you content you find valuable. My intent with this video was to provide an option for those that are looking to squeeze more out of their small yard, and these smaller, "mid-level" raised beds fit the bill for people like me. I don't think I could replace my large raised bed garden with these because they're not large enough for my purposes, but they're an awesome bridge to grow more food in spaces I was previously "wasting."

I use pressure treated wood and set 1 rectangle of 2x6s on top of another after treating the insides and bottoms of each with preservative. The top is drilled and toe-nailed into the bottom one. The bottom one has stainless screws partially drilled into the bottom with the heads sitting on pavers flush with the 4 corners (to make mowing easier). I also used plastic edging nailed to the inside to keep the material from coming out the 1-inch air gap at the bottom, after which we lined the entire inside with heavy duty aluminum foil but with 1" excess sticking above the top edge. Filling with compost or other material holds the foil in place. When done, I cut the 4 corners of excess foil, folded flush with the top and caulked all around. This is the *_best_* raised bed solution. Cost is about $50 and life expectancy is about 50 years. One thing caught my ear: the black plastic preventing pests/disease. We have a sick juvenile fig tree and have been looking for empirical data on this. After removing diseased (I'm guessing fungus) foliage and spraying with copper, we will put down the plastic. The roots of the trees may invade the beds… the previous owners of our house left a compost pile behind the shed, for years it looks like, and the tree on the other side of the fence grew its roots right up into it. We can’t dig it out anymore, we will have to literally cut it out. I think some kind of barrier on the bottom of the bed would be a good idea long term.
Got 6 of the tall ones at the beginning of the year, looking forward to getting some good use out of them. I would have to agree with your assessment 100% of how versatile they are.
Great idea, maximizing on space is always a plus. As a been there done that situation i strongly recommend lining the beds with fabric. The roots from the nearby trees WILL work their way into the beds depriving what your trying to grow in them of nutrients.
I made raised bed last spring basically free. I had three pieces of scrapped sectional garage door, about 250cm * 50cm per piece. Cut one of them to two pieces. Bought some corner brackets for few euros and and join the pieces with them so that long edges are 250cm and two half pieces makes width of 125cm. Took less than hour to make, looking nice as parts are painted white with no big dents or scratches. It's made of aluminum, so it will last longer than me.
I'm doing something similar (but with mature oak trees, and cheap 2x6 SPF raised beds). In regards to brassicas, the heavy shaded plants bolted a couple weeks later than the ones with a lot of sun, but were much smaller (I can start growing cool season crops in January where I'm at [and some all through winter], and they start bolting around this time). I've seen people say that tree roots eventually grew into their raised beds, so it may be wise to put landscaping fabric under them (though, I didn't, lol). Pole beans, Fava beans, Snow Peas, Arugula, and Cilantro seemed to have tolerated the heavy shade the best, from what I've tried so far.
We purchased a dozen of beds very similar to these also at a great price! They have done wonders to expand our growing area. The brassicas are already in the beds. I really like your idea of planting the annuals in beds under the trees. Some of our peach and pear trees are already producing fruit thanks to an early spring. Thanks for sharing! I always learn something when I watch your videos! So exciting, all of the extra space!!!
I try. It's tough growing where I live. Too cold in the winter, too hot in the summer, too much disease, too many bugs. But, there are solutions if you're willing to find them.
bought these metal raised beds this year ... very similar except mine have a support bar across the middle. From reviews I've read of others that do not have the support bar, they do have issues with the sides bulging out from the weight of the soil. Love mine so far. Thanks for your informative videos
Yes!! It is a brilliant idea! I bought one of those beds when you first mentioned them, their every bit as good as my birdies and vegos......and such a great idea to scoot them in between the trees!!! I love it. I have to think about just how, now, but im on it!!! I might need a few more, since they are cheap anyway. I just bought 2 of these style in 6'x3' back in Feb of this year. Got one of them planted already and about to start the next one this week. Mine had two inside rods that connect both sides to keep them from bowing out over time
Sharing my experience with using a raised bed next to a tree: the tree roots will punch through any barrier you place at the bottom of the raised bed to seek out the soil and water contained inside. I hope you have better luck, but my result was a raised bed saturated with tree roots by the end of the season.
I will line the bottoms. You can buy barrier that the roots cannot penetrate. There are a lot of root block barriers out there, and you could also put down plywood, which the roots won't grow through.
It's taken me 6 years to build my yard. I've done it all 100% by myself, one weekend at a time. If I can do it, anyone can. Build yours out one Saturday at a time. Each Saturday, work in a little 5ft x 10ft section. After a couple years, you won't even recognize the place.
Finally, I'm caught up and can take a break with rain in the forecast for the next three days. It is perfect timing, as I spent the last three days transplanting seedlings, and sowing the last seeds for my spring/summer garden. In a couple weeks, I'll have to sow a few seeds for determinate tomato replacement crop, but only for 6 plants. The rest are semi-determinate and will last the season, or until something kills them. I have onions growing as companion plants. I am hoping their aroma helps deter horn worms. Last year's horn worm infestation was bad.
@@TheMillennialGardener you might want to add that to the video. Was my concern and I see several have beat me to it. One of the arguments for keeping compost off the ground (on a pallet for example) is because roots from nearby trees will marvel at the nutrients, even if the compost only ages for a year. Guessing after 2-3 years that raised bed is full of tree roots.
@@vesc1389my experience tells me that will happen unless you have barrier at the bottom of the raised bed that is so strong that the tree roots are unable to penetrate (they are super capable by the way).
I ended up buying two new beds for my garden using your amazon address provided. I have several from Vegega and Vego which were expensive. I hope they compare well, but a much better price for these!
I love these beds. I bought six 12'X3'X17in. They are massive and beautiful and will handle all the plants I could ever want to grow. The only issue with the largest beds is assembling them. Each one took about two hours.

i am going into my 3 year of using 6 of the Vego steel raised beds. I picked them all up on huge black friday discounts off Amazon. I am in Maryland, and they work fantastic and honestly, still look new. I have the 17inch tall ones, and honestly, with the price of lumber and treating the lumber with tung oil to prevent rot, these are cheaper.

Nice video! I have about all the raised beds I can fit right now. Planted a bunch of potatoes in food grade fifty five gallon barrels. Three different types russet,red Pontiac and Adirondack blues. About all I dare plant outside right now where I live. Plants in the greenhouse are doing great. In about a week I’ll plant lettuce and maybe onions in the raised beds.
Oh boy I am getting these, I always wanted them and the price is reasonable. Currently I have raised beds I made from free pallet wood and love them, third year outside all year and they're in great shape. But the look and ease of these and the setup, that's hard to beat. I heat with wood pellets and save the bags so I'd probably line the inside with plastic and surely that would help over time from any rusting. I love that a box comes in the mail and I have an instant bed to place on the lawn and fill. I like the look too, they're attractive.
I've been resisting these types of beds since they hit the market, but the price point has gotten too tempting. I'm really pleased, and I can't wait to begin using them to grow things. It's going to be a fun year.
I can't wait to see what you do with your secret garden space. I'm in central WI, so very different from your zone, but I've learned a ton from watching your channel. I live on roughly two acres and I have about 200 mature maples, pines and other trees on my property. Even in a wet year I only have to mow the yard twice a month. We've been here a little over 20yrs. I have a strip about 70 x 25' that gets a good 8-10hrs of sun daily that I've been using for my garden for a few years. It's on the north side of my land and the pine row to the south of it just keeps getting taller and it's going to be done soon. I'm going to have to take out 30 pines to keep it there or take out a couple 50+ year old maples, basswood, and pine to move my garden to the south side of our property. I think I'm going to take the older ones out from the south side, and leave my plots on the north side for shade. I might have to keep the existing plots for cool tolerant plants. We have to play the hand we're dealt with, and I'm at least 20yrs older than you so this is my forever home.

Speaking from experience, those tree roots are going to grow up from under the raised beds and take them over. I have trees about 10 yards from 4 of my raised beds and they get filled up with roots constantly. I have to cut and dig out roots twice a year now. It's a lot of work
These raised beds were a game changer for me. At my age, I cant get down and plant in the ground. With these great beds, not only can I plant 18" higher, but I can drive my golf cart between the beds and work the beds while sitting in the cart. I havent had so much fun in years!! One caveat for you: I had a friend who did similar to what you describe, putting a couple of these raised beds between a couple of young fruit trees. The trees absolutely loved all the water and fertilizer that was put in the beds, and the roots creeped right under the beds and made a real mess. Just a thought. Edited to add: those prices are amazing! I just might have to find some more space to put a couple of them. Wow.
Oh my gosh thank you, I’m having to dismantle some raised beds my husband and I built many years ago as they are falling apart. These are just what I need . I’ve been looking , but like you said they are really spendy.

I have two community garden plots this season and am wondering what to do with all the veggies 🤣
I went in another direction. I currently have corrugated steel beds, and while they are strong, there are some limitations (frustrations with the irregular shape, cost, many metal products deform due to soil pressure, and it's uncertain whether they out-perform well-made wooden beds in the longterm). I've chosen to use rough cut 2x10 tamarack (larch), which is highly resistant to decay. More so than any standard pressure treated wood product. I expect 20 years out of these, at a minimum. They are very strong, won't deform, and because I've sourced the wood directly from a logger in my region, they cost only $65 for a 4x8 foot bed that's 20 inches high.
I started gardening here in north Texas about three years ago. The first year we tried to plant in ground by amending our horrible clay soil. It was a huge fail and very little grew. The next year we decided on trying to garden in metal above ground beds and added the best soil we could find from a local garden center. We had much better success. Last year we added more beds and had an even greater harvest. This is the way to go if you have bad soil!
Before you place your new raised beds, I suggest you lay weed mat underneath, as I’ve found that tree roots will grow up into them. By laying the weed mat it stops/reduces this problem 😊

I'd like to see a video on your tomatoes and peppers, as I too live in a very hot, humid climate. Our temps are upper 90's to 110° off the gulf of Mexico at least 9 months out of the year. I bought 3 of these raised beds and was planning on cross planting onions and garlic with the tomatoes.

I’m old and I switched to taller, cart style raise bed. So much nicer for my back and knees.
Me too. Mine is made of 2x4's on top of cement blocks, grow bags, planters, or home made lined and vented wood boxes. I tried using scrap vinyl under the cement blocks, but weeds between rows is a problem. So, I will spend the money to put in good heavy duty landscaping cloth from growing solutions. That will eliminate weeds from around the raised garden. Next year I might afford a drip garden system once the design is finalized.
I have 4 raised beds 2x4x6ft from Amazon only around $120.00per bed I used branches and leaves to fill them then soil I had a cement patio I wasn't using so I put my beds on that worked out great. But I was losing soil underneath so I'm doing on ground with a weaved cloth to keep weeds from coming up. Saw the ones on livinging Tradtions u tube channel great idea using next time. Happy Gardening everyone

The 6x3 model comes in 18 inch height. That's fairly tall. Any taller than 24 inches and you start having issues reaching the plants. I can't imagine growing an indeterminate tomato in a 36 inch tall raised bed. I'd need a ladder to harvest 😂

I have watched some of your videos. I am older, and it is obvious that you have a passion for growing food. Mother Nature grows plenty every year. I found you on a lettuce search.
Inflation does not have to be a personal problem. Inflation is a government problem!
Food, is not hard to grow, and what you grow yourself may actually taste better than what you are use to paying for.

Be prepared for the tree roots to grow upwards into the raised beds. It happened to me. I even had roots from trees 35 feet away to grow up into large potted plants through the 1"drainage holes in the bottoms of the pots.
The higher beds have been a game changer for me. I am going on 77 and have a bad back and knees. The high raised beds allow me to garden for much longer periods of time.
Outstanding! My 8 inch beds do require a lot of bending.
The honesty about resale value is fantastic. Often overlooked on the interwebs.😅
I genuinely don't plan on being here forever. They're mowing down every tree in my county, unfortunately. It's maddening. I bought land in a more "remote" area for later in life.

Unfortunately in this day and age most buyers are looking for maintenance free yards. Case in point. Sister had been in her home for over 20 years. First owner. She was the flower and shrub gardener and her husband the vegetable gardener. When they went to move their real estate agent reccomended losing all of the raised beds in the backyard and replace with grass. Hubbie wasn't going for that because it was in June and he wasn't gonna tear it all up. House went on the market and sat until late September after they did what the agent suggested in the first place. Comps in the area were averaging less than 30 days on the market. According to the agent everyone loved the house and yard but were intimidated by the percieved maintenance and upkeep. Most prospective buyers were in their mid 30s to late 40s with young kids who wanted room for their kids to play not a farm as one person told their agent.

My husband made me two raised beds made of metal and wood. They aren’t too heavy and cheaper than buying things. As soon as I get all my dirt in them, I’ll transplant some of my seedlings. The rest go in the grow bags I bought when you told us about the sale!
This is exactly what we've been doing the past few years. These beds transport so easily and I can rearrange my garden quickly as well. They're one of my favorite things!

Our Texas Gulf Coast "soil" is clay/gumbo. In the dry summers it turns into concrete. I've tried amending the soil to no avail. Finally I bought 2 of the 4' x 4' 18' tall metal raised beds from Amazon. The fact that I could fill it with quality soil made it the ideal solution! I filled the bottom 8-10" with sticks, leaves, etc that would eventually break down to feed the soil even more. I had so much success with the 2 beds that I bought 2 more for this growing season. Filling them can be pricey, but it is an investment that will pay off with delicious tomatoes, peppers, squash, etc. Love that you pass on such great gardening advice!

I have been changing out my wood raised beds to the metal raised beds (rectangular not oval) I love them, so easy to assemble and move around.

Coastal SC here 😊. I admire everything you bring to the gardening table. Those raised bed frames look amazing. My concern is putting them ontop tree roots. The tree roots will come up under and suck all the nutrients like in your watermelon plant.
I'm living that nightmare currently with my raised beds that are 20' from a tree.
You can line the bottoms. I have plenty of weed barrier lying around. If you're really concerned, you can put a piece of plywood under them.

You must use weed block under them. I had roots from Altheas 3+ feet away fill my 18" deep beds. First year was great, 2nd year nothing but the trees thrived.
I wondered about the tree roots. For a long time I have used wine barrel for container gardening. But in the😢 last few years the roots from my neighbors trees have invaded them. Now mostly unusable. This year I'm putting pots on top of dirt/weed barrier underneath so the wine barrel is now a platform.
i just purchased 3 of the 8x2x1.5 to start my raised bed garden. VERY sturdy and well made for the price.

Not only is your strategically placed metal bed idea a good one for those practical purposes, but it's also aesthetically pleasing as well. Wish those had been available before I made my entire back yard into a garden. Wasn't thinking about 'resale' 🤔.
I really like the look, too! The painted beds are a couple bucks more than the galvanized option, but I think they look so good. I'm a sucker for avocados, and they called the color "avocado," so sign me up 😂

I love that idea, I think you will end with fruit tree roots in those raised beds. I have a tree about 12 feet from my compost area and those roots get into the bottom couple of inches of the compost piles.

I don't mean to discourage anyone from buying a premium raised bed. Some of the premium raised beds, if you calculate the cost per square foot (or cubic foot) since they're often larger, wider and deeper, you may be able to get yourself a good deal. Also, if you do want a larger, premium raised bed, I would urge you to buy one from a TH-cam gardening channel and support creators that provide you content you find valuable. My intent with this video was to provide an option for those that are looking to squeeze more out of their small yard, and these smaller, "mid-level" raised beds fit the bill for people like me. I don't think I could replace my large raised bed garden with these because they're not large enough for my purposes, but they're an awesome bridge to grow more food in spaces I was previously "wasting."

I use pressure treated wood and set 1 rectangle of 2x6s on top of another after treating the insides and bottoms of each with preservative. The top is drilled and toe-nailed into the bottom one. The bottom one has stainless screws partially drilled into the bottom with the heads sitting on pavers flush with the 4 corners (to make mowing easier). I also used plastic edging nailed to the inside to keep the material from coming out the 1-inch air gap at the bottom, after which we lined the entire inside with heavy duty aluminum foil but with 1" excess sticking above the top edge. Filling with compost or other material holds the foil in place. When done, I cut the 4 corners of excess foil, folded flush with the top and caulked all around. This is the *_best_* raised bed solution. Cost is about $50 and life expectancy is about 50 years. One thing caught my ear: the black plastic preventing pests/disease. We have a sick juvenile fig tree and have been looking for empirical data on this. After removing diseased (I'm guessing fungus) foliage and spraying with copper, we will put down the plastic.

The roots of the trees may invade the beds… the previous owners of our house left a compost pile behind the shed, for years it looks like, and the tree on the other side of the fence grew its roots right up into it. We can’t dig it out anymore, we will have to literally cut it out. I think some kind of barrier on the bottom of the bed would be a good idea long term.
Got 6 of the tall ones at the beginning of the year, looking forward to getting some good use out of them. I would have to agree with your assessment 100% of how versatile they are.
Great idea, maximizing on space is always a plus. As a been there done that situation i strongly recommend lining the beds with fabric. The roots from the nearby trees WILL work their way into the beds depriving what your trying to grow in them of nutrients.

I made raised bed last spring basically free. I had three pieces of scrapped sectional garage door, about 250cm * 50cm per piece. Cut one of them to two pieces. Bought some corner brackets for few euros and and join the pieces with them so that long edges are 250cm and two half pieces makes width of 125cm.
Took less than hour to make, looking nice as parts are painted white with no big dents or scratches. It's made of aluminum, so it will last longer than me.

I'm doing something similar (but with mature oak trees, and cheap 2x6 SPF raised beds). In regards to brassicas, the heavy shaded plants bolted a couple weeks later than the ones with a lot of sun, but were much smaller (I can start growing cool season crops in January where I'm at [and some all through winter], and they start bolting around this time). I've seen people say that tree roots eventually grew into their raised beds, so it may be wise to put landscaping fabric under them (though, I didn't, lol). Pole beans, Fava beans, Snow Peas, Arugula, and Cilantro seemed to have tolerated the heavy shade the best, from what I've tried so far.
We purchased a dozen of beds very similar to these also at a great price! They have done wonders to expand our growing area. The brassicas are already in the beds. I really like your idea of planting the annuals in beds under the trees. Some of our peach and pear trees are already producing fruit thanks to an early spring. Thanks for sharing! I always learn something when I watch your videos! So exciting, all of the extra space!!!

I try. It's tough growing where I live. Too cold in the winter, too hot in the summer, too much disease, too many bugs. But, there are solutions if you're willing to find them.

bought these metal raised beds this year ... very similar except mine have a support bar across the middle. From reviews I've read of others that do not have the support bar, they do have issues with the sides bulging out from the weight of the soil. Love mine so far. Thanks for your informative videos
These are smaller beds, so they don't hold as much soil. The larger beds tend to have them, because they hold back hundreds of pounds of soil.

I just bought 2 of these style in 6'x3' back in Feb of this year. Got one of them planted already and about to start the next one this week. Mine had two inside rods that connect both sides to keep them from bowing out over time

Sharing my experience with using a raised bed next to a tree: the tree roots will punch through any barrier you place at the bottom of the raised bed to seek out the soil and water contained inside. I hope you have better luck, but my result was a raised bed saturated with tree roots by the end of the season.
I will line the bottoms. You can buy barrier that the roots cannot penetrate. There are a lot of root block barriers out there, and you could also put down plywood, which the roots won't grow through.

It's taken me 6 years to build my yard. I've done it all 100% by myself, one weekend at a time. If I can do it, anyone can. Build yours out one Saturday at a time. Each Saturday, work in a little 5ft x 10ft section. After a couple years, you won't even recognize the place.
Finally, I'm caught up and can take a break with rain in the forecast for the next three days. It is perfect timing, as I spent the last three days transplanting seedlings, and sowing the last seeds for my spring/summer garden. In a couple weeks, I'll have to sow a few seeds for determinate tomato replacement crop, but only for 6 plants. The rest are semi-determinate and will last the season, or until something kills them. I have onions growing as companion plants. I am hoping their aroma helps deter horn worms. Last year's horn worm infestation was bad.

You will find that over time those trees will send up roots into your raised beds, because that is exactly what happened to mine.
Mine too. I am trying again, with heavy weed fabric underneath. Hope that keeps the tree roots out.

@@TheMillennialGardener you might want to add that to the video. Was my concern and I see several have beat me to it. One of the arguments for keeping compost off the ground (on a pallet for example) is because roots from nearby trees will marvel at the nutrients, even if the compost only ages for a year. Guessing after 2-3 years that raised bed is full of tree roots.
@@vesc1389my experience tells me that will happen unless you have barrier at the bottom of the raised bed that is so strong that the tree roots are unable to penetrate (they are super capable by the way).
I ended up buying two new beds for my garden using your amazon address provided. I have several from Vegega and Vego which were expensive. I hope they compare well, but a much better price for these!

I love these beds. I bought six 12'X3'X17in. They are massive and beautiful and will handle all the plants I could ever want to grow. The only issue with the largest beds is assembling them. Each one took about two hours.

i am going into my 3 year of using 6 of the Vego steel raised beds. I picked them all up on huge black friday discounts off Amazon. I am in Maryland, and they work fantastic and honestly, still look new. I have the 17inch tall ones, and honestly, with the price of lumber and treating the lumber with tung oil to prevent rot, these are cheaper.

Nice video! I have about all the raised beds I can fit right now. Planted a bunch of potatoes in food grade fifty five gallon barrels. Three different types russet,red Pontiac and Adirondack blues. About all I dare plant outside right now where I live. Plants in the greenhouse are doing great. In about a week I’ll plant lettuce and maybe onions in the raised beds.
The metal raised bed are great.
So far, I really like them.
Oh boy I am getting these, I always wanted them and the price is reasonable. Currently I have raised beds I made from free pallet wood and love them, third year outside all year and they're in great shape. But the look and ease of these and the setup, that's hard to beat. I heat with wood pellets and save the bags so I'd probably line the inside with plastic and surely that would help over time from any rusting. I love that a box comes in the mail and I have an instant bed to place on the lawn and fill. I like the look too, they're attractive.
I've been resisting these types of beds since they hit the market, but the price point has gotten too tempting. I'm really pleased, and I can't wait to begin using them to grow things. It's going to be a fun year.

I can't wait to see what you do with your secret garden space. I'm in central WI, so very different from your zone, but I've learned a ton from watching your channel. I live on roughly two acres and I have about 200 mature maples, pines and other trees on my property. Even in a wet year I only have to mow the yard twice a month. We've been here a little over 20yrs. I have a strip about 70 x 25' that gets a good 8-10hrs of sun daily that I've been using for my garden for a few years. It's on the north side of my land and the pine row to the south of it just keeps getting taller and it's going to be done soon. I'm going to have to take out 30 pines to keep it there or take out a couple 50+ year old maples, basswood, and pine to move my garden to the south side of our property. I think I'm going to take the older ones out from the south side, and leave my plots on the north side for shade. I might have to keep the existing plots for cool tolerant plants. We have to play the hand we're dealt with, and I'm at least 20yrs older than you so this is my forever home.

Speaking from experience, those tree roots are going to grow up from under the raised beds and take them over. I have trees about 10 yards from 4 of my raised beds and they get filled up with roots constantly. I have to cut and dig out roots twice a year now. It's a lot of work

These raised beds were a game changer for me. At my age, I cant get down and plant in the ground. With these great beds, not only can I plant 18" higher, but I can drive my golf cart between the beds and work the beds while sitting in the cart. I havent had so much fun in years!! One caveat for you: I had a friend who did similar to what you describe, putting a couple of these raised beds between a couple of young fruit trees. The trees absolutely loved all the water and fertilizer that was put in the beds, and the roots creeped right under the beds and made a real mess. Just a thought. Edited to add: those prices are amazing! I just might have to find some more space to put a couple of them. Wow.

I bought these same ones after that last video. Mine are set up directly in front of my fruit trees.
I went in another direction. I currently have corrugated steel beds, and while they are strong, there are some limitations (frustrations with the irregular shape, cost, many metal products deform due to soil pressure, and it's uncertain whether they out-perform well-made wooden beds in the longterm). I've chosen to use rough cut 2x10 tamarack (larch), which is highly resistant to decay. More so than any standard pressure treated wood product. I expect 20 years out of these, at a minimum. They are very strong, won't deform, and because I've sourced the wood directly from a logger in my region, they cost only $65 for a 4x8 foot bed that's 20 inches high.
I started gardening here in north Texas about three years ago. The first year we tried to plant in ground by amending our horrible clay soil. It was a huge fail and very little grew. The next year we decided on trying to garden in metal above ground beds and added the best soil we could find from a local garden center. We had much better success. Last year we added more beds and had an even greater harvest. This is the way to go if you have bad soil!
Before you place your new raised beds, I suggest you lay weed mat underneath, as I’ve found that tree roots will grow up into them. By laying the weed mat it stops/reduces this problem 😊
